That is not a very good argument since all of those things are tangible. Race and sex are tangible traits of a person, they are clearly visible, so is leprosy. Religion has no tangible qualities to it, its purely metaphysical. Thats why arguments about religion or between religions are so ing stupid. They are totally 100% in the mind of the people arguing. There is no tangible, physical traits to accept or recognize or understand like there is with sex, race or disease.

So religion is not a symptom, it is a problem, because those other things are totally unrelated. In fact religion is more of an issue because it can adopt separate things like racism and sexism, and often does, and uses the religious teachings and ideology to back those things up and justify them to the masses that subscribe to religion.

Religion is a problem in itself and an instigator and agitator of other problems, hence why it is such a bad practice.

While I understand the outrage, and am similarly offended, I would suggest to you that the position of this "pastor" is in no way consistant with mainstream Christianity.

I think that almost all religions are, in their root, good. When people begin to justify their life choices using religion, or look particularly close at one small part of a religion instead of grasping the larger concepts it seems as though religion is idiotic, shortsighted, and evil mysticism. When, the real overall message of most religions seems to be love, forgiveness and an open mind. This is entirely contrary to how most people who practice a religion seem to act and that is sad because religion has a lot of great insights to offer.

People will always be able to poke holes in a religious belief that seems exclusive and I know that I will be looked down upon for "playing devils advocate" (hehehe) on this topic. But, the one positive thing about religion is that it is in essence about love, forgiveness, understanding and the shortcoming is that it must be viewed by an individual with a perspective and agenda. Usually even taught to the masses by individuals with very strong and non-altruistic agendas.

btw, the guy that claimed the Japanese deserved it is a tard, you can't do anything but feel sorry for people that have that much hatred in their lives. The reason I use religion is as a tool to find compassion which is how I remain more or less consistently happy about life. I would never use it to explain science, but that's just because I see it as a tool to understanding human interaction and not as a way to look down on others.

COR version- mock gmilf, he claimed to think religion is not all bad.

Religious and Idiots is a bit redundant, IMO. Pick one.

"Don't let your religion get in your way with God" is a thought that I think is more appropriate. Spirituality and religiousness aren't the same. It's when idiots proclaim to speak or act in a name of certain deity, is when starts to get sticky...

Case in point:

quote:
(Reuters) - Afghans protesting against the burning of a Koran by an obscure U.S. pastor over-ran a United Nations compound on Friday and killed at least seven international staff in the deadliest ever attack on the UN in Afghanistan.

Thousands of demonstrators flooded into the streets after Friday prayers and headed for the UN mission in usually peaceful Mazar-i-Sharif, a city slated as safe enough to be in the vanguard of a crucial security transition.

The governor of Balkh province said insurgents had used the march as cover to attack the compound, in a battle that raged for several hours and raises serious questions about plans to make the city a pilot for security transfer to national forces.

The UN Security Council called an emergency meeting for later on Friday to discuss the attack.

The attackers overwhelmed security guards, burned parts of the compound and climbed up blast walls to topple a guard tower. Five protesters were also killed and around 20 wounded, some after trying to take weapons off the UN security guards.

"The insurgents have taken advantage of the situation to attack the UN compound," said Governor Ata Mohammad Noor.

He told a news conference that many in the crowd of protesters had been carrying guns. Some 27 people have already been detained over the attack, he added.

DEADLIEST ATTACK

The attack is the deadliest ever on the United Nations in Afghanistan, and one of the worst on the organization for years.

"It is the worst incident ever for UN staff in Afghanistan. Mazar mobs were active in the 1990s, repeatedly ransacking UN offices...but so far as I remember they never actually killed anyone," a former UN staff member in Afghanistan told Reuters.

The worst previous attack was an insurgent assault on a guesthouse where UN staff were staying in October 2009. Five employees were killed and nine others wounded.

The two largest recent attacks on UN compounds in other countries are a 2007 bomb in Algiers that killed 17 UN staff, and a 2003 attack on the Baghdad hotel that was the UN headquarters there, which killed at least 22 people.

Mazar-i-Sharif has remained relatively peaceful as the insurgency gathers force in other parts of the north, and was recently chosen as one of the first areas for a transition of security from NATO troops to Afghan forces.

Christian preacher Terry Jones, who after international condemnation last year canceled a plan to burn copies of the Koran, supervised the burning of the book in front of a crowd of about 50 people at a church in Florida on March 20, according to his website.

He told the British Broadcasting Corporation that he did not feel guilty over the deaths in Mazar. "We are not responsible for their actions," Jones said, when asked about the attack.

What I don't understand is why haven't these sandniggers behead these ing clowns like Westboro and Terry Jones? I'm sure it would to true PR wonders for their image in the world and actually I'd vote to give them an award

it's hilarious because any anti "jew" comment that is made you flip out and have a childish hissy fit. You do realise judaism is a religion right? And as for sandnigger; don't you think that equates to teh general diaspora of the middle east including israel? Use your head if you have one. You out of your mouth and talk out of your ass.

Redundant idiot.

I guess I could've had more success if I said I converted to scientology, but I was afraid it wouldn't be convincing :p

I haven't read the thread but I feel compelled to address the OP.

Marcus, here are my humble 2 cents just for the sake of discussion and/or maybe to offer a new perspective:

Firstly I have to say I think it's a good thing that you have such a strong opinion on such a complex/controversial "world issue". Personally, I would never be able to have a such a distinct conviction about something of such an enormous scale and bound by so many views, so I have to commend you on that.

That said, I always seem to feel slightly confused and even a bit saddened when I hear someone speaking of "ditching tolerance". I'm a strong believer of something along the lines of "I think everyone should have the right to believe and follow whatever they want (even after they have been exposed to the facts) as long as they aren't hurting anyone". All I care about is that people ARE exposed to, in this case scientific, facts. I view tolerance as a way of the future because, the way I see it, who am I to judge? By no means am saying you have a big ego and feel the need to do so, I am just blurting out the way I would see a situation similar to yours.

Ignorance is ignorance, its context is irrelevant. Chances are the person you are speaking of would say something similarly ill-informed given the chance to, even if everyone in the world including her was an atheist. Creed is a very intimate thing. I know this because I grew up going to church twice a week through most of my childhood. I'm not religious or even "spiritual" now, but being in there for such a long time I have learned to respect it in others and sometimes just let the ignorance roll off my back when it is addressed at me. Some people just don't care enough to be exposed to something else, that's when it becomes their problem and not mine. So I come back to the "who am I to judge?" or "who am I to DICTATE what people believe in or don't believe in?" . I'm not trying to be a goody two-shoes or "promote" world peace, but we're all stuck in this world together. People should be trying to fight less and tolerate more. When it comes to things like this the fighting is endless and it just gets progressively worse.

I respect people trying to open other people's eyes or whatever the motive is, but fact is that creed is so intimate to some that it's just impossible. How does that differ you from someone trying to convert you into their creed? Just because you have scientific evidence to support your conviction, it doesn't mean your intentions are any more noble then theirs. If we can all co-exist believing in different things, why not?

I feel compelled to write a serious post now (I had told Moral Hazard already that it was a prank) :p

Maybe tomorrow morning, the jet lag is making me drowsy already, and it's not even 1 AM :(
