I was watching a BBC film called Before Big Bang. The mainstream theory now is: Big Bang created our universe but didn't create the beginning.
In other words, there are multiple universes or we are consequence of a previous major event that created the Big Bang. It's getting more and more complex, and i'm starting to think we will never answer to that question.

I'm find conformal cyclic cosmology to be an amazing theory, this was probably mentioned in the documentary you mentioned. |
