At first, thought that Output didn't have, but they do have cold water taps upstairs.
filling up there, last week, the attendant actually tried to stop me:
"we want you to buy at the bar".
So, now he gets a couple of bucks tip beforehand, no problem.
But that was sort of crass.
(I simply won't spend a couple grand on water a year, that's too much)
At Brooklyn Bowl across the street they have free ice-water, just as an example of how else it can be done.
But, it is what it is, they do what they do, I do what I do, no ones forcing us to go if we don't like it... |

| The two most cheap things to do at a club are not checking your coat and filling your water bottle up with tap water. If you're spending some money at the bar I guess it's ok, but its a pretty poverty thing to do. |

Pretty sure it's a NY law that bartenders have to give you a free glass of water if you ask for it. I've had mixed results on that though - some give it without any probs, some I've had to call them out on it. |

It's definitely a law. A lot of places discourage their bartenders from doing that, but if you really persist you will get it. Still nice to tip them, even if you are just getting water tho. |

coat check: ask the people at SRB Sat. before last, or at Roseland, how happy THEY were to have used the coat check, then we'll talk. Personally I prefer listening to music, but if you like waiting in line 2x 30 min or more, hey that's your thing.
In fact, you should go to Irving Plaza on a beautiful 20F day: the pick-up line ALWAYS wraps outside, so that you get to enjoy the warm air in your dry shirt while waiting for your coat.
water: if you give me the 2+ grand I'd spend on bottled water, I'll be happy to support the local economy that way. I especially like those tiny $5 bottles they have at Cielo.
On a more serious note, I can think of better uses for my money than very overpriced water, like buying an oz of gold or a quick weekend drop-in at Timewarp...
call me cheap, I'd can think of a better word for the must buy at bar attitude.
(BTW, would you say this about the Garden, or the Beacon, too? Fine if you would, but if not: I don't go to clubs, I go to places with music I want to listen to that happen to be clubs. When the club itself is the reason to be, count me out. Just see the Jaytech thread for what I mean...) |

I always call them out on it. Works every time. It is a law, and rightfully so. If you own an establishment, you should provide water to its patrons, plain and simple. |

No, the two cheapest things you can do at a club are not tipping either the bartender or the bathroom attendant, both of whom are working for 6-12 hours to help you enjoy your night at the venue. Unless the bartender is being a completely incompetent and rude , I think it's right to tip after every order (or one big tip at the beginning/end of the night,) and if you won't give the bathroom attendant at least $1 throughout the course of the entire night, then that's what I'd call in cheap.
Checking your coat can be iffy. I pretty much always do it, but when I don't, money is never a factor in my decision. Like CarS said, the process of checking/unchecking your coat can be very long and inconvenient, and I guess it partly depends on how valuable you consider your time to be; for some it just isn't worth the hassle. I usually deal with whatever bs comes along with checking, for the sake of being comfortable and not having to worry about my .
And refilling water? When you are sitting down at a nice restaurant, do you ask for a bottle of water every time you are thirsty, or do you allow the server to pour water into you glass, the same exact, high quality NYC tap water that you can get in the bathroom at a club? I won't think twice about spending $15-20 on a drink (I like expensive tequila, lol,) and I'll get a glass of water at the bar if I need ice water, but there are some nights when I'll be drinking a lot of water, and to me it just doesn't make sense to spend $4-8 dollars over and over again (not to mention spending time waiting at the bar) for something that I can get for free just a few steps away. |

yea i kinda agree with the coat check situation
for the bryan kearney party the coat check line was such a mess i saw people waiting 45 min to check it and i said it and i held onto my coat
same thing for blk market nye they had lines for everything
no lie atleast 30-45 min of just standing on lines (entrance,coat check,bathroom,drink tickets,drinks) |

| I don't really think it's that cheap to fill up your water. Also, clubs have been getting slick with not giving you a cap for your water bottle.. That's really cool. So, I pay $8 for a bottle and now I can't even dance with it without having the water splash all over. Win. |

My favorite too, and you really can't buy more than one at a time, no fun.
There is a safety aspect to this as well though:
people tend to screw the cap back on empty bottles before ditching the bottle on the floor.
When you step on one of those, you can really hurt yourself, twisting ankle, falling, etc...
Without a cap, the bottle gest crushed, and way less of a problem
I think that was the main reason the cap-taking started, the fact that it's profitable prob. only cropped up later.
Very important in places where they don't have the floor sweepers during the event...
When I know the take-cap-off venues, I bring my own cap, they tend to be the same for most 16oz bottles.
Reason is not money, but not losing a good spot just to get more water, can stock up...
And just so I can load up on more scorn:
I almost always bring one of those screw-top tetra-pak 17oz containers, folds flat, and most security don't object.
When someone sees me filling that up, I get a shoulda-thought-of-that response.
At MetLife for Springsteen last year, pre-announced cap-take-event, three of those got me through the night, and I kept the nice front floor spot all night.
BTW. thanks to Brad, etc, for the glass of water law tip, I had never heard of that.
Doubt I'll bother much with it, but good to know.
I agree that not tipping, esp. the bathroom attendants, is totally cheap, they're paid on the assumption that people tip
