He might as grab a Funktion One and a disco ball while he's at it. babysteps. :p

:stongue: Yeah, I don't know the guy that well.

Its funny now that you mention this, because it started off the same way for me. I initially bought the turntables and the mixer, to mix/scratch and play the records that I had. Didn't consider doing anything serious.

Actually I totally agree with the disco ball ... 20 inch ball by American DJ (and the motor), along with a pair of pinspot LED's to beam at it! People love it (more than the light effects) :tongue2

Only mobile djs would benefit from that kind of gear. I'm pretty sure most people doing it as a hobby that post on here would be playing only in clubs where they only provide the music and none of the gear (save for headphones and laptop/controller if applicable)

Funny how you assume the original poster is a guy.

Some of you guys are ridiculous. We all know whatever sounds good is the way to go, whether that be vinyl or digital.

Some of you guys think it's cheating if using the sync function on Traktor. It honestly saves a lot of time and I'm not ashamed to say that I do use it. You can draw the comparison to writing a story on pen and paper vs. using Microsoft Word with it's spell check, grammer check and auto formatting. You can create a great story using both methods but Word saves a lot of time by bypassing some things that can get done automatically. I don't hear anyone saying a person is cheating when they write a story using Word...so I don't agree that syncing is bad either. The real challenge these days as it's always been, is programming and track selection and that's only something the DJ has to know how to do, as Traktor, Serato or whatever cant help you.

No one on the dancefloor really cares what the DJ is using to spin. It's whatever gets the job done that makes them happy. I've created some crazy mixes just using plain ol' Traktor without anything else that honestly kills some other people's mixes when they're using more fancier stuff than mine.

Anyway these days I'm using a Vestax VCI-100, Traktor Scratch Pro and an Audio 4 external soundcard.

I'll probably get slated for my views but the bottom line is that many of you are forgetting that it's whatever sounds good can work.

The answer is no and neither should professional DJ's, be a professional. If you only want to play in your bedroom buy an all in one piece of junk numark and be a wannabe DJ behind closed doors but don't expect to be respected by the scene. If you want respect pay your dues properly, learn your craft with professional tools, not toys.

this is my beef with laptop djing, if used with a real live setup, like a live set using gear and other then laptop is ok. when used to press sync button on traktor then its ing bull imo. We are not playlists/jukeboxes, if you want to have a spot and play a gig then learn basics of djing.

Exactly.

Horrendous analogy.

you actually get paid slightly more in north america if you play vinyl. I believe its called a "vinyl fee" because of the cost of transporting records.

Really?

You're comparing apples and oranges there, just because they're both fruit doesn't mean they're the same. Just because DJs and bands play music, doesn't mean they're the same either.

---

Anyways, I have MASSIVE respect for people who still use vinyl. I think it's incredible to watch, especially knowing that they have no visual aids helping them along.

I have the Kontrol S4 myself because, financially it was the best way for me to go. I started off using the sync button just so I could have fun but eventually tought myself to mix without it, and yeah it's way more fun that way. I even practice with my monitor pushed down so I can mix without visual aids as well.

Anyways, all this laptop circlejerk hate is getting so old now. What matters most is what comes out of the speakers, not how it's done. That's my opinion at least.

Funny how thats true

mnemonic.
Just spend some time thinking about the workflow you want when playing and buy equipment to match. Adjust accordingly. Problem solved.

No, it's a correct analogy. You just fail to look at the big picture which is making the crowd move and instead are getting lost in the semantics of DJ'ing. And it's not like syncing is perfect either, I still find myself having to pitch bend to get the beatmatching exact.

Let's bring the analogy to movie editing. Am I going to go back to the 1930's or whatever and physically cut up the film reel and put it together...or am I going to take advantage of digital editing today? Again, both methods can produce a great film, the output will be the same, but one saves time over the other.
