I want to learn EDM! Please help!

Hey guys, I don't frequent this site but I figured maybe you guys could help. Background: I started my own mobile DJ business out of high school and I do it on the side..however, I am more like a jukebox than a DJ.

I went to a Steve Aoki show recently and it was my first EDM show. I loved it! It has inspired me to want to learn how to produce electronic music.

So my question is, where do I start and what do I need? I'm not looking to buy a 1200 dollar board just yet, but I understand I do need something to work with.

Also, are mixing and producing intertwined, not alike, or is it necessary to know both? If so, where do I start?

I'm a fairly intelligent guy and I'd like to learn the ins and outs of this, including technical knowledge (what is compression, bit rate, all that stuff). Now I've seen plenty of sites out there that would be happy to take my money to teach me to "Be a DJ in 1 month!!!" but I'm looking for something more official...or should I teach myself? What hardware and software do I need and how do I learn the basics.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!

You are not prepared to hear what people on here are about to say to you....

...Maybe not, but I try to ignore the dick heads who insist on tearing people down just because they have knowledge on something others don't.

I'm completely ignorant on the subject, I know...I just wanted some help figuring out where to start. What, are people going to tell me how stupid I am, or how Steve Aoki sucks or something? Whatever. I can handle some elitists, I'm just looking for some help.

How the is someone interested in something without spending some effort at it before asking random dudes on a forum.

3/10 troll reward, since jimmies were semi-rustled.

Thanks for asking.

I have spent some time looking into it, but what I keep finding is a bunch of youtube videos that don't I don't understand, a bunch of sites that want me to pay for some (most likely) ty class. I'm asking where do I start? What do I need to buy, and how can I learn?

I'm interested in it..I didn't say I was an expert.

I don't understand why you're giving this guy a hard time.

To answer your question as best as I can, check out the production forum. I think there is a lot of knowledge there, not so sure about the activity though.

Ok. I knew Ableton was the most popular program from looking around. Is there any specific way to learn how to use it, or is it kind of just trial and error / youtube videos lol
