Well-regarded movies you can't get into (pg. 9)

Anything with Drew Barrymore, Angelina Jolie and almost anything with Tom Cruise (he's had some good flicks).

I'd say Julia Roberts as well, but shes actually a good actor despite her having a baboon mouth.

:stongue: I've never heard her described that way. I've always thought of her as Mick Jagger's illegitimate child.

Yeah, Angelina is a pretty terrible actress, lol. And Julia Roberts. I just don't like anything she's been in. Ever, I think.

Drew Barrymore... well, I'm a sucker for 50 First Dates :o

No, but really. What were her outstanding roles, in your eyes? Girl: Interrupted was pretty good, I won't lie, but what else? Maybe there are some movies I haven't seen, that she was awesome in.

"Changeling" was absolutely brilliant. She got nominated for that role for best actress if that means anything. I thought she was outstanding in it.
Beyond Borders, as well. Great movie (with the beautiful Clive Owen).. they actually shot part of the movie in the hotel I used to work at. I tried my best not to hyperventilate. :D

PS: I still hate you.

Fair enough, I've not seen either of those :o

The 'nominated for best actress' thing doesn't do it for me, as there have been some absolutely horrendous nominees over the years. The Academy Awards thing is a huge wanking-muppet-fest, IMO.

I'll make a point to check those movies out, but your street-cred is riding on this, Selma. If those movies are , then I won't let you forget it :p

Well that's the point. Driver is a guy who wants to be a real hero, the one from the movies, and he gets the looks right, but he's ed up on the inside. In other words, he's all style and zero/disturbing content.

This doesn't make any sense. What he's like "on the inside" is his content. You're trying to have your cake and eat it. The vacuous style of the film is not some reflection of the nature of the protagonist.

If you make a film with pretty cinematography, a rich soundtrack and lots of very slow, minimalist shots and scenes, it automatically acquires a veneer of artiness that compels people to scramble to take it more seriously. If you took the exact same script, line for line, but shot it in a more conventional style, nobody would give a about the resulting film. It would be one of dozens of passable crime thrillers released every year. Which is fine if you get on board with the atmosphere of the film, but in this case the neon '80s feel did nothing for me, and I was left with little else to chew on.

By the way, although I knocked Hayao Miyazaki a few posts above, I just want to reiterate Grave of the Fireflies (by Studio Ghibli) is bloody awesome. And depressing.

Don't watch it with your significant other on Valentine's Day. Trust me on this one :p :(

I honestly didn't mind her in Hook.
