If it gets other people to think "hey, I kinda like that" and go discover more EDM. I'm all for it. None of you dived headfirst into EDM and surfaced up in the Resident Advisor pool.
Think of how much other music you got exposed to last night (if you watched it), now think that maybe none of that is something you would usually listen to, or were ever even exposed to (Niki Minaj excepted, no one needed to see that).
Now if you as an avid EDM aficionado, ting on the nominees for dance and related performances or other categories, hear something else and like it, you make seek out more and discover more of that. And THAT is what music is all about. Discovery...
On the flip side, maybe now some kids who tuned in to see their boi Skrillex win Best New Artist, and see the Mau5 rock a performance with Lil Wayne and Chris Brown... MAYBE they will now look up some Foo Fighters, and then discover Nirvana, and then discover grunge. I would have no in problem in the world with that! And vica versa... some rocker alt kid now hears the EDM side, sees Grohl jamming out to Deadmau5, and now thinks, hey maybe this "techno" is not all so bad. And he/she seeks out more.
It's in music... less scrutiny, more enjoying! :) |

^^ Yes.
I was watching the Live feed on TA's Google Analytics last night during the Grammy's and some interesting stuff was coming through...
Namely, searches on "Skrillex's equipment setup" landing people in this thread (23 replies but 7500+ views)
...and a bunch of others including noobs googling "who the hell is deadmau5" :haha: |

Saw that... stand up guy. Shame he couldn't have done those speeches during the actual broadcast so people could see how humble and down to earth he is and maybe help push a positive image of EDM to the general public who may have a negative impression. |

| quote: | | "I think the Grammys were really smart to have that dance segment outside in a tent with a really amped crowd to try the best they could to re-create what it actually feels like to be at a proper dance show," Caulfield told MTV News. "I think what we're going to see is not entirely a sales boost, but I think we're going to see more people interested in going to dance shows, electronic shows and festivals because if you saw that performance and were like, 'Wow, I want to be in the middle of that,' maybe the next time one of these big festivals happens there could be a bump in ticket sales or Skrillex can go on a bigger tour. |
| quote: | | "Electronic acts really resonate with a younger audience who may not necessarily buy full albums," Caulfield said. "They may be experiencing music that's been shared, is on YouTube, has gone viral or is a mixtape they downloaded. It's much harder to gauge that kind of consumer reaction. So I'm thinking the most tangible way will be in festivals and concerts, that sort of thing." |
