I plan on working a lame, soul draining 9-5 but when I come home i'll be making music as one of my many side hobbies.
I plan on releasing self released 12"s eventually. EDM (I don't really like saying this a genre because the ethos of techno artists are different from brostep artists, to me it's like saying that the "guitar music" is a genre) is a niche genre filled with more niches within niches, and that's why I expect to lose money in the process. I just want people to focus on music, If I have something worth releasing I'll do it. To me there was nothing cooler than going to a record store, getting a mysterious white label of an artist who you either don't know of or refused to put their name on their records. That's why I want to target the people who still buy vinyl.
In the end I don't think I'll be disappointed since I have surpassed my primary expectations already. Anything else is a welcome bonus. This is kind of premature though because pressing vinyl is expensive lol. |

Eh. I'm 20, been at it since I was 15, and I've never had any sort of ambition. It's a hobby with a massive learning curve and I don't put the sort of time into it to get anything back.
That said I really, really take pride in my music. I've been doing this for a relatively short amount of time, spent over 3 years with so little technical experience that I had absolutely no clue how to use a simple compressor, and yet my music sounds pretty good to me. I'm actually happy with what I make and my overall style. How many people can say confidently say that about their own music?
As nice as it is that the end result of about 40-50 hours of work gets the attention of about 100 people at a time, and a couple of them even take the time to give me feedback.. I dunno. The feedback is almost always really positive and yet my music gets so little attention, I sometimes feel like more people could enjoy what I make if I had any way of getting noticed. I just don't have the time or energy to create a network of people who care about what I churn out, and because of that it's easy to feel like I'm not doing anything right, or even if I am it must not be anything worth paying attention to.
But I'm still new to this, and I legitimately enjoy the music I make and the process behind it, so whatever. It makes it worth putting up with the frustration of nobody else really giving a about the one thing I'm really passionate about. At least, that's the case most of the time.. |
Promo section along with SC are both internet circle jerks. |

Music like most things is a pyramid. 1% get's 99% of the fans, press, money, ect. That is why I think it is pointless to aim for anything other than the top. Otherwise there is no money to be made, no fans to be had, no feedback you will be given, ect.
It is absolutely pointless in my mind to make music that no one (or even just 1000 people) listen to and then it ends up in the great internet glut of noise forever where it will sit never being discovered or enjoyed by virtually anyone (like soundcloud or youtube). |

It's still a way to direct people to your music.. but, that's what I'm saying, I have no clue how the hell to get my music out there. As far as I know nobody really cares when I release a new track, it goes largely unnoticed by all but a very small number of people.
I don't know. The best I can hope for is to establish a connection with other artists by actively seeking out their music, listening to it, commenting, and hoping they'd do the same for me. I just don't have the time for it, really. And labels don't want anything to do with me.
I know it's my fault on some level, but I really just don't understand how to get a decent sized audience. Musicians far better than myself have said great things about my music, so I must be doing something right. Promotion, though, I wouldn't even know where to start |

You might want to not produce trance then if you want to make it to the top. House and dubstep are on the rise. |

There is two different issues which you may have to consider:
1) you may never going to have huge fan base group of people just because of the type of music you produce or quality of it.
2) you may never going to have huge fan base group of people just because they don't know anything about you.
And from my perspective you have to take care of point #1 and I will try to help you with point #2 and on top of that you will receive a fair pay for your fair effort.
This is how I can see it!
Cheers,

Does this service you've been talking about do anything to help somewhat talented nobodies like myself?
like, those of us who don't already have the 1,000 people supporting them, like you mentioned in that other thread. I'd kill to have that many fans, haha |

I produce most styles. I don't produce dubstep (it won't even be around when I get some exposure anyway) but I do some Avicii style 'House', Trance, Techno, progressive house, ect. |

EDM for me is just a hobby. I don't have delusion of grandeur about ever doing well at it or making an obscene amount of money from it but I wouldn't be too upset if it somehow happened.
I've been lucky in that I've worked in some top studios with serious talent and don't get me wrong it was ing great, but honestly the hours were soul destroying, and when it was a job, the fun parts started getting outweighed by the chore parts, to the point, I stopped seeing any magic due to the day to day grind. When you start taking something like that for granted, it's time to change as it's not right for you.
I still like to keep my hands in it, and DJ'ing every so often is a good laugh, but I just could never do the guetta/shm/ec fistpumping and faux knob twiddling while dressing like an absolute which is required these days to make the serious money in the DJ field.
As for production, I'd love to have a little earning off productions, just to know that I made something and people bought it, and then do something enjoyable with the money.
So for now, I'm happy to own a non music related business, do well from that, and spend a little time here and there noodling with logic for fun at home or doing the occasional project with other bands/artists or the odd remix. |

Lol, lets start with this, you are not "nobodies" lol, you are simply unheard of or unknown on the market and when people will come across your name, some or even most of them may like you and buy your product/track and this is what the whole thing should be about, like a "hub" for producers (no details lol) - do you get this idea?
Sound cool and interesting but a lot of logistics still need to be figure out.
Cheers guys,

It's the whole getting people to come across my name thing that I don't get. Soundcloud and beatport give me the same exact opportunity you described.
But you're not giving details so I can't speak like I know anything about it. hope it works out for you. |
