I can understand the point to a certain extent, but let's not fool ourselves thinking that Europe is some distant paradise far far away. It's 7 hours away. Plane tickets vary anywhere from $300-$700. Expensive, yes. But not impossibly expensive. But I would still do 1 festival in Europe over every festival in US. Quality over quantity.

But you can do a festival in Europe with only 1-2 days off from work, so that's not really a valid excuse. But even if you add the plane ticket to your europe-excursion-itinerary, it wouldn't be more expensive to go to Coachella from, let's say, New York than from New York to Frankfurt with everything added up.

$300? Lol, Ryan Air does not exist in America. $600-$700 minimum, let's be serious.

and 1-2 days off of work? Leave on Thursday/Friday, return on Sunday? Why would anyone do that? You're not really thinking this one through.

$600-$700 minimun? Funny, because I just flew to Finland from New York for $410 via Icelandair. Last year my flights were $380. So yes, let's be serious.

And why wouldn't people leave on friday morning, come back monday evening, is that really so hard to believe? It's only a 7 hour flight. You take the whole week off every time you fly from east coast to west coast?

Point being: Going to a festival in Europe is not different than going to a festival in West Coast.

huh, wow. Finland is surprisingly cheap. Unfortunately Finland is not really where I want to go but maybe if I keep arguing with you you'll find me a cheap flight to Barcelona? :D Your price estimate is really not standard for most major cities in Europe, but I'm not trying to get into a epic debate over this.

Sorry, I thought we were talking about Europe in general, not just the most expensive cities in there. I guess you can base your argument on both sides. Cheapest, more expensive and vice versa. But anyhoo, I think you're smart enough to see my point.

And trust me, Finland is not cheap compared to the rest of Europe. Of course you can take Ryanair for 10 euros from Finland, but.. Let's not go there.

Spain is expensive to travel from USA, but Berlin on the other hand is not. But you're right, I think we both have a case here.

EarnYourKeep, I think it's ridiculous that just because you don't like the festivals in NY, you think they shouldn't exist. Plenty of people DO like the festivals here.

i think it's ridiculous how everyone defends the out of it when someone objects or has a different view on it.

we have threads that start up 5 months out with people posting full of anticipation, large debates, meet ups, and as we get closer to the event, ultimately you see people selling tickets

is there nothing obvious to you about how wrong this is? morally or not?

Just came back from my forth trip to Ibiza and I found flights cheaper than I ever had, $875 round trip to Madrid which was unusually low. The normal is $1200 - $1500. Because spanair is gone I had to use easyjet to finish getting to Ibiza.

Lets not make it too easy sounding, there is a reason you primarily see British, Greek, Irish, and Italian visitors in Ibiza..... its much easy for them to get on a direct flight for 200 euro or less round trip than the at least one connection Americans have to do with horrible connecting flight times to get home.

I am coming out to just see PVD on the closing party this year and I leave Wednesday night at 5pm. Land at 8am Thursday in Madrid. Fly Madrid to Ibiza at 1pm, land at 3:30pm then Friday morning I cannot make a 1:30am flight (for obvious i will still be at the show reasons) to get to Madrid in time for a 9am flight home so I will have to wait till Saturday to fly Madrid to Charlotte since the next flight Madrid lands at 9:55am. Its much harder than you make it seem. Wednesday - Saturday just to be in Ibiza for 1 night of parties.

If I lived anywhere with a direct to Ibiza I would be there 2, 3, 4, or even 5 times a season.

That all being said, aside from EZOO, the EDM scene in NY isn't that bad, be glad you dont like in a sub-tier market. Lets see what ID&T brings to the table with sensation and hey, NY gets good New years lineups where as Ibiza gets none :)

Madrid, Barcelona, Rome, Venice.. All very expensive from United States. Berlin, Helsinki, Stockholm, Reykjavik, Frankfurt and even Milano are cheaper. Guess the volume is a bit lower. But anyway, there are expensive and less expensive flights out there and I do agree that Madrid and Barcelona are impossible to find under $600.

The scene in New York is decent, not by any means great. Though haven't been into clubs here for a good 6-7 months. Guess I kind of fed up to the scene a bit. The thing is that I really hate the "rager kids" who goes to the festivals here in US and that really bums me out. ing buzzkill. Obnoxious little brats.

Not saying Europe is superior by any means.. Just wanted to point out that on some occasions it's not that much more expensive to go there than, say, to west coast.

Good post.

But yeah, I will agree with you on the last bit. I just moved to NYC from Pittsburgh and compared to the Burgh...the NYC scene is awesome. Hell, you're talking about one of the best EDM scenes in the country if not the world...let's not get carried away here.

All there is in Pittsburgh are little rinky dink club nights where there are probably 100+ people max (if that) or "massives" staged 30-45 minutes outside of the city or in West Virginia :( or Ohio that have a bunch of no-names and are seldom attended by anyone over the age of 23. I just came back from there to housesit for my family in Pittsburgh and flipped through the city paper. The only DJs and producers coming through here in the next four months are DJ Pauly D :/, Thomas Gold, and Pretty Lights. The new techno club Static that opened up last year already seems to running on empty and clueless as to who to book in the area.

Identity Festival came to Pittsburgh last year and completely skipped it over this year. What does that say?

If you live in the Northeast US...New York is pretty much where all the EDM events are happening at. To put things in a reasonable perspective.

But yeah, for the most part EDM festivals in America have come up...and for those who don't really have the money or the time to go across the pond it's good. Thanks to this thread though, I'm definetely going to try to look into travel and flight options for next year.
