point taken, however there's also this

BP has operations in over 80 countries, produces around 3.8 million barrels of oil equivalent per day and has 22,400 service stations worldwide. Its largest division is BP America, which is the biggest producer of oil and gas in the United States and is headquartered in Houston, Texas. It was just funny for us to see the US blame it on being "British" when we'd not thought of it that way for so long. Like British Telecom is supposedly a company from here but it might as well be Bangalore Telecom these days.

Oh, so what you're saying is that Americans did work for BP and had a say in its operations here in the States? Well gee, there goes the "It's the Brit's fault." :stongue:

Update March 20, 2011: A Coast Guard officer with a command center in Morgan City, LA, said today the Coast Guard has confirmed that oil is not coming from the Deepwater Horizon well but that they have found what appear to be smaller oil slicks in the Gulf. Their investigation into reports of large oil slicks is continuing. Additional photos and information from pilots John Wathen and Bonnie Schumaker who flew over the area yesterday are expected to be released today.

So tell me Kev, what would the GOP do? Are they going to hire Ann Coulter and tell us that petroleum flavored seafood is actually good for you? Are we just going to plug this leak and then continue raping the gulf for its oil? You Republicans must realize that oil is not an infinite resource, eventually it's going to run out. And with the current rate of oil consumption increasing exponentially from other countries, it's safe to assume it will run out sooner than later, but not until it becomes so scarce that we will be paying 10 dollars a gallon for it. So what's the right's solution to this? Oh yeah, cut spending on more important social services that are needed by the poor and middle class! That should show those dirty ing hippies a thing or two. :haha:

Despite the long-term bans on new leasing in state (since 1969) and federal waters (since 1984), drilling and production have continued on existing leases, from existing drilling and production platforms. Nine active offshore drilling and production locations remain in state waters: one platform and one artificial island in the Santa Barbara Channel, and four artificial islands and three platforms from the offshore portion of the Wilmington Oil Field in San Pedro Bay/Long Beach Harbor. The first artificial offshore island, for Belmont Offshore Field, was removed in 1999.[23] Twenty-three offshore drilling and production platforms remain in federal waters, producing 24,000,000 barrels (3,800,000 m3) of oil

California, like other states, owns and controls the mineral resources within 3 nautical miles (6 km) of the coast. Leasing California state seabed is controlled by the California State Lands Commission, which halted further leasing of state offshore tracts after the Santa Barbara oil spill in 1969.[12] In 1994 the California legislature codified the ban on new leases by passing the California Coastal Sanctuary Act, which prohibited new leasing of state offshore tracts.

The federal government continued to hold offshore lease sales through 1984. Then the US Congress directed that no federal funds be used to lease additional federal tracts off the coast of California. Congress repeated the moratorium on new leases every year until September 2008, when an appropriations bill passed the House and Senate without the ban; however, no federal lease sales have been proposed for offshore California since the ban was lifted.

A lawsuit by the state of California prevented the federal government from allowing development on 36 federal leases issued before the congressional moratorium. The federal government voided 29 of the contested leases by repaying $1.1 million in lease bonuses; the seven additional federal leases have not been resolved, but remain inactive because of the litigation. The Minerals Management Service estimates that the seven undeveloped leases contain 1,000,000,000 barrels (0.16 km3) of recoverable oil and 500,000,000,000 cubic feet (14 km3) of recoverable gas.[13]

In 1990, President George H. W. Bush issued an executive moratorium banning new federal leasing through the year 2000 in many offshore areas, including California. In 1998, President Bill Clinton extended the moratorium through 2012. In July 2008, President George W. Bush rescinded the executive order.

Gee, that's surprising.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday withdrew his support for a plan he championed to allow new offshore oil drilling off Santa Barbara County, citing the disastrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Schwarzenegger, whose administration as recently as Friday defended the proposed Tranquillon Ridge offshore drilling project, said images of the spill in the gulf changed his mind.

"All of you have seen, when you turn on the television, the devastation in the gulf, and I'm sure that they also were assured that it was safe to drill," he said at a news conference Monday. "I see on TV the birds drenched in oil, the fishermen out of work, the massive oil spill and oil slick destroying our precious ecosystem. That will not happen here in California, and this is why I am withdrawing my support for the T-Ridge project."

The offshore rigs you are referring too have been around since the 50' and 60's, at a time where many believed offshore oil drilling was a good thing. I'm sure that once the South reduces the gulf into a cesspool of filthy black mush, CA will close down the rest of these as well.

You're right. We don't spend enough on entitlements- social welfare now makes up "only" 35% of all U.S. wages; all those "poor" people with 40 inch flat screens, cars, and $100 Nike shoes living in government subsidized housing need just a liiiiittle more. Spending $1.6 trillion over budget this year is the path to sustainability.

And we'll dump oil and run a $15 trillion economy on magic solar beans and windmills.

the guy has clearly grown up living in a cocoon of academia or some other isolated situation, and knows nothing about how the real world actually operates. I want to keep arguing with him, but what's the point? Facts don't mean a thing to people who argue with emotions. One can only hope some wisdom will have accrued by the time he enters his 40s.

Pfft, I think you're the one who needs to gain a little more wisdom in the world if you think every single poor and destitute person living in the US fell victim to it by their own doing. BTW, those 40 inch tv screens you talk about can easily be bought at Wal-Mart for 500 bucks. I would hardly call that an item of luxury in these times.

Oh yeah, I can post up memes as well. Here's one of my favorites of your own GOP spokesmouth that you constantly kiss ass too.

But oh well, I'm retarded because I called out a bunch of Southerners for repeating their own mistakes. Should only be another year before another leak appears in the gulf.

Ugh, every time you post in this thread, you're making yourself look more and more stupid.

Do you honestly not see how massively poor your reasoning is on this?
