Oh no not the Pope!

The Pope will be resigning his post as of Feb. 28. He stated "he no longer had the mental and physical strength to run the Roman Catholic Church." This is the first time a Pope has resigned since the Middle Ages.

Does this mean we stone him? Must be a rough life living in your gold house with your gold Rolex and diamond shoes funded by deception & indoctrination.

No it means he steps down and they elect a new Pope. He's also 85 years old. It's pretty surprising since most Popes cease being the Pontiff through death, but it's probably best if his health is preventing him from serving the position at the level of which it should be served. It also opens the door for a more liberal Pope, as Ratzinger is way more conservative than John Paul II was.

You think a powerful catholic church is a good thing?
srussell0018
I'm almost positive I never said or inferred that in any way.

To answer your idiotic question, I think a new Pope who is much more liberal would be an incredibly good thing for the Roman Catholic Church.

You really are pretty stupid.

Well I would like to make the argument that an old and incompetent pope is good because it erodes the power of the catholic church.

What an excellent way to conduct political arguments. I totally agree with your assertion that I'm stupid because I have a different opinion to you by the way. Excellent and well backed up logic.

That's because you're a moron. Having an old and weak Pope has absolutely all to do with the power of the church. John Paul II could barely walk when he died, and he was one of the most influential, liberal, and forward thinking Popes the Catholic Church has ever seen. They had better relations with other religions, they made progress towards loosening church doctrine, and made strides to bridge the gap between science and religion.

But you're right, having an old decrepit Pope is definitely a good thing, despite it having nothing to do with church "power." This Pope is one of the most conservative Popes in recent history and basically destroyed all progress JPII made. His becoming Pope turned the Catholic Church in the complete wrong direction, and you think it's a good idea that he stay there, even though his staying there will have absolutely nothing to do with what you think it will.

My, you are daft aren't you?

I'm sure there's arguments for why your suggestion is better, but conveniently you've neglected to share them. Are you going to elaborate or are you just going to throw out insults?

Unlike you I'm not a papal apologist and I think the best course of action/circumstances would be papal authority being removed as quickly as possible. What if a new more liberal pope follows very similar policies as usual but just gets better at defending them in public? That's really not going to benefit anyone.

[edit] Elaboration was given in edit of above post.
