I am afraid we do not live in a perfect world!

Might be one of those things in Huddersfield, but it ain't anywhere else, English people seem to have more respect for people.

A lot of thought has gone into this thread by the looks of things but aren't you reading too much into it?

The next time I hear a derogatory term from anybody on this forum like "This track is straight" I'm gonna go ape.

i happen to be chinese, and usually i dont get fussy about racial slurs, but why would u censor out the african slur and leave the chinese/asian slur there?

i didnt yo.. tranceaddict automatically did. i hope you dont think i was personally trying to offend peopl ethat are chinese.... because my whole point of the post was that i dont use those words, ever. i was trying to make a point.

id continue on but it looks like proxi and others are doing a damn good job without me having to step in again.

word to cortexbomb, who just said exactly what ive been trying to say since response 1 (tho he said it a little nicer :p)

I can understand the fact that a lot of people have grown up with gay being used, and that breaking out of the habit doesn't seem like it's worth the effort, but I still don't agree with it. The usage, like any other deragatory slang, *does* show disrespect whether you intend it to or not; and by continuing to use it you *will* appear to be something that I don't think a lot of you are, ignorant.

Well, in a way, it IS pathetic. you see, having a phobia means you have an irrational fear of smth. And irrational means you don't have a legitimate reason to fear it. Therefore still fearing it, after you've been told there's nothing to be afraid of, is pathetic :D
How mean is that huh :)

See, I'm slightly afraid of flying. Aerophobia is actually a rational fear, as flying isn't rational for a human being. However, flying in an aircraft is perfectly safe, so, if I still have Aerophobia after I've been explained how incredibly safe flying is, I develop a phobia. An irrational fear of flying. :)

Anyhow, the word pathetic can be interpreted in several ways I believe.
Pathetic can mean you feel sorry for that person.
Pathetic can also mean you think that person IS a sorry-ass :D

As for homophobes, to me the second option counts. How irrational can a fear be!! You see, the classic homophobe is a person that is actually a homo him/her self , but (due to various reasons) is too afraid to admit it! Why would you be afraid of revealing your true identity!
Secondly, no gay person will just jump on you and rape you, so that's where the fear is irrational too! See, being a homo isn't contageous! Speaking of which..it isn't even a disease! It's who you are!

But still..if you want to be afraid of people that are differently...suit yourself. Just, for the sake of human intelligence and respect, keep it to yourself :)

i am NOT taking sides here.....but i was reading through this thread...and what Miss P said above is brilliant....i never thought of phobias in that way....VERY WELL said...if we had karma u would get ++++++KK........anyway i will leave u guys to argue..

CortexBomb>>Some nice points there, it's nice to know I'm not alone.

more to say on the matter eh ;) i think there is about a 0.001% gay population on here mate, coupled with tonnes of people from over the ocean the word gay get used loads as on offensive term. i just feel sorry for anyone else who actually is gay, i mean, its like me going on the GC boards, everyone slates dumonde :stongue:

A lot of gay people will laugh stuff like this off, but I think most of them, when you get right down to it, *are* bothered my it, but either start using the terms themselves, or feign indifference so they don't "cause problems" or what-have-you with their mates.

Just my 2 cents on the matter...

While I can't say from personal experience, it would seem logical to me that they woudnt need to feign indifference. In todays world, were you can still get beat up, or moked for being gay, coming out of the closet so to speak seems to suggest that they don't need to conform to others. Additionally my gay freinds happened to come over right as I was typing my last post in this thread last night so we discussed it a bit. From what I understand the general consensus is that because people don't refer to them as gay(at least in a derogatory manner), it doesn't bother them or most other homosexuals, as it simply doesn't refer to homosexuals most of the time. If you asked 99% of the people who use gay as a derogatory term they'll say that they have nothing against homosexuals, and it's a slang term for stupid or something similar.
