I think you're not getting the meaning. The bible was taken literally from the outset, and not as some allegorical text in which to interpret meaning from. That's why the Lutheran church pushed for interpetation not literalism. Even today 3 in 10 american believe in bible literalism (7 days, Adam and eve etc) and is actually the recorded word of god.
The Lutheran church was basically excommunicated for suggesting it was not literal and that was in the 1600's. It still took another 100 odd years for people to really start accepting that it was allegorical rather than some record of past events.
It was because of the the enlightenment that certain movements felt they needed to go back to or reinforce literalism.
Don't forget, this isn't about just religion. Enlightenment is better described as the age of reason, where skepticism, science and tolerance replaced faith and tradutions of belief.
In the context that i stated it (and what David Starkey is getting at) the age of reason hasn't hit the majority of Islam yet. Again, as the taboos (drawing of the prophet, women baring skin/driving/working etc) get diluted, so will the fanaticism of the religion itself, just as happened with Chrstianity. Apparently less than 500,000 people go to church regularly in the UK. Less than 1% of the population. |
