Today's Cannabis Stronger, With More Carcinogens, Than in the 1960s

Nov. 12, 2002 -- Strong words of warning for those who smoke pot: British researchers have found that smoking pure cannabis harms your lungs as much as tobacco does.
Smoking three cannabis joints a day causes the same damage to the lining of the airways as 20 cigarettes. In fact, the tar from a joint contains 50% more cancer-causing substances than tobacco, says the report, published by the British Lung Foundation.
"These statistics will come as a surprise to many people, especially those who choose to smoke cannabis rather than tobacco in the belief that it is 'safer' for them," says Mark Britton, MD, chairman of the British Lung Foundation.
The report surveys all current medical and scientific research into the direct effects of smoking marijuana -- both alone and with tobacco -- on the smoker's respiratory health.
Among the findings:
The cannabis smoked today is much more potent than that smoked in the 1960s -- more than 15 times as potent.
People who smoke cannabis have significantly more respiratory symptoms such as chronic cough and mucus production, wheezing, and acute bronchitis.
Smoking three or four cannabis cigarettes a day causes the same degree of damage to the lining of the airways as 20 or more tobacco cigarettes a day.
Cannabis tends to be smoked in a way that increases the puff volume by two-thirds and the depth of inhalation by one-third. There is an average fourfold longer breath-holding time with cannabis than with tobacco. This means that there is a greater respiratory burden of carbon monoxide and smoke particulates such as tar than when smoking a similar quantity of tobacco.
As with tobacco smoking, the research also shows a possible link between cannabis smoking and emphysema.
A survey earlier this year showed that 79% of children believe that cannabis was 'safe,' according to the British Lung Foundation's news release. Only 2% understood correctly that there are health risks associated with smoking pot.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
And I found this in just 2 minutes, I could do a good search just to argue even more with you but I give up, I really don't care anymore, you are as ignorant as one can be. Either that or you are too closed-minded to accept or even understand what is going on around you |

Yes I've studied that report P'zazz, I'm currently doing my sociology coursework on it, and several other reports from other studies around the globe that all contradict each other. Whats interesting is that the report you mentioned uses a large amount secondary data from others reports. The general consensus of this report and others that cannabis is far safer than tobacco (as the side effects of smoking cannabis are tripled if combined with tobacco) and alcohol ;)
also you've got a review of the entire report, that doesn't give the entire picture.
on a side note is the reviewer of the report mentioned american? |

They're not harmless. But you're missing the point. The risks aren't NEARLY as dangerous as the media will have you believe. A lot of drug deaths are incorrectly reported. Using ecstacy as an example, reports in the UK media have mentioned killer pills 4 times stronger than than normal pills pretty much cooking people! Now sorry, but even a small amount of actual education on the effects of MDMA will show you that this is a blatent lie. say your average pill contains 100mg of MDMA, they're basically saying that 400mg will kill you. Given that more than 50% of the ecstacy users take more than 5 pills a night on a regular basis there is obviously a discreprency there. They tell you that pills are so dangerous, yet their studies also tell us however-many million people in the UK alone use it every weekend. Do you see reports of people dropping dead in nightclubs on a regular basis? Because I don't. Deaths in nightclubs are often blamed on E if it's has been taken. These deaths are usually down to either dehydration or water intoxication (water intoxication is not a side effect of ecstacy use...if you drink too much water you'll suffer side effects whether you've taken an E or not). Granted, these are risks an E user faces but the media and government spin like use the "just say no" approach which isn't really going to work if they're telling kids "but they can be used safely if you're sensible".
Killer pills just don't exist. Come on, think about it, the drugs world is hardly a safe place. What do you think would happen if I made killer pills and sold them? In order to get them into circulation I'd have to go through some pretty nasty characters. I'd probably end up with a shotgun up my ring piece within week.
I'm not saying drugs are 100% safe, the side effects are there. But there are so many other "socially acceptable" things which are just sa, if not more dangerous. You mentioned comedowns... they're not as bad as you'd think :) in fact I much prefer an E comedown to an alcohol hangover. Yeah you feel a bit for a couple of days but I would feel even worse if I went on a drinking binge. You mentioned expense... an average night getting drunk will cost me £20-£30. 3 pills will cost me less than £10. Drugs making you violent?? I'd like an example of a drug that causes this.
Yeah, drug abuse can cause problems such as depression. But if the lady down the street started abusing her sleeping pills they'd do the same. If the bloke next doors' alcohol habit got a bit out of control he'd get the same.
Go to www.erowid.org and read up on some of the effects and side effects as reported by users. Not in an attempt to change your mind, but proper education is the key. You'll then be able to come back and argue your points with proper information. The site is a very valuable resource and everything is managed very seriously and responsibly. You wont find anything on there trying to convince you drugs are good, or bad (user experiences not included, but these go both ways). |

It's not very often that a pot smoker smokes 3 or 4 joints a day...unless they are a real heavy user. I and many others know that weed is worse for your lungs than cigarettes. But lets see, I probably smoke once a week which causes very little damage compared to if I smoked a pack of cigarettes a day. True, weed would probably give you cancer but it would take a long time unless you're a heavy user. |

Looks at floor shamefully.
I'll have 2 or 3 most weekdays. probably 20 over the course of a Fri/Sat/Sun. These are shared with 3-4 other people though. |
