Be happy they've actually included Deadmau5 and Steve Angello instead of just finding ways for Lady Gaga to win awards for ripping off Madonna. |

Again, who gives a ? You don't see how ridiculous it sounds to get all butthurt because "artists like Skrillex are 'tainting the sound'" and therefore you don't like to admit you listen to a certain type of music because having a discussion about it is exhausting and frustrating?? You sound like an idiot, lol. No offense. |
I volunteer at a radio station, have a show of my own, and edit the station's magazine; music comes up a lot. It's not really a discussion I can avoid having; I'm in an environment where people will ask me, one way or another. How do you suggest I stop giving a ? It is frustrating and exhausting to have to explain something all the time, and I don't think that's an unreasonable way to feel. |

Thank you for showing me how stimulating and pleasant discussing with people can be. Now I see how I've been going about this all wrong. |

| Your attitude about music seems pretty immature for someone who hosts/runs a radio show + magazine. |

So you actually have a forum in which to educate people and you find it "frustrating"? Maybe you chose the wrong career? |

I love showing people new music and trying to educate; that's not the part that's frustrating. It's frustrating running into people who think Skrillex invented dubstep, or people who think dubstep is nothing but fart noises (a direct quote I've heard often, not my interpretation) and refuse to hear any differently. Dubstep's become a hot topic, for people who are both for or against it, that creates a lot of hard-headed, ignorant people. Trying to have a discussion can easily turn into just banging your head against a wall. That part is frustrating.
Hell, here's a prime example:

Someone can't even promote a show without that kind of non-sense popping up. |

^ It's absolutely true. It's not that I don't like discussing my choice in music with most people, but I tend to leave Dubstep out because it turns into an argument.
Why is it so wrong that some of us are offended by this nomination? Skrillex is and has been the worst thing to ever happened to Dubstep, and giving him a damn grammy isn't going to help the situation at all. Again, it's awesome that EDM is being recognized, but I don't understand why he out of all people was chosen to represent such a large crowd of talented artists. |

I had high hopes for Dubstep when it transferred over from the UK scene. |
...and look what it's become! It has brought electronic music to a massive amount of people who probably weren't listening to electronic music 2-3 years ago.
I think you need to give people more credit. After a while, many of these people will want to branch out from the more accessible stuff. The electronic music scene is growing massively in North America, which is causing the "underground" (although I almost dislike using this term) to grow as well. This has been happening in Toronto for a while now. I have seen and been to an increasing amount of interesting, niche electronic music events (for example Mount Kimbie, Little Dragon, SBTRKT) during the past couple of years. These types of events simply didn't happen 5 years ago here.

I'm guessing it's because people invest so much of their identity into the type of music they listen to...that if/when what they like doesn't catch on, it's somehow an affront to their own ego. As if one's taste is validated/invalidated by how many other people agree with it or not. |
This is an interesting and thoughtful take on things. I would have never thought about this. I enjoy your perspective Jen!

You make it seem that this issue is unique to Dubstep and Skrillex. This the natural lifecycle of every modern genre of music. The genre starts in the underground, becomes popular, and then an artist emerges to appeal to the masses. Witness David Guetta with house music, Puff Daddy with hip hop, and Skrillex with dubstep. This is just the way it works. If it wasn't Skrillex, it would have been someone else that you would have hated equally.
As an aside, I've been to both Skrillex and Excision parties: both of have been used as examples of bad dubstep. However, both parties were very enjoyable. The music was fun, the crowd was loving it, and had the party had an energy level that I rarely see at any other parties. Sure, it's more "easy-listening" than other more obscure dubstep artists which I also listen to, but it made for a really good time.
I used to be a hardened music snob (I'm sure some would still call me a snob :p), but learned that I should give all types of music a chance, or else I could be missing out on fun and interesting experiences. If you don't like it, there is no sense in trashing the genre and belittling the people who listen to it. It is better to simply recognize that it is not your preference, and simply move on.

Winning an award doesn't make music any better or worse. All it does is provide validation for the artist, and what's wrong with that? Why should it bother people so much?
I guess that really says something about the power of music, that people can get so personally offended by what's deemed popular in the mainstream. Lol. |

Good point Jenny (Can I call you jenny? don't know you personally but from constant eavesdropping I've noticed dat is ur name! :P) I'm not too concerned with protecting "good" music, but like you said and after some thought I have to remember that music is subjective and there shouldn't be the need to care what other people like or pursue.
Additionally, I also agree that music is immensely powerful and has been apart of society for so long that it undoubtedly influences people's opinions, values and thoughts.
Even though I have my own tastes, to each their own. Gotta stop getting so but-hurt about what other people are listening to :p |
