Mad love and props to the promoters that keep the scene alive as much as possible here. But with all due respect, I don't see anyone endeavoring to look outside the box and really put this city on the map. Instead, these money-hungry promoters (i.e. madeevents, massive) jumped on the vision which one promoter had in mind to make that happen and succeeded just bc of experience; I'm speaking about Minimoo here and this city's much anticipated first electronic festival, Minitek.

Yes, it was poorly organized or how they justified it 'miscommunication with all services'. Regardless, whatever the outcome, I was one happy camper bc finally someone grew the balls and give this city what it had been lacking for years- crazy how such a disaster holds a fond memory that will forever be stapled within. I remember quiet vividly how one of the stages was like 5hrs late being set up lol pushing back set times, thus, squeezing them to play b2b but making it all up to everyone by the killer sets they provided...

Okay, I'm drifting away, so back to the point..after that labor weekend in '08, I was hoping these pro-underground-promoters-turned-festival-amateurs would learn from their mistakes and do it proper the following year but, sadly, it never happened- I don't really know what happened thereafter but that's when I felt this city lost a pioneer which took a path, never taken before, leading to the likes of Europe. I suppose that's when ezoo realized there was money to be made here, took the same path but just in the other direction.

I remember how we all wanted electronic music to rise in fathom and now that it did, it backfired on us bc it's not how we envisioned it.

In conclusion, here I present a fav personal quote embedding the purpose of this post, ”I don't care if I fall as long as someone else picks up my gun and keeps shooting.” Che Guevara.

Ps. Detroit Festival is/was considered the number 1 festival in the world, by magazines, and I could see why. Bc it was about the music, although, that's beginning to crumble and why? Bc it's forgetting it's roots.

i find that quite a shock honestly. Ive heard nothing but great things about DEMF, however id put time warp up against DEMF any day of the week! tough to compare however when DEMF is 3 days and time warp is a 19 hour marathon but ill take the grit and grime of partying in a monstrous airplane hanger and relentless german techno festival marathon hands down. not too mention, EVERY time warp every year has sven vath play for 4 hours and richie hawtin close out main stage from 8am-2pm!!! that alone takes the cake for me. not too mention the other jaw dropping DJs packed into this one night of mayhem.

ive never been to either, but time warp trumps my decision on which one im hitting first. hopefully next year for this also.

Hi, i'm from Belgium living actually in nyc, seriously i like the festivals here and don't see any difference, Maybe you like european festival because it's more exotic like every Europeans would love US festivals ...
It's true that festivals are cheaper in Europe but the salaries are way lower there also, it's just a purchasing power thing ...
Grass is always greener ?
And don't forget that 99% of the best festivals in Europe (and Ibiza) take place between June and september, in the US, I like the fact that festivals are spread out during the year (and yes doing UMF during winter is greaat ! ).

Well, I shouldn't say crumble, just yet. I couldn't agree more about how great Detroit was, especially the second time around, last year. But I only said that bc upon waiting at the airport to head back home I read an article about how the organize for Movement is planning to expand the location (construction has already begun) to accommodate the big name acts such as shrillex, mau5 and whatever other crap DJ that doesn't even fit the bill. So that right there made me lose ALL credibility and respect, if it really happens. The day that line-up gets announced for next year shall be the day Underground Renaissance and Richie gets the finger and everything they've built, pretty much.

Djmanu, thanks for sharing your .02 on this topic. Interesting to hear the point of view from the other side. But I'm really curious, do you believe the line-ups, ambiance, environment, (girls? Lol), quality of music, the festival overall, to be better here?

edit: earnyourkeep, true. that flew right over me, I stand corrected.

This is pretty accurate. Although you guys do have more "underground" festivals like Awakenings and the like. Also, the crowds in European festivals are much more diverse and knowledgeable. There are A LOT of kiddies at our festivals and generally a higher concentration of cheesy DJs.

Sigh...I'm going to have to agree with you on this.

I've been to DEMF from 2008-2010. It's definetely changing...\

A prime example of DEMF moving away from it's roots is all of the hyped up acts in the Red Bull tent and the Detroit Underground stage featuring big name acts...whereas that was only really reserved for locals. it's still the best EDM/electronic music festival in the country especially when it comes to price. $75 for a 3 day pass? That's just not happening at any other festival in the US...most times 3 day passes are atleast $150 and at most $300+

Never been to timewarp...but I've seen videos of it and it looks epic.
