On a side note, once you're done with your gender re-identification process, wouldn't you still have a y chromosome, and thus still technically be a man? :conf: That was the part that always confused me. I'm not doubting the fact that you identify yourself as a woman, but from a genetic standpoint, won't you always be a man? Since from a mental view you already identify yourself as female, isn't the hormone therapy and surgery purely aesthetic?

Hmm I don't think that statement is accurate... there are a ton of butch women and gender nonconforming women of all types (it seems there are more 'types' lesbians than beats per minute in an ember's breaks track :p)

So as for chromosomes:

First of all, I don't know if I'm XY, and most peope don't know their chromosomes. I could be XXY, or XXXY then what would I be? And a natal woman could be XO or XXX, etc.

The fact I am trying to allude to is that society (at least today) doesn't give a what your chromosomes are. Society's definition of 'man' and 'woman' is really only based on primary and secondary sex characteristics.

I will never be a natal woman. I am a transwoman. An XY woman. A belated lady. I'm not after an XX chromosome combination, I am after female sexual characteristics, female physical characteristcs, female endocrine and emotional characteristics, and at times i like to express myself in various degrees of the feminine gender.

I'm proud of you, Avana, that must be absolutely crazy to change yourself so drastically. I have a couple questions, and idk if they have already been answered, but how long have you felt like this? That this was your calling. And why did you wait so long? Do you think your girlfriend will stay with you?

But isn't taking the steps to actually transform your body to possess female sexual characteristics, physical characteristics, and emotional characteristics only perpetuating the social stigma on what constitutes a "woman"? I mean, if you already feel like a woman, it seems like changing your physical characteristics would be more so other people identify you as a woman.

it's a personal need - it's called gender dissonance (the older terminology is gender dysphoria). let me put it bluntly: i can no longer tolerate ing with a penis. to my mind, my body feels like it has been hijacked by male hormones. for most transsexuals, going on hormones resolves the gender dissonance that we constantly battle. some people don't need to go on hormones, or have GRS, but i do. i'm not perpetuating any social stigma, if anything I am living proof that it's bull.

ultimately it comes down to personal expression. why do some women get boob jobs to make themselves feel more womanly? why do some men work out in the gym to get ripped? or buy penis pumps? etc etc.

just because i am transgender does not mean i have a responsibility to deconstruct gender. i have no other goal than to be myself and follow that path wherever it leads me.

Sorry about all the questions. I've just never really known a transgendered person before :p

The way you've been so open about the whole process with a bunch of people you've never met is quite admirable. You've got some real balls.....:stongue:

it's ok, i'm happy to answer questions, it's just that i've already answered some of these in the other thread (SYSTEM J busted my tranny balls on this same point already). It's my opinion that the world would be a better place for trans people (and people at large) if there were more openness and education.

just keep in mind that I'm only one trans person and I hardly speak for all of us. The best thing you can do is to not make assumptions about anyone and respect that person's individual expression and ASK questions you have them.

Whats always sorta bugged me is that transgenders seem to group with transgenders. Even if they get realignment surgery they seem to group with transgenders only, and it becomes more of a culture onto its own self.

They really aren't men or women it seems because they don't assimilate (or they aren't allowed to assimilate) into those groups (though to me it seems to be more of a choice rather than a restriction).

Just find it odd. The trans community is so trampy/campy its annoying. Even if I was gay I can't see it being a community I'd want to be involved with because they just seem annoying.
