This is very, very good for the electronic music scene. This will undoubtedly bring a lot more attention to it.

I agree that Skrillex is awesome. Listening to one of his songs on YouTube doesn't do him justice. You have to see him live. I saw him at DEMF this past May and it was ing ridiculous.

I think its quite the opposite, and a step backwards for the EDM scene.

If Skrillex is someone's first impression of Electronic music, than I highly doubt they will be excited to go search for more. I know most of you guys don't like Dubstep to begin with, but he is probably the worst choice to represent the Genre. Whatever it is he makes isn't even considered Dubstep by most listeners, its some sort of Metal.. Glitch Pop/Rock.. I don't even know. But what I do know, is that it has no 'Dub' elements at all.

The type of people who are into Skrillex don't even know what real Dubstep is. I've been approached by many people at school/work because of some D&B/Dubstep buttons I have on my backpack, and not once did anyone know Loefah, Digital Mystikz, Benga, Matty G, J:jeknzo .. the list goes on. Obviously the top40 crowd is not going to embrace slow repetitive basslines, but come on.. 5 nominations for that crap? I don't even like Deadmau5 and even I think he's made a much bigger impact on EDM than this tool.

Take this with a grain of salt, but rumor has it that Skrillex has never even produced a full recording, and that its all Deadmau5/Mau5trap. Several other people have stated he doesn't even spin at shows, just clicks play and jumps around. Unfortunately for me and everyone else who hates this guy, he is definitely going to win one of those Grammys, and because of that will become a household name. It's been a bad year for Dubstep.. to say the least, lol.

Who really gives a what other people listen to? People listening to "bad" music doesn't make "good" music any worse. Lol.

What's with the juvenile need to protect "your" music from everyone else? Get a life or grow up. Or something. You all sound ridiculous and stupid.

Hmm.. you make a good point. It's not that I really care what other people listen to, but I would a rather deserving artist receive recognition than someone like Skrillex.

He has barely been in the scene for a couple of years, and the music he makes is nothing short of generic sounding metal with some electronic influence. Even though the Grammys are a total joke to begin with, it could have gone to someone better.

Winning an award doesn't make music any better or worse. All it does is provide validation for the artist, and what's wrong with that? Why should it bother people so much?

I guess that really says something about the power of music, that people can get so personally offended by what's deemed popular in the mainstream. Lol.

You actually said it pretty well, music can be very powerful. Watching a genre grow from nothing to something, you gain a certain respect for it.

I had high hopes for Dubstep when it transferred over from the UK scene. I honestly thought the North American masses would love the slow melodic beats that the other side of the world has gone ape over. I couldn't of been more wrong.. lol. For me, it's more a sense of disappointment than anger, but yes it does bother a little bit as well.

I'm just ranting though.. I know in reality there's nothing I can do to change the way people think of Skrillex. I'll just have to put up with his crap for a couple more years until people get bored of his sound. :nervous:

I'm guessing it's because people invest so much of their identity into the type of music they listen to...that if/when what they like doesn't catch on, it's somehow an affront to their own ego. As if one's taste is validated/invalidated by how many other people agree with it or not.

I don't think the problem here is that people are unhappy that proper dubstep hasn't caught on. I know I couldn't care less about that. My problem with artists like Skrillex is that they've tainted the word (not that I think they've done it on purpose). They've made it so I don't like telling people I listen to dubstep because of what that means to most people. I constantly find myself having to justify the music I listen to, because almost any way you cut it dubstep's become a bad word. Odds are you run into someone who likes artists like Skrillex or Excision, and then you have to explain why those aren't the artists you listen to, or you run into someone who knows Skrillex and Excision but thinks it's garbage, and so you have to explain how that's not what dubstep is supposed to sound like. It's a constant discussion, just look at the YouTube comment section of any dubstep tune with more than 10,000 views.

It's just exhausting and frustrating. I could deal with dubstep being unknown; I'm much happier explaining something to someone from the ground up than having to try and undo a bunch of faulty assumptions.

Again, who gives a ? You don't see how ridiculous it sounds to get all butthurt because "artists like Skrillex are 'tainting the sound'" and therefore you don't like to admit you listen to a certain type of music because having a discussion about it is exhausting and frustrating?? You sound like an idiot, lol. No offense.

lol what the hell is wrong with you? Do you have some kind of ASBO? God forbid you engage in some semblance of discussion with another human being face to face. Boo hoo someone thinks you like Skrillex because you like dubstep? Just tell them you don't like Skrillex, is that difficult?

It happens to me at work all the time, co-workers will hear me listening to something and come and try to relate to me on that level by rattling off these random house DJs and producers they've heard on the radio or some blog their friends like and ask if I like or have heard of them. I just say no. The best is when they say "check it out, I think you'll like it". Like, okay buddy, why don't you leave the tastemaking to the DJs lol

My point is, you're a giant baby.

edit //
You guys realize that this is the first time since they've added the dance music category that they've actually nominated dance music people, right? Are you somehow offended that an award ceremony celebrating the best in popular music is celebrating popular dance music? Be happy they've actually included Deadmau5 and Steve Angello instead of just finding ways for Lady Gaga to win awards for ripping off Madonna.
