seriously, there's nothing left to do BUT laugh at montreal's electronic scene.

It's really, really sad.

You've got to be kidding. Go to any other city in North America and then see what you think. If you're comparing to Europe, you may have a case, but otherwise, you should really appreciate what you have.

i'll start by saying: disclaimer...i am referring mainly to afterhours parties, not 10pm-3am parties.

one can't compare for example, berlin to montreal. berlin is a haven that nurtures this music; montreal is a dump that recycles it. and the latter, i've heard from people around the world.

so no witty, i wish i was kidding. i've been to toronto many times & i know alot about new york's scene and how it works; miami's as well as chicago's. there's 4 different north american cities. sad to say, but these days, those cities kill us in terms of professionalism, organization, budget, crowd, venues, etc...

i, of all people i know, really do appreciate what i have. i'm not trying to come off as "holier than thou"...but i'm at stereo every single friday and have been for the last 6 years practically, supporting, bringing my friends out every weekend and seeing 50 people on that dancefloor for class talent. that's in the last year or so...for the 5 years before that, i was supporting almost every weekend too...and it was slamming every single weekend.

something has gone very wrong in the last year or so. case in point: dj three had maybe 50 people there to hear him. ben klock had a mere 300 people when he started playing. when he finished, he had maybe 100. compare that to his gig the night before in nyc when he played at good units, it was a soldout party days in advance, with a capacity i think of approximately 700 people. they can fill a 700 person venue in nyc with ben klock, but not in montreal. yes, i know they serve booze in nyc, but still, that's getting to be an old scapegoat excuse.

it's just extremely frustrating these days. it's a constant struggle, a gamble for club owners and bookers, and in turn, a chance that the fans will give up on mtl's scene altogether.

it breaks my heart when i see legit people bust their asses to bring talent, and they rarely get anything in return. add to that, promoters from competing venues making inappropriate, childish remarks on public forums about djs having to cancel their gigs here for reasons beyond anybody's control...add it all up, and you have a very competitive, bitter scene. god forbid we work together, share our residents, share our international bookings, go in together on flight shares, hotel rooms for artists, etc...no, that would make too much sense. i believe montreal is way too small a city to be this competitive. just work together, share the wealth...i sincerely believe there would be improvements that would drastically better montreal's afterhours scene.

I wasn't trying to come off as sounding harsh. Sorry if it sounded that way. I just meant that in terms of a city where dance music is received well as a culture, Montreal has it pretty good. Other cities bring artists and their business is handled professionally, but there is less culture as far as I have seen. Montreal's culture is lacking compared to years past, but it is still better than most.

Are you talking just afterhours, or just afterhours on Fridays at Stereo? I started going to Stereo in 2000, and every single Friday was tumbleweeds unless there's a big name DJ. It's the curse of the club unfortunately. I don't know the social mechanics behind it, but that's the way it has always been. I respect the fact that they (you included) are trying to bring more innovative bookings on Fridays. I like knowing those artists are being brought in. I just think that when you've got lesser known (comparatively) artists on a day of the week that has never done well, its a double whammy. I totally understand your frustration. At the same time, it's not really Montreal you're thinking little of as much as it is Fridays at Stereo. As far as I see (given I go out less than I used to) Stereo on Saturdays are doing pretty well, aren't they?

As for Francis' comment, I don't think it was meant maliciously, but given the tension that exists between the two establishments, he should have known better. While I do like a bit of spirited back and forth on these forums (which are more dead than Stereo on Fridays ;) ), I don't actually enjoy the animosity that boils beneath the surface between the two clubs. To be fair to Circus, I don't know if you went on Mtlnights much a while back, but there was way more Circus bashing from Stereo patrons than I have ever seen on this board coming the other way.

There's a difference between patrons doing the bashing and someone who is directly connected to the club.
