im all for voicing opinions on music.. but dropping sexist remarks like that article showed from FB posters and me reading some of that violent hate comments on insomniac's FB page even BEFORE feifei played is a bit much... i mean really..is that necessary?
there's plenty of djs i dont like but i dont go to the point of saying like that..which ties back to the lack of plur and just partiers vibes being so ty lately... |
yeah, those comments on the FB are a bit extreme. But keep in mind that those comments were mainly made by idiots. Oh yes, these are the same idiots complaining about Gareth Emery. Yet, Gareth Emery destroyed the dance floor and got people all warmed up for Armin van Buuren. |

so i'm about 15 min into gareth emery's set..and ya, fans like electro but really? i guess there is a reason why they call him gareth house mafia.

40 min into the set, definitely changed up the sound a bit to his older style.
i dont really use the crowd reaction as a gauge of how good the music is..they will cheer for anything that remotely resmbles electro loll. |

That is not a great article!
"DJ Fei Fei, started off the afternoon as one of the opening performers, playing her typical trademark sound. For the average Fei Fei fan, this was pretty standard stuff and quite expected. But for the rest of us, she played a set almost exclusively consisting of the only style of music that is capable of bringing out the worst in EDM subculture, eliciting only the most hateful and vitriolic comments we could ever muster. "

I haven't gotten around to posting anything yet, but here's a brief review.
We got there right as the huge pour prior to 1600 happened. No issues getting in as they opened the doors at least 15 mins early to ease the impact of the rain. It was pouring and I was soaked but was happy to get in quickly. No issues with security - I'll say this again, if you are in doubt about bringing something in, just don't bring it. I was battling a cold and would have loved to bring in some Contact or something to battle it down by night's end, but I knew I wouldn't get it in and just said, "Battle through it man!"
As soon as I got in I went to the merchandise booth, to get me a ASOT 550 Tee-shirt. I wound up buying one of the black Insomniac hoodies as well to stay warm in. No joke, as the salesperson turned to hit the register button so I could pay, the entire city lost power. How do I know... it was the talk of the grounds for like 20 minutes. My friend had cash so she got herself a shirt and paid mine after they got one of the four drawers open. I was warm for the rest of the night.
We meandered over to the ASOT stage and caught the end of Fei Fei's set. I was disappointed to hear how much dubstep she was playing, especially given the context of the event, and how many I loathe the genre. I remembered the old Fei Fei, the trance Fei Fei, and hoped for a reappearance. It didn't happen, but I didn't worry about it too much. She had soem track that had some guy playing guitar on stage with her, but I wasn't really paying attention. LOL...
Shogun came on and instantly things got better. The stage wasn't that crowded and we kept getting closer and closer. Shogun's set was a nice warm up for the night, though a little vocal heavy. Admittedly, after Fei Fei kept me back in the tent, Shogun called me forward to dance with the rest of the people. I've got maybe 30 mins of footage from his set to post after a little editing.
Then came my favorite set of the night - Sied! He blew it up imo. Everyone is in love with JoC's set, but to me Sied absolutely killed it without being way over the top. This set was more what I expected when compared to the Exchange gig a month back prior to Aly & Fila. The energy for the slot was flawless imo, even with the one "trance-step" song I heard. Dyro & Jacob van Hage - EMP will totally be added to my crate! Even one of my photographer buddies mentioned, "It just keeps hitting good track after good track" when discussing Shogun and Sied.
Seeing as JoC and Aly & Fila (both of whom I got to chat with) had been here fairly recently and Arty / Gareth really haven't been playing my thing, my friend and I took leave to go hear Green Velvet. On the way over we stopped at the 3D blacklight art thing, which if you didn't get to it, you missed out. That thing was a really cool way of doing art. Once in the techno room we heard him storm it! The bass was loud but not overpowering, and Velvet even did a live vocal version of La-La-Land. By live vocals, I mean he went old school and plugged his headphones into the mic plug and started signing. That was an awesome sight.
From there we meandered over to hear Camo & Krooked and support the Hospital Records crew that came out. They were tearing it up with their regular sound and rocked that room right. The only dubstep I heard was like 90 second breakdowns between tracks... you know, the way dubstep started way back when as a half tempo break in the middle of a DnB track. It was so refreshing to hear so little dubstep on the Bassrush stage.
After that, we meandered off to see the various art displays as there was no one we were itching to see. Dirty South had come on, Adam Beyer hadn't started yet and Arty should have been coming on soon. We wanted to see Adam, but since we had time we went walking to take in the atmosphere. Again, if you can't take the time to appreciate those details that Insomniac puts in, you are missing part of what makes there events so much more than a concert in my opinion. Ambiance should be something that festival makers dive into more. The art pieces were really neat and included the lily-pads on the little pond, paper lanterns in the trees, the bamboo teepees, the art car bumping techno by locals / unknowns, the really cool multiple colored thing I can't describe that was a tower, and the Spire of Fire. It was funny seeing the mermaid there too; it looked so dated!
We stopped by for Arty but after the earlier ASOT550 set from him, I couldn't sit and listen to him when Adam Beyer was playing. Adam wound up rocking the techno room well! His set was varied and interesting. I was upset I had missed him in LA recently, but was happy I could make up here. No disappointment especially because we were able to get right up to the barrier with no hardships.
About 15 minutes before Adam wrapped up, we jumped back to the DnB stage for some Hospital Records madness again, this time courtesy of High Contrast. We walked in right as he dropped the Adele remix he did. The whole place blew up in sing along, as expected. Actually, he did a lot of back and forth in his set of big remixes and then other DnB tunes. It was a neat set, but I was sort of disappointed we didn't hear more of his new LP that just dropped. I would have loved hearing "The Road Goes On Forever." It didn't happen however.
We stuck around and caught Andy C's Alive tour, which really was neat. An HD projector was used to project a variety of images on his stage set up and his performance was awesomely varied. He even dropped Body Rock by Shimon and himself from the back catalog right as we left to catch Armin. Made my night hearing such an old track still rock a room like that.
Armin's tent was beyond packed, so since the drugs combating the cold I have had worn off, I opted to stay on the outskirts of the tent... coughing on no one in particular lol. Armin played really well. I was surprised hearing Fire Wire for sure! We opted to hit the road back to San Diego before the crowd and left around 0115. We got to the car, tuned the XM radio to Electric Area, and caught the rest on the road. Hearing him drop the mashup with Advanced was another treat. We never hit traffic but did hit a long traffic break while CalTrans apparently scraped ice off the I-15 in Temecula on the way back.
Super fun party in my opinion. I never ran into really rude people, or people that didn't seem happy to be there. Maybe it was the weather keeping that away, but I think its the mentality people bring with them to the party changing. I agree Fei Fei was out of place though, and Armin excusing it as "Don't be a prisoner of your own style" was not the best excuse in the world. She didn't ruin the overall night though and the event went really well overall for me despite the early rains (it never rained past maybe 1700) and the mud. |

She's been very dubstep, so I'm surprised people found it so surprising.
Disappointing for the style of the stage she was on? Definitely.
Warranting of the hate messages and comments made? Not at all.
Heck, go listen to Mosh Pit by her and you can see it there too where she is attempting to merge trance and dubstep.
Frankly, Kristina Sky would have been a much better choice imho for the event, but that's just personal preferences. |

Haha - the Fei Fei dropping dubstep bit seems to have caught everyone off guard. We were battling the traffic and listening to her set on streaming but it seems that even Armin was surprised. I believe he even double checked with Ruben - "this is dubstep right? and then said we are currently a "state of dubstep". When she suddenly dropped a trance track (set seemed to be all over the place), my buddy went "I think Armin just threw a rock at her".
Her interview afterwards sounded as if it were a schoolgirl talking. Aside from dropping the "f-bomb", which I've never heard anyone ever say on ASOT, her comments could basically be summarized into " you I'm famous". |

I wanna hear that interview.
I'm friends with Fei Fei, so I'm going to be as impartial as I can be.
IMO, every DJ should understand their role. If she got booked for a trance event, which TBH, she's more known for Trance than Dubstep, she should've opened up with a proper set. Throwing a Dubstep song here and there is fine, but the making the majority of the set Dubstep is going to piss some people off. For example, if I was booked to warm up for Sasha or Digweed and opened up with some hip hop. Yeah, that's not gonna fly.
In this board we often give to openers for not doing a proper job, , I've gotten some heat my self. So I don't see how this is any different. After all, she was opening up on a trance stage. What's happening is that she's a friend to many of us here. Naturally a lot of us are going to jump in and defend her.
But technically speaking, she should've known her role. Friendship wise? I feel really bad for her. She's getting a lot and I hope she doesn't break down. It's very hard emotionally when people give you so much for doing something you really love. But us as DJ's are prone to public scrutinizing. It comes with the job. Perfect example is the beloved Unicorn Slayer. I know when I gotten before, there were times when I've just wanted to quit. So I hope she's not feeling like that and she's keeping her head up.

i think she's looking for the negative publicity.
she will be know as "the dj that said trance". and people may just love her for it.
like i said earlier... this could be the biggest dj career move or career blunder. |
