Oh, I'd contribute to this thread, but nearly all my music consumption this past year has been older material. I've bought less than half-a-dozen 2012 releases.

Slightly different. AraabMUZIK made an instrumental hip-hop record by timestretching loads of cheesy trance. All the people who turn their noses up at the very word "trance" went nuts. This still makes me pretty angry, partly because it shows the preference and dismissal a lot of people display towards genres depends largely on who's talking about the music, partly because the result of that is a lot of perfectly good trance music being ignored (thus keeping the genre in the firm grip of morons) and partly because the AraabMUZIK album is so ty.
I actually had this conversation with a girl I was seeing who kept playing tracks from that album:
Me: "I really don't get why you like this stuff, given it's just a bunch of timestretched Above & Beyond tracks you wouldn't touch with a barge pole."
Her: "Yeah, but I don't know where the sample's come from, I just like it."
Me: "Okay, but if you somehow ended up in Digital Society and one of those god-awful trance tracks he sampled was played, would you enjoy it?"
Her: "I probably would, because I'd be like 'Hey - it's AraabMUZIK!'"
Me (in despair): "Oh God, that's such a circular argument."
Her (cheerfully): "Yes it is. Would you like to go around again?"

Also, since we're on the subject of repressed trance-love, listen out for the sample in this one. Even the track title seems to be a knowing wink:
This isn't the strongest track on it, but the new DFRNT is also really good, one of my favourites of the year. Quite a few dub techno tracks infused with soulful post-dubstep sampling. Might be of interest to you Woony, regarding your endless dub techno acceptance angst.

I loved DFRNT when I was into dubstep so I checked the album out back when it came out. Although I didn't spot the cheeky trance sample.
