shopping for a new computer

I created a thread a few years back when my (ex)cat knocked over a glass of water on my old Macbook and fried it - can't find it, though. I ended up replacing it with a used Macbook Pro, which has done me well. But I think it's time to upgrade to a brand spanking new laptop (I'd love an iMac when/if I settle). I'd like to stick with Apple since I'm so used to it and have never had problems with either computer I've owned. But the prices for Macs in the UK are outrageous - I might as well just fly to the States for a family visit to buy a new one ffs. Then again, I'm open to checking out some other options.
Has anyone bought anything new lately that delivers? Any duds? I'm quite unfamiliar with the latest PC brands making a splash in the market.
I've even thought about getting the iPad Pro and using it as a laptop - buying separate mouse and keyboard - but the more I think about it, the less I like the idea. |

When did you get to the UK? Here for long?
I've been very happy with a 2-in-1 laptop-tablet hybrid from Asus I bought a few years back - I never actually use it as a tablet, but it's wonderful to have a touch-screen on the laptop. It's worked reliably for 3+ years despite me absolutely abusing the hell out of it. I'll probably buy a new one when this one starts to show some more wear. |

| Take a look at the Dell XPS 13 and 15 models. The new XPS 13 is supposed to have some ridiculous battery life - like 22 hrs or something, though I am sure that was in a very specific, Dell-engineered test. With that said, though, almost every major review site gives the XPS 13 very good marks. The biggest agreed upon complaint with it is the placement of its web cam due to the very thin bezels on the monitor. Oh, final note, that 22 hr battery life is on the model with the FHD 1920x1080 IPS display. Dell offers a 4K/UHD option as well, but on a 13" screen that is overkill to me. |

Been here for a month, and yea, it looks like I'm around for at least five more before my visa expires. Trying to get my EU passport situation sorted.

I'm scared of owning a Dell :nervous:
I don't care about battery life, webcams, etc. as much as a clean user interface. That's key, for me.
I have no clue what the most recent versions of Windows look/feel like, though.
A laptop with an ergonomic keyboard would be nice, too. The Macbook Pro's keyboard is giving me arthritis :whip: |

I'm not a Dell fanboi by any means, but the XPS 13 is generally agreed upon to be a good piece of kit/bang-for-buck. That's the only point I was trying to drive home.
But, if you are Dell averse, consider looking at the Asus Zenbook line. I've got an older Zenbook UX305 with the low wattage CoreM CPU (Broadwell architecture), and it's a very nice little ultrabook. |

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad 13 ...got it last year with the aluminum cover and I love it. Bought my own SSD and upgraded memory and installed it for maximum cheapness. For $1200 CAD I got a sweet little computer that does everything I need it to...as long as you're not editing video/playing games you're fine.

You like classic trance/house much these days? Going to be a good classics Halloween boat party a few people will (should) be at on 28 October.
I'm currently using a Transformer Book, because I like the large screen and numpad, but I'm looking at getting a ZenBook soon if there's either a Black Friday or Boxing Day (post-Christmas) sale. |

I like my Vaio. With a 15" screen, it's gigantic, huge even, and light. My wife dropped it down an escalator, and it's still perfect.
It's my 3rd Vaio, actually. The first non-Sony one. Simply glorious. |

| I hate contributing to a throw away society but no matter what the brand after about 4 years all laptops slow down and their battery life sucks. I'm a big fan of iPads for simple tasks. They run more efficiently than your standard Microsoft laptop. |

I've been browsing the Zenbooks - very nice.
I had planned on going to Guy's J boat party next month, but it doesn't sound like fun considering how cold it already feels. I'm used to fantasizing about going to a Miami boat party :o
I imagine the festivities take place inside the cabin of the boat, yea? |
