I think you need to give people more credit. After a while, many of these people will want to branch out from the more accessible stuff. The electronic music scene is growing massively in North America, which is causing the "underground" (although I almost dislike using this term) to grow as well. This has been happening in Toronto for a while now. I have seen and been to an increasing amount of interesting, niche electronic music events (for example Mount Kimbie, Little Dragon, SBTRKT) during the past couple of years. These types of events simply didn't happen 5 years ago here.
You make it seem that this issue is unique to Dubstep and Skrillex. This the natural lifecycle of every modern genre of music. The genre starts in the underground, becomes popular, and then an artist emerges to appeal to the masses. Witness David Guetta with house music, Puff Daddy with hip hop, and Skrillex with dubstep. This is just the way it works. If it wasn't Skrillex, it would have been someone else that you would have hated equally.

Well put. I do agree that he is providing more exposure to the scene, this cannot be denied by anyone. Hopefully what you described does happen to Dubstep, and the 'underground' guys get some well deserved spotlight.
You're totally right about the life cycle of music, I didn't mean to say it was specific to Dubstep at all. The Grammy nomination does make this situation a little bit different, but like I said before.. who the f*** cares about the Grammy's. I guess it just happened a lot sooner than I expected.. lol. |
