i'd also like to point out that deadmau5 IS NOT A DJ. he is a performer, he gives a concert, not a dj set.
as much as i dislike his sound, he has re-defined a lot of things associated with the EDM scene. his production value is top notch, he is a geek, and he knows it. he basks in it even.
he sells out stadiums, not clubs. legendary status? absolutely. people will remember him in 10-15 years. for me, if you're doing this for 15+ years, that's pretty legendary.
i'd also like to point out that he NEVER SOLD HIS SOUL. he has always been into this, it is nothing new. when everyone ranted on him, did he change? no. he said you all, i'm doing what i want, and guess what? y'all are jealz cuz it's ing profitable.
cant believe i'm defending the guy when years ago i got into a fight on these boards with him.
my friends that i went to wmc with this year are hardcore deadmau5/skrillex/zedd/kill the noise fans. they love the music i love too, they just prefer what they prefer.
they have educated me about these above mentioned artists. i went with them to the skrillex show last thursday at the raleigh hotel. yes, me. i actually went. i lasted about 2 hours but it was a ing great time nonetheless. deadmau5 was at the show as well, having a grand old time.
anyways...did he sell out? hell no. he intelligently built on something he saw blowing up. it took me years to admit it, but i finally am. name me 3 other performers (NOT DJS) that are doing what he does...on level that he is doing it...with the same magnitude too? not a single one. |
Productions.. you talking about his tracks or the production of his shows? The latter has much ado about the team, not him.
I still think his status was from obvious talent with productions but also touring with Tommy Lee, having a Daft Punk remix blow up commercially, wearing a catchy red mouse head and equally catchy moniker for branding, pumping out a sound that is "easy to get" for the young folks just getting into edm, using and being a byproduct of social media like Facebook and Youtube, Myspace, file sharing, webboards, the whole internet, basically.
He is also part of the mtv generation which, sadly, is very much about gimmicks (see: mousehead) and edgy personnas, etc. The internet, and all aspects of it has allowed him to become global as well.. I don't think he would have had this much success in infancy era of the internet - the Moby/Sasha & Digweed/Daft Punk era where all of the above was not as prevalent as it is today, IMO |

with all due respect i have my issues with the guy from the past, but he has a good point, with someone as Big as Madonna pushing MOLY aka MDMA to kids all it does is give a bad image to dance music. it automatically associates the drug with this genre of music. really simple .... |
thats exactly what i thought. |

| I personally think his success reflects more on audiences today rather than his talents. One only has to look at the success of Jersey Shore to see the state society is in today :p |

Acutally no I haven't. I tend to focus on my own life rather than sit there judging people's hard work. I guess it's kinda hard to understand. I don't blame you. |
so what you're saying is that you have no opinion ... on anything?
they don't teach critical thinking in school any more? |

congratulations on basing your credentials on other people's achievements. |
credentials? all i'm saying is that when you've been listening to electric music for as long as i have...i can spot the trends, the sampling, and if a record is or not.
like right now? its the 90's all over again except much slower and more disco sampling.
most house is absolute right now, or recycled ideas. see for instance: soul clap. |

| wether or not a work is interesting and has a well developed concept has nothing to do with wether you like it or not, plain and simple. |

one can discuss (praise and criticize) the artistic merits of any work of art without having to achieve a comparable level of proficiency in said art
it's like saying you can't rant about a ford focus because you haven't built a car yourself. c'mon, son. |
+50, he's right mike.
just because ive never mixed 2 tracks together flawlessly means i can't judge a good dj from a bad one? please. |
