The sheer scope and size of Miami's week in March makes BPM look miniscule.
If anything, perhaps WMC has indeed grown too large and can't handle as many parties as venues are trying to throw. But I see no way in hell that WMC will diminish in any substantial way. I had an absolute blast at everything I went to during WMC and everything was packed. When Anjunadeep absolutely packs the house during a day party on Saturday in a little venue in Wynwood, you're not going to convince me that WMC is dying.
I'm sure there were parties that struggled but I don't buy it that BPM is replacing WMC. It's an asinine suggestion, no offense. Have heard from many people who have been to BPM that some of the venues, as Rissinite stated, are simply not up to par. A whole week of the same old thing (beach parties at a handful of semi-decent venues with some questionable production) seems like it'd get old really fast. The northerners coming from NYC and Chicago and Canada probably think more highly of it than anyone else. As a Floridian, I say "big deal." The diversity of the parties, the production values, the (for the most part) great sound, and size of some of the bigger WMC events are not equalled by what BPM is able to do with the presently built venues in PDC. |
+1. When venues are charging $100 at the door like Space and the bigger pool parties did and people are actually paying it, that's just not a sign of something that is going to die off soon. |

Exactly. Prices were steep this year. And sold out anyways. People were paying $150+ on Stubhub for Digweed at ing TREEHOUSE of all places (like the place but I would never spend $150 for a night there, it's just not that sort of place -- but it was indeed a great set, I only spent $30 for my ticket :D )
I'd like to check out BPM but I keep hearing from people that I trust that the sound and production is lacking big time. And maybe I'm lame but I still love the big massive events with sick production. Not every event I do needs to be like that but at least one. You don't get that at BPM. It's just a bunch of laid-back events on the beach.
If we're comparing events in the Americas, for the money, nothing beats Movement. The mainstage is always an amazing show, the Beatport stage and "Ravecave" are just sick, and the vibe is unmatched. Maybe it's not on a Mexican beach but when you factor in scale, variety of artists, and how well it's curated, not sure how you can beat it. Plus I love the leaning towards TECHNO!
Gotta admit that the Nocturnal Wonderland that was announced for Riverside, CA during Labor Day weekend looks interesting. An all-night festival. Gonna be a big EDM influence at the fest but the phase one lineup includes a Drumcode and Anjunadeep stages. Maybe it's not a "serious" event like BPM or Movement or the better "side" of WMC, but I'm sure you could have a blast at something like that.
Too bad I'm going to Sweden :toothless |

One thing Insomniac can't be knocked for they have damn near the best production out of anything I've ever seen.
For their West Coast massives that is. |

I also don't doubt the shake-down tactics by the Mexican policia. Saw it with my own eyes in both Colombia and Peru, and these instances didn't even take place in high-tourist areas. A buddy I befriended who was from Sweden was just randomly searched and was bribed $250 USD for having a few grams of bud in Taganga, Colombia. It's the way Latin American cops make a little extra side cash off white tourists.
Of course the high prices and douche-factor in Miami during the WMC week are too huge negatives. That's why you say em both and fly to Europe instead :toothless |
I agree with you but the Mexican venues are dumping major money into them to get them up to par. Mamitas, Blue Parrot and a few more are in the middle of updating/upgrading the venues.
I think a lot of you are missing my point on this, the people from the states love Miami but I'm speaking in global terms here and a lot of Europeans and British aren't coming because of the exchange rates and how expensive everything has been. Again parties my be packed and I've been in the lucky position of seeing ticket numbers on year over year basis for some of the bigger parties but they were below last years numbers, that's all I'm saying. A lot of these parties are barely breaking even as well. It's not going to be an overnight exodus but you are going to see it dwindle over the next few years.
And your last line sums up exactly why europeans are staying home :) |

Point taken. I did think there were probably simply too many promoters and venues trying to get in on the WMC cashflow. Was the Circoloco warehouse party that was basically announced at the last minute really necessary? Especially with the HUGE night at Space, Ellum at Trade, and the Circo event earlier that day at a pool party? There were other late-announced head scratchers too, like Guy Gerber at FDR. I don't remember much buzz or hype about that one at all.
As long as the big players (Space, Trade, Story Treehouse, Surfcomber, Raleigh, stuff like that) continue to do it big for WMC, that's all I really care about. Definitely agree that there's just too many parties competing for a limited amount of dollars. Seemingly every hotel pool this year tried to throw parties. Thought it was a big mistake. |

This, Apollonia too :eyes:
But that party lost money NO doubt.
Mana was to be honest if it wasn't for the two above mentioned I'd have nothing good to say about it. Last Resort was a snooze, regret that one. |

| I think next year I'm gonna do Desert Hearts instead of Conference then off to DGTL again. Desert Hearts looks like a proper good time. |

We were kicking it with one of the organizers at the Paradise party during BPM, Mikey Lion. Just seems like a top notch party in the desert with solid lineups. Happens during conference every year. It's on the Indian Reservation in SoCal.
just seems like a legit thing and I've heard nothing but greatness from people who have gone/played.

They do an event in November also. I think the fall event is slightly bigger.
Edit: Spring is the bigger one. |

Yes Bi-annual. I'm just looking at the spring one because I plan on ADE in the fall next year. |
