According to the Times Picayune, the Coast Guard has confirmed they are investigating a potentially large 100 mile slick about 30 miles offshore. They are going to a site near the Matterhorn well site about 20 miles north of the BP Deepwater Horizon site, according to the paper. The Matterhorn field includes includes a deepwater drilling platform owned by W&T Technology. It was acquired last year from TotalFinaElf E&P.
Independent pilots are attempting to reach the slick today. Bonnie Schumaker with Wings of Care reported she saw a slick two days ago and is attempting to reach the site.
Also, another Louisiana fisherman reports that fresh oil is coming ashore near South Pass, LA, and that cleanup crews are laying new boom near the beach. He also reports that cleanup crews in four-wheeled vehicles were patrolling the beaches near the marsh filled coast spraying a substance on the beach.
Cleanup crews are still operating along the marshes and beach areas of Louisiana and other gulf states. The Bay Jimmy of Louisiana's Barataria Bay remains heavily oiled.
Oil is also being discovered in more populated areas too. With spring break coming, students and tourists are already heading to the Gulf to escape the winter up north. Recently a group of Missouri college kids came across oil off the beaches of Pensicola. "We were fishing with nets for shells, we call it shelling, and it was just brown, I thought it was shark poop at first," one incredulous student told local Pensacola station WEAR-TV.
"It kind of did surprise me with all the efforts I thought BP was making to clean up but obviously as you can see, there's still so much to do," said another.

More spring breakers will likely come in contact with oil as they migrate in greater numbers to the Gulf. Residents across the coast complain they continue to see oily sheen and a white dispersant like mix washing in, leaving unusual blobs of brown foam that sometimes shine like tiny rainbows on the shore. |

You know, I actually felt bad for you Southerners when this happened not even a year ago. But the fact that it's happened again so soon after the first devastating spill really makes me think you lot are a bunch of careless buffoons. You deserve whatever happens to you this time. |

Pfft, sorry if I don't feel more sympathetic to a bunch of hillbillies who care more about their own jobs than they do their environment. Nor am I going to feel sorry for a lot who repeat their own mistakes. Get off this ing oil already, it's doing more damage than you can possibly imagine. |

The oil spill was created by a bunch if hicks, in the southern states, surrounding the Gulf of Mexico, right?
OR...
It was created by a MASSIVE multi-national corporation that acquired the right to drill for oil there, and sadly ed up big-time, and had no proper disaster plan.

And who invited them in? A foreign business doesn't just waltz in to another sovereign nation, especially not the US and start drilling their resources away. Someone had to approve of it. And the Southerners embraced it with open arms, and took the jobs that were created from offshore rigs. They were the ones doing the grunt work in the first place, contributing to what is now one of the greatest ecological disasters in my country's history.
And did they learn anything from it? Did they take the time to stop and say "Gee whiz Jim Bob, you think we done goofed in this heare oil drillin's?" Nope. They couldn't wait to get that moratorium lifted and start drilling once again. So you tell me, why shouldn't they take part of the blame?
Have fun picking up more tar balls on your beaches and enjoying more sights such as this. I'm sure your tourist clientele will appreciate it.

It's an international drilling contract, that the US makes serious bank from. You're kidding yourself if you think it wasn't a federal decision, rather than a state decision.
Laugh at the dying Pelicans, it's YOUR country, sunshine. It's YOUR eco-system that one of the big (UK) oil companies just ed a large part of. Enjoy it while you can :)
But yes, it's the people in the south that are to blame. All the fishing businesses that lost their livelihood. All the tourist areas that no one wants to visit any more, because oil-slicks don't look as good in the background of their "we just got married" pics. Much easier that way.

Hey, if those Southerners want to continue in the mantra of "Drill Baby Drill" then they can deal with the consequences as well. Federal level or not, they still have the power to do something to change it. Don't shoot the messenger, I didn't cause those slicks. But if they want to keep repeating their mistakes, then I will continue to point and laugh.
Also, no pelicans here in Cali that are covered in oil. Everything still looks nice and clean here. It's safe to say I'm still enjoying my portion of the country. |
