It was good meeting you as well, mate, and it was as easy as I thought it would be to spot the punk rocker ;)
Here's a quick review:
My 1st trip to Guv got off to a ropey start, having thought that I could just breeze in with my advance ticket at 1am, after leisurely watching the UFC fights. The bouncer soon sobered me up by telling me that the queue snaked around about 50 corners, out onto the main road! I eventually got in after nearly an hour, with just enough time for last orders.
Diggers soon helped me forget that I missed half of his set. Having stood towards the back at first, I needed to get a better view the legend - bad mistake! The heat was so intense at the front, that I eventually had to escape to get some fresh air, and ended up missing even more of his set - arggh! Towards the end, he seemed to bring the tempo down for the last couple of tracks, and dare I say it, he was sounding mortal! I guess, with his extended set, I should just shut up and be thankful for being able to recover 40 minutes from the earlier show.
I left to get another breather as soon as M&S came on, but wish I had given them more of a chance, because when I returned at 5:30am, the were playing some stellar stuff.
I'm happy to report that the staff did not short-change me; the only person who shafted me was a cretinous punter who stole my water whilst I was stood at the bar.
Overall, that was exactly the kind of enchanting spell that I was expecting from the wizard...now let's start a petition for him to play at DEMF 2012 :D |

Lol don't listen to that whiner that got punked. There are definitely some bars where that's common place but I can tell you the guv isn't one of them. Been there tons of times and myself/friends have never once had problems with bar staff, in fact for the BS they have to put up with I'd say they're some of the best in Toronto. |

Consistency has been Sasha's gripe but more so after the 90's, then again every DJ has boring sets, Digweed included. What I was talking about specifically is that no other DJ comes close to touching Sasha when he's on even if they bring their A game.

hes a pioneer. i think he even had the first all digital mix on radio ones essential mix. i remember having a set from that emix and pete tong broadcasting that all digital mix.
hes been on and off but boy when he is on he is on. if you ever listen to his space of sound, madrid mix from a few years ago... it will blow you away with the mixing and programming.
digweed is in a league of his own. his mixing and programming are perfect each time i hear one of his mixes. the buildup is another story.... you wont see it coming!
its amazing though they never really practice together, but if youve heard serveral of their mixes/sets.... they are bang on going back and forth playing for 4+hours. they really compliment each other like they were a constant duo. |

I was refering specifically to programming and mixing. No doubt Sasha can still play a great set musically but IMO he's not in the technical department that Digweed is when it comes to having to playing a set over an extended period. |

I was actually appalled to hear some beatmatching issues in the MoS set that Sasha has posted from last Dec. so I don't about him mixing better than Diggers but then again everyone has off days and if you're in the club, you can't really notice the errors. I think my biggest problem with that set and some others, is that he seems to be holding back too much and it just got boring so fast. Sasha seems to play more 'varied' tracks and takes more risks for sure, but Digweed seems to stay mostly with the same style of tracks and maybe takes less risks but that creates an expectation of what you expect to hear.
I dunno I was the biggest Sasha mark a few years ago but Diggers has been solid in T.O. for like the last few times he's been here... |
