Hey guys,
can anyone recommend a good vst for pad sounds?
What waveform do you start off with to create pads anyway? Im trying to learn how to make sounds myself.
cheers, |

| One of the best is Omnisphere. There are a ton of brilliant presets. Instant inspiration. |

+1 :)
Also Tone2 Gladiator is great synth for all kind of pads, atmospheres
for typical big room , trancy pad sound just use layered saw waveform with some additional flavour coming from different waveforms (ie. sine)
I created short tutorial long time ago
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyG_0BdSkuw
just go to the end of the movie for the final result (soft, warm pad)
it's pretty much all about :
1. stacking saw waveforms on top
2. stacking some other waveforms on bottom - i like to stack sine waveforms and very, very slightly detune them so you'll get pretty natural movement, not static sound
3. pan the oscillators a little bit left and right to get the sound wider
4. use chorus, delay, reverb to get even more wide, lushy sound
5. play with filter - i like to set some resonance
6. use EQ (i like to bump some mid-high frequencies)
7. depending on synth - you can use some LFO to modulate pitch of some oscillator - nice subtle vibrato can make your pad better or just modulate some oscillator volume so you'll get some evolving pad
8. in the video i use synth with FM Matrix so it's easy to add some sparkles here and there ;)
but to be honest "pad synths" such as Omnisphere, Gladiator2 are much better for pads (and quicker) than some typical VA synth. |

+1 for Omnisphere and Alchemy. I'd also throw Native Instruments Absynth 5 in there for another synth with many good pad presets and excellent pad-making capabilities.
If you're trying to learn to design your own pads, though, personally I think Omnisphere is probably the easiest to program of those three. And, of course, you can make excellent pads with any good VA. As mentioned, Tone2 Gladiator 2 is excellent.
All that said, I would highly recommend checking out Synapse Audio DUNE - its differential-unison architecture lends itself very nicely to creating thick lush pads. It also has a very straightforward interface, excellent support, and the price is reasonable. It comes with 300+ categorized presets, including a ton of nice pads. And, since the interface is so straightforward (only the mod matrix and arp are in menus, all other parameters on permanently displayed on the GUI), it's very easy to reverse-engineer the presets to see how they were made.

Another +1 for Omni/Alchemy/Absynth
On the other hand, 5 instances of Synth1 will sound spectacular if you know what you're doing and you throw it through a nice reverb. |

| If you are on the free side Zebralette and Synth1 are pretty good. |

Nice dave!
Somehow had never heard of Dune before. Think this is my next purchase.....You must be one rich bastard if you're on commission with software manufacturers :toothless |

thanks guys, ive checked out a lot of the synths mentioned and gotta say im impressed by omnisphere, think i'll start saving some cash! Tonight im gonna set aside a few hours to try to make some of my own pad sounds, however I will still purchase something cause I often look for inspiration in presets, I like stumbling across a patch that makes you play a particular way and really gets the creative juices going.
Wish me luck with my pad building!

Omnisphere is awesome as has been mentioned.
The other one is Korg Wavestation. The VST is so damn good that I'm actually tempted to buy the actual piece of hardware. |
