Unfortunately we're made to care. Some fans care too much, but regardless, there IS a connection with quality and frequency of bookings and the number we landed on in DJ Mag.
Like a few people have mentioned, the Gareth Emerys and Hardwells get the high quality, high volume NYC/LA/Miami gigs, 3-5 times a year.
In most cases (not all), if you make the Top 100, you enter a territory in which your managers can get you $10,000+ per gig, and not $800 anymore. Obviously guys like Sasha or Sven Vath are exempt form this type of thing, really, but the young'ns like myself are kind of hanging on for dear life, whereas entrance into the Top 100 means you've "made it" and can enjoy a full-time musical career on top of a financially comfortable lifestyle. You're not really a "starving artist" anymore. Obviously, not everyone outside of the Top 100 is a "starving artist", but a lot are.
It's easy to write it off; I think it's as un-legit as the next guy. But, the impact it has on the profession is unfortunately way more profound than you can imagine. |
I've mentioned that :) I was referring to "us" as fans and gave credit to DJ's whose career is affected:

Zack and Ramsau: solid points, completely agree.
That being said: why do any of "us" care? Its the same , different year. None of "us" fans should really give two s about where our favorites ended up. Perhaps the DJ's may care, particularly the bigger names, as this poll may have an impact on their money in an indirect (direct?) way.
But, how does this affect us in any way? Is anyone here really going to stop seeing Sasha or Hernan because they are out of the Top 100? Hell no. If one is upset, then it is simply a sign of of pride: we just wanna see our guys/girls name up there, but in the end, it doesn't really matter. Like Ramsau said, as fan, we are probably better off NOT having our guys in the Top 10.
Annually, the most senseless conversation ever. Moving on. |

i kinda don't agree with people who say his crowd likes the pop music he plays. if you guys follow some topic on internet forums when armin has a live gig going on, they love hearing dash berling cheese, but once he starts bringing in 140bpm, they love it even more. he can play 140bpm from start to finish and he wouldn't loose any fans at all. people will still continue listening to him, and perhaps, while he still has the same crowd listening to him, he would gain the attention of older trance fans like; aystar, a.l.d.i, and on. no matter what armin plays, his crowd will be there. so there is no need for him to play that cheesy . |
exactly, i hate to say it but alot of his new generation of fans are pretty much sheep. they listen to what he says and plays and eat it all up. clueless and uneducated for the most part
so if armin has his show called "a state of trance" and plays trouse, pop, same generic sound etc etc they will follow along and believe what he is saying since he is the number 1 dj
if he were to actually play real trance music and bring the sound back, yea there would still be a noob crowd but atleast it wouldnt be as bad music wise and he would gain respect back from alot of people |

I'm going to make a wild presumption here that we have all (at least to some extent) been "that person". Of course, I can't speak for everybody and all people are brought to the scene differently, but I do remember when I started going to parties almost every weekend in the beginning of 00's and the music I loved (well, still do) were still heavily fround upon by the older "scenesters" and how everything was so different in the early 90's.
With the exception that I sincerely believe that mainstream trance was hell of a lot better in the 00's than it is now so I can't compare these two eras completely.
But, that said, I don't think that's the problem. I have made few friends here in the States who listen to electronic music and what they listen haven't changed at all during the few years I've known them. At. All. It's still the same idolization for the same DJMAG top 10 DJs and still listening that damn boring pop from the TOP40 list.
When it comes to that sheeple that you are talking about, I believe this was exactly what you meant.
At least within the first couple of years I tried to educate myself with older stuff and tried to understand why and how we are at this point musically.
I think it's safe to make a determination that some exclusions apply and I respect people (new or old) who can listen good music, no matter the genre or style, and the priority is not on "raging" or "rolling".
But in the end, I believe it just comes down to a fact that even though I started listening to "mainstream trance" in the early '00s it wasn't considered as mainstream to anyone else than for the people who were inside the scene.
I guess the comparison between '90 and '00 is different than '00 and '12 because the gap within the scene is too damn high. |

thats a good point
i get what your saying. as for when we were younger we were fround upon i wont argue, but back then i think if you showed up to a party and behaved maturely, danced, listened to the music it was all good.
today's new generation of neon kids are not like that at all
back then between the 90's and early 00's the music/scene was still alive and kinda fresh. todays difference is that its over commercialized in some area's as opposed to 10 years ago.
10 years ago it was so hard to get good dj sets/track id's cause no one had a radio show really. maybe once a month say digweed would have one of his sets recorded and from there it would still take a while to find out what it was he was playing. today everyone and their mother has a radio show. it's like some of the excitement/suspense isent there anymore. same goes with dj sets
the top guys out there now HA HA there is no more musical journey. they put no effort into their sets but yet they are the top "dj's" of the world?
i think next year dj mag should have dj's vote instead of fans
i bet you the poll would be alot dif |

It's sad, but Armin is a slave to his own Armada management, he pretty much has no choice but to play the latest W&W tracks and other crappy trouse tracks from the Armada label. Anyway W&W are pretty high up in the poll now, I think they can sustain their sound now without Armin's support. Thank God for labels like Subculture and Future Sound of Egypt saving Armin's ass. Anyway he really neeeds to do his own thing. Combine his latest warm up set from Ibiza with his green stage set from ASOT 550 Den Bosch, I'll have no problem considering him #1
He's playing Guy J and Chris Liebing tracks in this warmup

And I'll just leave this here

Maybe everyone can email him the above interview |

It cannot be true. Is really difficult for me to believe that Avb would be playing ala nick warren. That Luiz B track is beyond sexy
Dope set! |

All his warmup sets are awesome, top-notch sets, you should check all of them out; there's a lot of them to be found from the past year or so.
Unfortunately, that link explains it all. The set's been up for 28 days and has less than 400 downloads. Sets like this don't make the rounds around the scene. Even "Armin fans" aren't going crazy over it. |

Mind = blown, this is a really really good mix.
Kinda shows you how DJs dont really play what they really want, but what the management/sponsors want them to play. |

Here is another dope set of Armin's from this year's global gathering.

Or maybe what they think the crowd will actually like? Sets like this maybe are meant for the fans who've been with him for awhile and the live sets in front of the crowd are for the new generation... who knows. |
