Ok, so I've decoded many subtle texts that I often here in social discourse.
"No" actually means "yes"
"I have a boyfriend" means "I'm playing hard to get, so go ahead and stalk me"
"I'm putting a restraining order on you" means that she's playing REALLY hard to get, and I'm that close to making our relationship official.
I can't decode "I'm not relgious, I'm spiritual." What the f-word does that mean? |

| It means that the person saying it is a pretentious new age ass, and that they are trying to hide it behind what they think is a more respectable word. |

Usually said by someone who is transitioning from being religious to agnostic, and then probably eventually atheist.
(I used to say "I'm not religious, but I'm spiritual" when I was in college) |

Someone who doesn't want to tie their beliefs down to any particular organised religion or pre-existing belief system. Not hard to grasp, and no real need to get hostile about it.
And I am not remotely spiritual, before you ask. |

people making money off homeopathy and "being psychic" is a reason to get hostile
but I guess it's just me who instantly thinks of that and astrology when I hear "spiritual". I understand there is a lot more to the word than what my first thoughts are. |

| I appreciate there are many people who mean "I believe in nonsensical new age " when they say it, but those people are subordinate - there are also many people who don't mean that. |

| It means your girlfriend will have sex with you before you get married, but she won't do anal. |

It probably means nothing. The person saying it doesn't even know what it means, in my experience, but they spew it in an effort to sound "deep" and self-aware.
Others say it to defend their belief in god and the supernatural but not organized religion.
They should just say "I'm a Deist, not a Theist". |

| It means that they don't identify with any particular religion, but they wish to emphasize that they nevertheless do not subscribe to the practice of forming beliefs based on reason. |
