How does everybody here organise their MP3 music collection?
I tend to download all my new stuff to a New Downloads folder, and then rename them as I like and add their details to an Excel spreadsheet I keep of every song I have. Then they go to my Singles folder.
Only problem is, when I want to backup some onto CD, I'm not particularly happy about the character limit on filenames, especially when there are songs with ridiculously long names.. first one that comes to mind: Dusted - Always Remember To Shorten Your Song Name To A Reasonable Length (Paul Van Dyk Remix)..
So what do you do about the character limit when backing up to CDs?
Thanks for your input, I know it's a pretty useless thread otherwise. |

well, i used to... just go by date of d/l, but now i put them in alphebetical order..... the difference is, in date order...... you can find your new shiz straight away....... in name order. you can find all your shiz by the same artist...... id say prob name order is best;)
oh yeah.. text in upper and lower case :D |

| Daily..each day i make a folder by date. Ex. 1106 representing Nevember 6th. As things upload to me it automatically moves it from my 'incoming' folder to the correct date it was released. :) Saves me alot of times. :D |

Artist- Track Name (Remix)
Edit all the ID3 tags so they're correct and add my signature "Part of TeKnoHe@d2025's MP3 collection" to each one, as for the folders I create a folder named "New MP3s" and once I get enough (say 5-8 GB) I burn them to CD and rename the folder to the date that I burned them on like: MP3s 11.06.02
Then I create a playlist with all of the files that I burned and name the CDs MP3s 11.06.02 So if I ever need to find a song I can just look at the list. It's a nice setup if you ask me ;) |

I used to do that, but it wasn't a long term solution.. :(
I name my files as like this:
Matt Darey pres. Mash Up feat. Marcella Woods - Beautiful (Original Mix).mp3
.. with capitalised letters, apart from abbreviations like 'feat.', 'pres.' and 'vs.'.
Generally I fill the ID3 tags with the full title of the song, and any extra information I know, so that if I copy a file from a backed up CDR then I know its full title if it has been cropped.
Could somebody explain the reasoning behind naming things like this? (apart from the lack of whitespace - the benefits are obvious there):
03_artist-title_(mix)_initials.mp3
Thanks for the response people, keep it up! |

Files are set up like this usually by the release groups...when they release the MP3s they title them like this and the _ are just seperators. |

Makes sense if they're on FTPs, I suppose.
Out of interest, what is the character limit on filenames? .. and does the limit alter on different CD writing modes? (mode 2 par exemple).. |

BT & Jan Johnston - Mercury & Solace (Transa Remix)
I capitalize all the important words and use & over feat/and.Plus I'm a real bitch about spelling and having the right ID tags :D
So if you ever download from me...you can know that it will be Spick & Span :) |
