I don't think that's necessarily true. While Vista was a huge colossal failure, so was Windows ME, and they recovered quite well with XP. And while Apple is "the cool" brand, Microsoft still has the edge with corporations. It's kind of like why employees are given Blackberries instead of iPhones. Why spend almost twice as much when they both do essentially the same thing?
they recovered quite well with xp but windows 7 is just how windows vista should have been but 2 years later and double price (since you paid for vista and now paid for 7) and i personally don't like it, i'm still using XP and i know a lot of people doing the same because 7 is prettyer but more hardware demanding than xp.

I think it's more the iPhone that did it rather than Apple computers. I'd be interested to see how sales of Apple computers only have changed over the past few years. It's possible that a poor economy could lead to more people buying cheaper computers.
I think it was more the iPod that did it for Apple..
And can someone explain why Vista is so bad??
I'm not huge on computers but I've been using it for a coupla years now on the same laptop and it's been just fine for me...

No idea, I've never had an issue with Vista and I've been using it for a while now.
And yeah, it was the iPod.

Apple only overtook Microsoft as the 2nd most valuable corporation in the US about a year ago. The iPod has been around for 10 years.
Also most of the issues with Vista have been resolved with patches and new service packs. Most of the complaints about it (compatibility problems, performance, crashes, etc.) have since been fixed.

Mac's first commercial. It's weird to think this super trendy company was making computers before I was born.

I'm not saying the iPod wasn't a large part of Apple's success over the past decade, I'm just saying it wasn't the reason for their overtaking of Microsoft. Apple sold over 18 million iPhones this past quarter. Every time there's a new iPhone released, millions of people buy it, even if they already have an iPhone. There aren't people camping out for days before the release of the newest iPod.
I think it's pretty common sense that if the iPod has been around for 10 years, and Apple just passed Microsoft last year, then the iPod wasn't the reason.
Edit: as of January 2011, 304 million ipods had been sold worldwide since its' introduction 10 years ago. They've sold 108 million iPhones in 3 years. Also take into consideration that the cheapest iPhone is still much more expensive than the average cost of an iPod.

Of course it was. The iPod was what launched their popularity into the stratosphere. There's a reason why it's often cited as one of the best examples of marketing brilliance in any business class that you take.
The iPod was the catalyst that led to what Apple is today.

i'm a bit of a fan of apple. have the quad-core 27" iMac, the AIR, the iPhone 4, the Apple TV and also got the mac-mini as a gift to my mom last year.

That's a good point. I wasn't thinking about the influence that the iPod had in leading people to buy other Apple products.
Still, without the iPhone I don't think Apple would be in the same position that they are now.
