haha... this one time i was playing at a party.. was around 600 ppl there, and the stupid mofo that had the party didnt put up any fence around the stage, so ppl would come up and alot of to me...
one of these guys, were an.. uh... colored guy (?) and he was all like
wearing the biggest pants ive ever seen, and he was all like..
"yo play some rap mother******" and was like "no! i hate rap,
and btw, these are turntables, not cd players, i dont got any
hiphop on vinyl" i actually had some oldskool in my bag that ive borrowed from a friend of mine, but no way was i gonna up my set, by playing hiphop, so i just told him to off... and he did..
for a while, atleast...

hmmm in my opinion you need more than just the gear to call yourself a dj....I mean I have gear and i spin frequently at home but have never spun in frnt of a crowd yet...I don't really like to call myself a dj just because I own a mixer, 2 cdplayers and a little djskill :D (although I call myself a DJ when I wanna impress people) :D
I think there are many types of dj's...me fe is what I would call a bedroom dj (for now atleast)
then you have the real dj's that spin at parties and clubs and so on
then there are people that don't have gear but still has the skills, maybe som kind of semi dj's
I could go on forever but i wont, just hoping you got my point
ohh btw I was in that "teach me" situation 2 one time...this girl comes up to the mixer (that was my friends gear but he wasn't there right then) and goes like -"ok, how do I mix"
I was like uhhmmmm this isn't even my gear so I don't really know but okey (I mean wtf she was a nice girl ;))
and then i started explaining the basics of geting 2 tracks to mix with eachother.....then when I was done she just looked at me and went like....-"how tha hell do you remember all that and do it all at once?" :stongue:
so if you ever get into the situation where a person that doesn't know a piss about mixing want to try mixing just do the regullar explanation...and if they have whatsoever talent they will do it and probably do it decent, if not they will just walk away looking like a stupid mofo in their faces :D |

OMG it happened again!
me and kevin were talkin about this other party(not the one im spinnin for) this other party is being kept a secret by the student council, but everyone in it leaked the details out.
kevin didnt kno the details, so i told him.
then he asks me about the party i'll be spinnin for.
he asked, "hey, ur gonna spin at the other party. right?"
so i reluctantly say "yeaaaah.?"
then he says "well u can count me in on it too. ya know im good"
so i give another very reluctant "ha...ha..ha", and then just kinda trail off.
so u know what....im gonna do it. i'll let him spin for 10 min, or so!
i have 2 records from when i first started, that i dont really care for now.
so on tha day of the party im just gonna ask him "soooo, wanna spin as a little warm up before i get on?"
im gettin new carts soon, so on tha day of the party, i'll just bring the old ones. maybe bring the nu ones too as back up incase he breaks sumthin on the old carts.
i dont care how cruel it sounds, but he seriously has been gettin on my nerves lately.
and also, finally after his trainwreck of a "mix", i will order him to move his ass of tha tables, and then i can wow them. even by playin hard trance

Acid John, I suggest you don't do what you're planning on doing, because you can't "win" in any case.
First off, even if he trainwrecks, he will consider himself good - hell, he might not even beatmatch, just slide the x-fader across as a "transition." And people won't be able to tell the difference, being kids and all. Just being behind the decks will be "success" to him, and will make him look "cool."
Second, because of the above, you won't be able to "wow" them because they seriously won't know the difference between proper mixing and just sliding the fader across. Even if they did, they probably wouldn't care at all. Unless you scratch, they consider it all the same.
So save yourself the trouble and potential problems (equipment-wise, etc.) and just tell him "NO."
Just my 2 cents of opinion/advice.

When DJ'ing, think of what you're doing as your "performance" (which is what it is! I'm just emphasizing it). What are some other artists that "perform"? Let's take guitarists. Would anyone come up to a guitarist in a band, while performing, and say, "dude, let me try! 'ya know i'm good'" (like your friend says). What do you think that guitarist would do? I leave that to your imagination. :D
What I'm trying to say is that you should carry an aura of respect about you - YOU're the DJ, and no one should be messing with you while you perform. Of course, this is respected in proper clubs and parties, where the crowd knows what it's there for. But at a high school or such, you will have to work hard(er) to get that same respectability. Don't tarnish it by letting some jackass, know-nothing kid behind the decks - nothing good will come out of that - certainly not to you nor your rep. |

Honesty is a virtue, it is said. If kevin is really your friend, then talk to him and don't be afraid to confront him. Tell him, listen, I really don't think that you're ready to perform live yet. Then explain why, and do it nicely. He is your friend afterall. Why do you want to humiliate him?
If he is really adamant about djing, then show him the ropes, let him practice, and record his practice sessions, then point out where he needs to improve and how he can do that. After you do that, there will be one of two outcomes.
First he will realize that there is a LOT to djing and will lose interest. This will gain you respect in his eyes in addition to him potentially not bothering you about it anymore.
Or second, he will learn that there is a LOT to djing and will actually take the time to learn about it. Then you don't have to cringe when he asks to spin because you've taught him how to do it properly.
Again, if he is your friend, then treat him like one. Don't just try to "teach him the hard way". Think about how you would feel if one of your friends did something similar to you? I'm sure you know how long and humiliating other kids can make his embarassment--and you know they will too. Also, it may come to bite you in the ass too, when kids group both of you together and say, hey, look at the trainwreckers etc. |

1st story:
a friend of mine walked over to me a few days ago and said to me: "hey oren! I heard that DJ Tiesto started spinning vinyl..."
and I was like "WTF!? Tiesto has been spinning vinyl ever since he started....."
so he told me "no, man.... he used to have like 6 CD cases and he used to spin CDs.... too bad though... now he has to throw away a whole bunch of CDs..."

2nd story
oh! and I had my first club gig about 2 weeks ago.... and a friend was driving me over there.... so he asked me if he could do a few mixes while I'm up there (he has no gear, he trainwrecks EVERY mix he tries and gives me that "listen to my awsome mix! it's beatmatched like my face but that doesn't matter cause I'm such a hot DJ" smile....)... so I said no, and added: "get some gear, listen to some tracks, and learn how to push the buttons before you even think of humiliating yourself in a club" (pushing the buttons - on the CDJ... I spin CDs...).
so the f**kface starts laughing at me!!! he said "yeah right, man! why don't you just admit it? you know I'm better than you"....
I almost beat the crap out of him, but I passed, remembering he's my driver... so I just said "man, you don't have any gear! how can you decide you're ANY good??" so he answers "it's a gift..." yeah right!!
so I said "well, if you're so hot and god gifted, how come they hired me to play there and not you?" then he just giggled out of inconvinience and didn't answer.....
lol..... the best part was, he begged me all the way there that I'll let him mix, and when we got there, he saw the crowd and freaked out! and when I started mixing, he saw he can't compare to me... so he said "wow! I see you have been practicing..." and got out of the booth........
