I think he is right. I remember reading somewhere that Apple only gets about 5 cents per song. I believe they sell about 500,000 songs per week, so that's only $100,000 per month. |

Just because they use Intel chips now doesn't mean they're the same as other PCS. Also, the computers themselves are not the same. Apple's are not as cheaply made as Dells, HPs, etc. and that is part of the reason they cost more. Yes, you're paying mostly for the name, but saying that Apple products are practically the same as PCS with a different OS isn't really true. |
Also there is a premium on design...
And Apples design team is second to none... |

Ok well I kinda figured that I'd get this reaction from somebody seeing as not everyone shares similar tastes...
But you have to admit that their design is growing on a lot of consumers...
Hell, some people love blackberry design. I think it's brutal... |

I was slightly incorrect...
In the App Store, the devs get 70%, Apple gets 30%...
In iTunes, the artist gets 9 cents profit per song...
Look up iTunes Store and App Store in Wiki. It's all there...
Btw, over 10B apps have been downloaded and over 10B songs have been sold...
Apple has 88% of the LEGAL music download market.... |

Like their end product or not, this is not really a debatable point. |

You should look into QNX. They make a really cool OS. I believe it's being used on Blackberry's upcoming tablet.

I don't really see corporations on a large scale switching over to Linux-type OSes, as it would waste a lot of time and money training all of their employees on how to use them.
I hadn't heard that about Steam. I used to play L4D a lot, but once I started work which involved sitting at a computer all day, it has become less and less appealing to sit on a computer when I'm home. |
I don't see Linux replacing Windows desktop OS. I do see a myriad of cloud-based services replacing the infrastructure for a large number of small-mid businesses and partial "cloudification" of large businesses.
Majority of vendors are banking on it:
Microsoft, Apple, EMC/VMWare, Oracle, Citrix, tons of LOB (line of business) apps vendors, etc. It is already possible to run your entire operation without having a single server on premise, only some enterprise networking equipment: routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers.
Even Apple is now entering the cloud. Your computer of the future may not be much more in concept than same old forgotten "dummy terminal" - e.g display, keyboard, mouse (or touchscreen, a la iPad).
The last barrier is bandwidth and security. However, on the desktop, those that remain with a desktop due to business requirements will not be likely to switch away from Windows. Microsoft is still making a killing in a business world.
However, Win7 sales have been lack luster for a variety of reasons. Here are some of my guesses:
1. Win Vista was crap, many companies remained on WinXP
2. Win7, successor to Vista has very aggressive HW requirements, due to financial conditions, many companies are opting to remain afloat instead of being on the bleeding edge and spending tons of money for the hardware upgrade + OS upgrade
3. Upgrade cost is further burdened by the need to also train staff, beef up back end infrastructure, etc.
4. WinXP official End of Life (no more hotfixes): 2014 - no need to rush to upgrade.
Lastly, in conclusion, to the OP: the author of that ragpiece you cited must have went to the Charlie Sheen School of #WINNING:

p.s. I don't think Bill Gates is crying by any stretch of imagination. |

An AP Technology writer? Yeah, they're not usually very credible. It's fine if Windows reported a record quarter. That has zero to do with how they are now in second place. |

Some of their laptops look okay, but most of their stuff just looks like it'd break if i touch it, or just looks stupid. imo. i much rather prefer my asus laptop. it looks like it's made out of carbon fiber :) |

Their laptops? A lot of the components all made from the same manufacturers, largely in south east Asia. I'm not talking the same region or same town, I'm saying the exact same factories. Half of the you're getting in your Dell, HP etc is the exact same you're getting in your Macbook. There's no quality difference whatsoever. |

I'm the opposite. I'm not crazy about their laptops. Sharp aluminum edge digs into your arms. The keyboard seems too small. And I like to see the touchpad...
I love their comps though with everything integrated in a huge screen. I'd consider one as a home computer...
I also love the iPhone and iPad designs. iOS is a UI that I love to use... |
