Will gay marriage determine the presidency? (pg. 2)

A couple reasons:
(1) The number of electors given to a state is not exactly proportional to the state's population, since in addition to the electors that correspond to the state's House representatives (which are apportioned by population), every state has two senators and gets one elector for each, regardless of population. This means that less populated states have a larger effect on the electoral tally than they would in a strictly proportional system.
(2) If a candidate receives a plurality of the popular vote in an individual state, the candidate then receives all of the state's electoral votes. Even if, say, only 51% of a state voted for a candidate, that candidate will get 100% of the electoral votes for that state. Electors are a "winner take all" system, not a proportional representation of the popular vote.
So obviously there can be a discrepancy between the popular vote and the electoral one. |
I forgot to add that this is why many Americans stay home on election day, since if you are a Democrat in a typically "Republican state" (or vice versa), your vote is rendered null once all your state's electors go to the candidate from the other party. |

There wasn't a single Republican candidate that could challenge Obama in this election cycle. Santorum, Gingrich, Mr. Godfather Pizza, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney. They all wasted their time. Anyone who is looking to vote for their values should definitely be able to see that Mitt Romney is only saying what his advisers tell him he should say to gain support.
Ron Paul vs Obama would be an excellent debate, but nobody would vote for Ron Paul except reddit. |

God, I hate television / U.S. media. The media is so good at producing nationwide hysteria that people hardly seem to notice just how much they're being manipulated.
Hey everyone, lets all think and talk about 'X' because there aren't much more pressing national and global affairs that we should all be much more concerned with ... oh wait, yes there are.:o |

You don't think this is a fairly immense civil rights issue? |

| I don't know about the election but gay marriage has almost no impact on my erection. |

This would have an effect all around the world, and let's not forget homosexuals have an even rougher time in Africa. I, for one, welcome our new homo accepting overlords, because it's going to have a direct impact in our government (reminder: I'm in South America) which is slowly becoming a bizarre theocracy (reminder: I'm not in the American South).
Also, isn't there a chance North Carolina ushered Obama into this more vocal stance towards gay marriage? Some people say it was a premeditated move for the elections, but I wonder whether he'd have come forth with a polemic move like this had North Carolina not been so backwards. |

| I know! It's like, if you institutionalize things like free speech, people will only use it to say idiotic things. Right? |
