So how did you get into this whole dance music thing? Leif's post in the choon of the moment thread got me thinking back to how I went from hating the stuff to loving it.

In high school I was listening to lots of stuff like Ministry and Nine Inch Nails. I loved the cold, hard sound, but hated "techno" with a passion. Then one night someone put on a rave here in Vermont. It was 1993, and held at the Old Red Lantern, a barn used for events (weddings, etc). The party was called Reverse, and the flyer was printed mirror image. I don't remember any of the DJs who played that night, but being in the feeling of the environment of the music totally changed my perception of it. From there I was buying compilations left and right, like Zoo Rave, Best of Techno, California Dreaming, etc. I was hooked for life.

Ok MTLTAs, who's next?

i used to be big into rock and 90's grunge music for quite some time. i spent 6 months in south east asia about 6 years ago and ended up living with a DJ who was in the scene there. every night was a party or after party where different people were spinning so that's how i got into that kind of music. i bought a very basic setup when i returned home and since then i haven't really listened to anything else.

Well EDM is pretty much all I ever listened to. I grew up in Israel and of course with the influences from Europe dance music was pretty big there in the 90's. I'd say I started in 93 when my dad gave me a top dance hits compilations and since then growing up I always got a lot of dance music compilations and albums and singles. In the late 90's my friends and I, who were about 10 at the time, used to organize parties a lot with different kinds of dance music. I even DJ'd a few times at a club that recently burned down called B-Side back in 99 (I was 12). In fact I did quite a bit of partying back around that time. When I came to Canada I had a hard time finding good music and was not really aware of any scene since I was still young so I started listening to some other stuff for a few years. Then in 2004 I went to Israel again and my friends made me listen to some newer music (mostly psy-trance) and I started getting back on track with EDM since then.

nice thread Witty!

I've always loved music, from the day my aunt got me a Columbia House subscription with the stamps that got me 25 free cds, anyone remember that? I noticed that I've gone through phases with music. My early years was mostly grunge, then in high school I got into hip hop. Cegep I jumped into hard rock and metal, then my good friend got me into jazz and trip hop, which was my first real introduction to EDM if you wanna call it that..

Then one day I was at a party up north in Tremblant when someone put one the brand new Justice album, and this track blew my mind.

Because I was familiar with rock music and still very much loved it, this was a common ground. I came home and started reading up on this kind of electro house music.. I went to HMV and bought Justice - Cross, MSTRKRFT - The Looks, and Digitalism - Idealism. Then I went to check out if these acts were coming to town, and what a ing coincidence. MSTRKRFT, Digitalism and Justice were ALL in town within a few weeks. I went to these parties at Metropolis and the SAT and had a ing blast. Lots of girls dancing everywhere, the music ended at 3am as opposed to rock concerts which ended at 11pm, we were drinking.. that cemented it.

I was part of that obnoxious hipster electro house crowd for a good year and a half going to all those parties, and I had some good times. Then I realized the crowd was getting younger and younger and I was already 22, I was getting bored of the music so I kinda got turned away. Then I got into Deadmau5 - Random Album Title and listened to progressive house for a while.. then jumped on the tech house bandwagon. Saw this great DJ at Piknic who turned out to be Joris Voorn and I never looked back.

I got into house music pretty late in life, nowadays it's all I listen to. Not that I don't enjoy other music, I'm just so consumed with digging for records cuz I started DJing, so I'm always listening. Thats my story, I'm putting on my flame suit lol

I was born in 1980. Early on, in the late 80's I started to like dance music. I remember listening to the Rap Traxx tapes and other compilations and really enjoying the beats.

I can clearly remember listening over and over to songs like this one. I was clearly attracted by the synth, the groove, bass etc.

I liked stuff like C&C music factory, Technotronic, the Black Box album. Lots of commercial dance .

I let go of the dance music to listen to Metallica for a few years and then moved on to hip hop.

Sometimes in the mid 90's though a friend gave me a Plastikman cassette that changed my life forever. It was the now legendary Sheet One LP. The acid beats were so amazing and different, I was becoming a closet techno and minimal lover.

When I started clubbing in the late 90's I got back into the dance music that was playing in clubs back then (mostly Eurodance). I lived in California for a year in 97 and that's where I was introduced to the raving scene in San Francisco. I listened to anything from Drum and bass to Happy hardcore. The candy raver years.

When I got back in Montreal, I went out to Playground and Sona. I didn't go that often back then but I was loving the music and since then I got more and more into the scene and refined my tastes for electronic music.

another good thread!

actually, i credit getting into dance music to Jesse (Jesteraver). Without him I wouldn't have been exposed to this sort of music (since I listened to Our Lady Peace, Nirvana, etc, rock music) and i wouldve not turned all my friends into dance music lovers

this started it for me:

followed by this:

then i turned 17 and this followed:

then this:

AND FINALLY

my first big party: Tiesto @ CEPSUM
then: Celebration (w/ Sneak, i forget who else lolol pills were strong back then)

Aria was extremely influential on my ears. I remember those days when BBB, Markus, Diggers would come by and my friends and I would all go out together and have a blast.

I was even there for that closing party when I think there were about 50 people on the dance floor. Sad for a place that saw better days...

i met the right people. and thank god i did.

march 2005, my boyfriend broke up with me after cheating on me for 3 months, left me for the other girl, terrible experience.

i was an extremely sheltered only child/adolescent and was always told that raves were bad, period. when i asked why, parents and relatives always said "the drugs". and that was that.

a girl i worked with at uniprix introduced me to a new guy, to help me get over my ex. his name was thomas, a croatian guy, and he introduced me to his friends. one of them, his name was nas. nas had an older brother who had been partying at stereo for a few years. one weekend, friday may 13th 2005 to be exact, nas' older brother invited us all out to party with him. i had an idea of what to expect (i'd been to sona once, red lite once and circus once before may of 2005)...but i was still scared less.

so it was fred everything playing that night...i walked into stereo and couldn't get over the venue and the sound...had my first proper roll, made some amazing friends, and that was that. the following weekend, frankie knuckles played and at that moment, i knew i was a complete convert to this underground scene...so, funky, chicago, even gospel house was really my first favourite genre...mark farina and frankie knuckles held #1 DJ spot in my heart for a while.

july 1st 2005, lawler at stereo. i cut in line (i was drunk) at stereo and these 4 guys said smthng about it. instead of arguing, we became friends and partied the entire night together. and i'm still close w/ all 4 of them...some used to post here but i doubt any of the new ppl know them...mitsutranza (nick), moevalith (moe), juan (forgot his username) and miguel, who now lives in barcelona and has releases on No.19.

lawler really changed things for me, he converted me to prog and darkness and dirt, pure and simple...i haven't looked back since.

being so sheltered growing up (9-10pm curfew at 16), i really didn't experience much that was considered "outside the box". to this day, i still say it...my parents' had some major issues going on in their marriage (which they worked out through the years, thank god) and if it wasn't for that distraction from my activities, i never would have been able to pull off going out every single weekend...for nearly 2 years, without them knowing about it...i had been living w/ my grandparents since i was 16 (cuz my parents needed to sort out)...i was 19 when i first step foot in stereo. i always told my family i was staying w/ friends over the weekend, simple. and they bought it, they trusted me.

then, in november 2006, maher and i started dating and he's opened up my musical tastes to genres i never would have discovered w/o a little push in the right direction ;)

and so 6.5 years later, here i am today...still loving (and loving to hate and hating to love) this demented scene...and all it offers. looking back, i wouldn't have changed a single thing. i really was re-born on that dancefloor so, thank you ((())), for helping mold who i am today <3

/emotionality hehehe :p
