That's because you're letting the algorithm do it and not beatgridding tracks yourself. FYI.

I know, and sometimes the algorithm is totally off as well. Sometimes I don't have time to grid it correctly myself so I just pitch bend. The point is, is that I do a bit of work trying to beatmatch it as the syncing function is not perfect either.

Anyways, I have MASSIVE respect for people who still use vinyl. I think it's incredible to watch, especially knowing that they have no visual aids helping them along.

I have the Kontrol S4 myself because, financially it was the best way for me to go. I started off using the sync button just so I could have fun but eventually tought myself to mix without it, and yeah it's way more fun that way. I even practice with my monitor pushed down so I can mix without visual aids as well.

Anyways, all this laptop circlejerk hate is getting so old now. What matters most is what comes out of the speakers, not how it's done. That's my opinion at least.

It's not really comparing apples to oranges at all, turntables to real DJ's is an instrument the same way a set of drums are to a drummer. If a professional drummer showed up to do his show with a device that would play his solo for him already in sync just by pressing a button he isn't a professional drummer.

Real artists do it manually, on the fly, mistakes or no mistakes. That's what separates talent that you should be paying for when you go out instead of a bunch of posers staring at their computer screens. Pure laptop dj's would mess up playing on CDJ's and be complete disasters trying to set a record down on Technic's platter because all they know how to do is click buttons that do everything for them. Where the is there talent in that?

Short answer, there isn't any.

Correct, and that's the way it should be. This is why a lot of people opt out for all in one DJ's with karaoke software at their weddings over real bands/artists. They are cheaper (and sound like it) but not the real thing.

If you have the disposable income pick up a pair of used CDJ800s and a Xone:32 or something similar. If it's not for you, you can resell it for the same price. If you like it, then you have a solid setup that won't cost you more than 1200$ or so.

As drawn out as this laptop DJ debate is, I still feel like people should learn without any aids such as the sync button or waveforms, because once you have those tools, you're much more inclined to use them and bypass the actual learning curve.

wow thanks for all the input; My purpose right now is to learn the basics first. Once I acquire the skill then I can decide whether I want to build on the hobby. I am definitely in no rush.

I am leaning towards Technics turntables. I saw a suggestion here for the 1200 model but there seems to be so many 'sub-types' - any further clarification in this area would be great. (I also see a few recommendations for the 1210 model)

Other than ebay, are there any other places that I can buy them used? What if I just want to rent turntables for the time being? Is that option available? Budget wise I'm looking at about $2k - $3k though of course I don't want to spend it all at once.

Is it then suffice to say that a basic set-up (ie without all the bells and whistles) will include 2 turntables and a mixer? With regards to headphones, what is the difference between a 'dj headphone' and a headphone. I have in my possession a BOSE headphone.. can I use that as a replacement?

Could you also name a couple of vinyl record stores in Toronto? I see some names on blogTO but I'm not sure if that's outdated.

Thanks for tuning in everyone!

I'm not a gear head but as far as I know, there isn't much difference between the sub-types of Technics 1200. They actually stopped making new 1200s so you're only bet to get your hands on them is a used pair through craigslist, ebay etc. You could also try posting on the "For Sale / Wanted" forum on TranceAddict to track down a pair. As far as I know, the 1210s are still in production so finding a new pair of them is possible.

The two main vinyl/gear stores in Toronto are Play De Record on Yonge (www.playderecord.com) and Moog Audio on Queen (www.moogaudio.com). They both rent out turntables but would be kind of steep in price if you're planning on having them around them around the house vs. renting them out to do a gig. Play De Record also sells used 1200s, but I'd recommend looking elsewhere because I was able to find a used pair $1000 a while back (they sell for $650/ea). Prices may have gone up since they were discontinued though as they are probably considered a collector's item now.

The basic setup of two turntables and a mixer will work for you if you have an amp and speakers or powered speakers without an amp. If you're already setup with speakers/amp then you'll easily be able to get two TTs and a mixer for less 2 grand.. maybe even less than $1500 if you get a good deal on the turntables. You should have no problems finding a basic mixer for less than $500. All you need is a 2 channel mixer with independent equalizers and a crossfader to start. The BOSE headphones should do you fine as long as they are the type that cover your whole ear.

Hope this helps!

Yeah, don't fall for the "ooh, they're so rare" wanks trying to sell their 1200s for $1500 for a pair - there are still thousands of them in circulation and you should be able to score a decent used set for $700 - $1000 on Craigslist or Kijiji. At the high end of that range, they should be in near mint condition and should definitely come with covers, cartridges and slipmats. The nice thing about Technics turntables is that they do tend to hold their value, so if you decide they're not for you, you should be able to unload them for close to what you paid for them.

There's not much difference between the 1200 and 1210 models, aside from colour and a few changes to the circuitry. Wikipedia pretty much explains it all here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technics_SL-1200

Tonnes of mixers under $500 to choose from, and while I know the haters will naysay, Allen & Heath's Xone:32 is a great piece of kit to start with. Simple interface, solid build, sounds great and has built-in filters, so you'll get at least a basic understanding of how to work with effects.

Used records...depends on what kind of music you plan on playing. Personally, I find Toronto stores to be a bit of a wasteland when it comes to vinyl, as it's no longer much of a priority for retailers in this city. Best alternate option is to set yourself up with an account on Discogs, create a wantlist, and buy from reputable sellers with reasonable shipping rates. I purchase what are often hard to source tracks regularly from both the U.S. and Europe, and on average pay from $8-$12 per 12", shipped - not much different from in-store rates here. You can also check Craigslist and Kijiji for DJs clearing out their collections - on more than a few occasions, I've walked away with a bag full of absolute gems for anywhere from $1-$5/record.

...and you can hit me up for lessons after you're all set up - I've been exclusively vinyl for nearly 30 years and teach skills that go well beyond basics like beatmatching. :)
