| There's a difference between tolerating someone's right to hold religious opinions vs tolerating the opinions themselves. We tolerate the right of people to be holocaust deniers but we don't tolerate the belief itself. If someone starts spouting that stupidity in public, they deserve ridicule. They deserve to pay a price for clinging to a nonsensical belief for stupid (or nonexistent) reasons. If someone says that they are against gay rights or against the teaching of evolution in biology classes because their magic book said so, they should pay an immediate price for it in terms of "conversational pressure" as Sam Harris puts it. That might mean being a little confrontational from time to time with superstitious folks, or even laughing at their ideas publicly without apologizing for it. If they can't defend their ideas on rational grounds, they'll just have to suck it up and deal with it. Respect their rights to believe whatever they want..yes. Respect the ideas themselves, hell no. |

Sometimes laughing at the kid in 8th grade who still beleives in Santa Claus is the only way to shake him out of his stupor and get him to start questioning things.
