Crazy. My thoughts are with the French people and the staff at the newspaper. Terribly sad that peoples lives were lost because some irrational religist was offended by some drawings.
My heart sunk when I learned of this. I wish I could do something beside type comments on the internet. Does anyome know where I can by the newest Charlie? I heard they are printing 1 million copies. |

If it was printed on paper it'd be worth bog roll.
Send the writer to Pakistan, Aceh Province or Saudi Arabia with a bundle of their liberal views under their arm on functional, harmonious society and see just how far those countries would come to meet them in the middle ground when it comes to tolerance, religious freedom and justice.
Their head would be on a stick by midday.
Migration to another country means integrating with that countries accepted standards.
You don't like it or you think its against your beliefs, maybe that country isn't for you after all and if you go there under the premise of making war, then you accept the consequences of that action. Its take a while, but even the US is slowly starting to wake up to the fact that poking people with a sharp stick and covering them with freedom bombs, might actually come back to bite them. |

I really don't get what is so hard to understand. The muslim religion and many muslim countries did not go through the enlightenment.
They are (to paraphrase David Starkey), where Christianity was in the 16th century; taking the book literally and protecting it's sanctity with violent means.
Last year, Bill Maher held up a carton on his show Featuring Buddha, Jesus, Shiva etc (but notably without Mohammed) all in a lewd positions.
Maher got exactly zero death threats and none of these religions gave a about it publicly.
He said you simply cannot do that with Islam and he wouldn't dare as it would endanger the lives of people who worked on his show.
Islam is just being brought kicking and screaming in to the 21st century. The taboos are being broken and as they are, things will calm down. |

Just a point of correction... No sect of Christianity took "the book" literally (in the sense you mean) until the 19th century. More Christians take the bible literally now than at any point in history, and those that do only make up a tiny minority of Christians (approx 7%). |

Are you saying there's a correlation between The Enlightenment and human morality? Because if there is, I wonder how the the Nazis and the Holocaust came to be. |
