There have been studies done that correlate more northern climates with higher drinking rates while more moderate consumption happens closer to the equator. That could be why you see higher taxes and restricted drinking hours in places like Canada, England, Finland, Russia... |
Well we need some way of keeping warm here! |

That's cause drinking in the sun gets you way drunker way quicker, duh! :p
ps. It's usually not difficult to finds data related flaws in studies like that...anything within that realm of study is subject to a great deal of bias which more often than not produces spurious results. |

ok, If you know anyone from those countries, or have visited for any length of time, you can see a much more relaxed, moderate attitude towards alcohol in southern climates vs northern ones. Is my own observation more/less flawed than some study you've never seen but have already discredited?
Did you just say "spurious results"? |

1) I agree, we pay way to much for our booze, it should not be privatized.
2) What skipper says is true... spent only a few weeks in Europe this past summer. What I noticed, in Europe, everyone is drinking, but no one is really drunk. Here in North America, not everyone is drinking, they're all pretty much drunk. Well, everywhere I went besides England.
I think drinking should be a give and take ideal... let booze be bought in normal stores, let it be cheaper, let us drink in the streets or as a passenger in a car and at the age of 18, abolish last call. BUT you can make the laws regarding drinking abuse much harder, ie. zero tolerance on drinking and driving, harsher penalties for public drunkenness or any crimes/offences committed while drunk. |

Presentism (noun): the application of contemporary perspectives in explaining past events, rather than placing these events in their historical context. |
