WORLD NEW ROUND-UP!
EGYPT:
After protests from the Simon Wiesenthal Center, UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura joined with the Center in demanding that the first Arabic translation of the infamous antisemitic forgery, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion be removed from an historic library in Alexandria, Egypt. The book had been prominently displayed as a 'Jewish Holy Book' alongside the holy books of monotheistic religions. Prior to the removal of the hate text, the Center urged then-European Union President, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, to limit EU funding of the library until the Protocols were removed. UNITED STATES:
The Simon Wiesenthal Center has been increasingly disturbed by a growing trend in American politics of labeling political opponents as Nazis. Against this backdrop, the Center demanded that two controversial ads submitted in a nationwide contest sponsored by the MoveOn.org group, which compared U.S. President George Bush to Adolf Hitler, be removed. Rabbi Marvin Hier, the Center's dean and founder called on MoveOn.org to publicly repudiate and remove the offensive ads saying that, "Adolf Hitler was responsible for the greatest crime in the history of mankind - the Holocaust... to compare Hitler to an American President... defames the Holocaust."
Just 24 hours after the Center's protest, Wes Boyd, founder and president of MoveOn.org personally called Rabbi Hier to express his regrets for the posting of the ads adding that, "We agree that the two ads in question were in poor taste and deeply regret that they [the ads] slipped through our screening process. In the future, if we publish or broadcast raw material, we will create a more effective filtering system."
Following this incident, Rabbi Hier, pictured right, condemned the recent rash of targeting political opponents as Nazis such as the one comparing Democratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean to Joseph Goebbels and followers of Dean to "Hitler's Brownshirts" and the Gestapo. "Such attacks, whether from the left or the right, are an insult to the millions of victims of Hitler and his Third Reich," said Rabbi Hier. He also urged politicians and the media to, "act responsibly, to reject these smear tactics, and to avoid cheapening the memory of the Holocaust."
CANADA:
"There is no question that going after those who incite terrorism is key to defeating terrorism." That was the response of Canada's new Justice Minister and noted human rights activist Irwin Cotler, (pictured middle with SWC Associate Dean, Rabbi Abraham Cooper, left; and Friends of SWC Canadian Director, Leo Adler, right). Following Mr. Cotler's statement, Rabbi Cooper urged Canada to take a leading role in the campaign to have suicide bombings declared a crime against humanity.
On the issue of international terrorism, Rabbi Cooper met with Stockwell Day, Canada's Conservative Party's Foreign Affairs critic and a Member of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, who endorsed the Center's campaign. Cooper also met with Quebec Member of Parliament Richard Marceau who was instrumental in getting Canada's National Holocaust Remembrance Day resolution passed and who gave his assurances that he would do everything possible to aid the Center in having suicide bombings recognized as crimes against humanity.
IRELAND:
The Center denounced Ireland for dropping antisemitism from a generic United Nations resolution condemning religious intolerance. "This is a terrible blow for it follows the letter and spirit of the infamous UN World Conference Against Racism held in Durban, South Africa. This move can only further encourage the most extreme anti-Israel and antisemitic governance," said Rabbi Cooper.
Following the Center's protest to Irish President Mary McAleese, Ireland then introduced a separate resolution condemning antisemitism. However, since UN rules demand unanimous approval for such a resolution, it had no chance of passage and was quickly withdrawn.
UNITED STATES:
The Simon Wiesenthal Center urged organizers of a Southern California Muslim football tournament to change the names of some of the teams or cancel the event after learning that some of the teams were named "Intifada," "Soldiers of Allah," and "Mujahideen." "The names like Mujahideen and Intifada evoke images and actions of organizations that promote terrorism and mass murder of innocent civilians," said Rabbi Abraham Cooper. "At a time when members of the Mujahideen attack American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq and perpetrators of the so-called Intifada mass-murder innocent Israeli children and their families in discotheques, pizza parlors, and at religious celebrations, it is beyond words that any American gathering would publicly and proudly promote such horrors," he added. Local Muslim leaders also asked that the team names be changed. Eventually, all the names were changed with the exception of Intifada. |

JIHAD UNSPUN AND GOOGLE NEWS
The Google search engine is the most popular method in the world for finding information online, handling more than 200 million search requests a day. Building on their success, Google has now developed Google News (www.news.google.com), a portal that is quickly becoming one of the most influential sources of world news.
Here's how it works: Google News has accepted thousands of news sources for inclusion in a pool, which Google's computer continually scans by algorithm to group articles by topic. When the user types in a search word, such as 'Israel', Google News presents links to hundreds of relevant news stories on that topic. (Greater prominence is given to articles more recently released, and more popular online.)
But with the proliferation of vitriolic anti-Israel and anti-Semitic material on the web (the number of neo-Nazi websites in Germany, for example, has tripled in the past four years) and much of it deliberately disguised in 'news format', the question is: What does Google News consider a legitimate news source ¯ as opposed to fiction or propaganda? The Google News website states only:
While the sources of the news vary in perspective and editorial approach, their selection for inclusion is done without regard to political viewpoint or ideology.
This goal to present a broad spectrum of viewpoints is praiseworthy, but HonestReporting is concerned with Google News' acceptance of one particular site ¯ Jihad Unspun ¯ as Mideast 'news', despite the site's record of blatantly distorting established facts, glorifying terror, and publishing highly defamatory anti-Semitic material. Jihad Unspun's articles appear prominently on searches for Israel-related topics on Google News. But click through, and this is what Jihad Unspun serves up:
¯ Outrageous 'Zionist conspiracy theories', such as the canard that 9/11 was a sinister Zionist plot, as were the recent Istanbul bombings: 'Zionist Intelligence Engineered Istanbul Blasts'.
¯ The authors generally refuse to call Israel by name, employing instead the terms 'Zionist forces' and 'Hebrew state'. Some examples:
'Resistance Fighters Attack Zionist Vehicles' (i.e., deadly terror attacks on Israeli civilian cars)
'Zionist Chief of Staff Promises More Suffering for Palestinians'
'Hebrew State Refuses British Involvement'
'Zionist Terrorist Forces Demolish More Palestinians Homes, Mosque'
¯ All of Israel is referred to as 'occupied territory' and all Israelis are 'settlers'. For example, a report on the closing of the Sbarro's pizzeria, site of the horrific 2001 bombing, reads:
Owners of a Zionist restaurant in central occupied Jerusalem have failed to convince customers to frequent it anew. Clients deserted the 'Subaru' restaurant after a Palestinian commando blew himself up in it about three years ago, killing 17 settlers and wounding tens others.
¯ The site publishes the writings of the rabidly anti-Semitic Edgar J. Steele, including an article with these passages:
It isn't Arabs rigging the US stock market and commodities futures markets - it is jews.
It wasn't Arabs who sent our military into Afghanistan and Iraq - it was jews
It wasn't Arabs who forged the Anne Frank "diary" - it was jews.
It wasn't Arabs who lied about gas chambers at Dachau and Auschwitz - it was jews.
It wasn't Arabs who demolished the World Trade Center - it was jews.
It wasn't Arabs who had Jesus Christ crucified - it was jews.
The owner and publisher of Jihad Unspun is Khadija Abdul Qahaar (a.k.a. Bev Kennedy), who converted to Islam after 9/11, became an advocate for its most radical fringe, then launched the website without any journalistic credentials.
While the site is duly protected by the First Amendment (we found no overt calls to murder), the material Jihad Unspun publishes does not meet a reasonable definition of 'news', but is rather anti-Israel and anti-American propaganda that masquerades as news. Google News recognizes this loophole in its system ¯ in March of last year Google News responded to an email campaign protesting the inclusion of the radical Indymedia site (where the term 'Zionazis' was prevalent), and removed Indymedia from their service.
With the highly influential Google News still a work-in-progress (it remains in experimental 'beta' mode), HonestReporting encourages subscribers to write to Google News at [email protected], encouraging the removal of Jihad Unspun from their list of legitimate news sites. Though the goal of providing a spectrum of news sources is laudable, hateful propaganda has no place on Google News. |

PARTISAN EDITING AT HERALD TRIBUNE
As the Israeli-Hezbullah prisoner exchange develops this week, HonestReporting subscribers are encouraged to visit our online weblog ¯ www.mediabackspin.com ¯ for media critiques, essential background information, and links to important articles on the exchange that you might otherwise have missed.
HonestReporting has long held that media misrepresentation of the Mideast conflict is one of the primary sources of anti-Israel and anti-Jewish attitudes worldwide. The latest disturbing indication: An Italian newspaper poll found that one-third of Europeans feels Jews should "stop playing 'Holocaust victim' games," and nearly half of Europeans believe that "Jews are different" and have "a particular relationship with money." In all European countries, anti-Semitic sentiment was positively correlated with anti-Israel sentiment.
While ongoing vilification of Israel in European media is part of the problem, veteran journalist Evelyn Gordon has discovered yet another disturbing development: The deliberate tilting of previously balanced articles by one prominent European newspaper ¯ the International Herald Tribune. In an article in today's Jerusalem Post, reprinted below, Gordon finds that the Herald Tribune has altered at least two New York Times articles on the Israeli-Arab conflict in an effort to make Israel look worse to the Herald Tribune's mostly European readers. (We've added links to the original NY Times and Herald Tribune articles, so subscribers can verify Gordon's statements.)

Anyone puzzled by the vast difference between European and American attitudes toward Israel ought to spend some time comparing two newspapers: The New York Times and the Paris-based International Herald Tribune.
That may seem like an odd statement, since the IHT is owned by the Times and most of its articles are Times reprints ¯ or at least, so the reader would assume, as they are credited to the Times and appear under Times reporters' bylines.
But it turns out that IHT editors often "improve" the Times copy a bit. The adjustments are minor in terms of the amount of text changed, yet sufficient to give the reader a completely different understanding of events.
I discovered this only last month, having never before thought to compare an IHT article to its Times original. What sparked the discovery was a piece in the IHT's December 27-28 edition, entitled "Israeli tactics assure future bombings, Palestinians assert" and credited to the Times. The article's main thrust was that the Israel Defense Forces believes its two-pronged anti-terror campaign ¯ construction of the separation fence and frequent raids aimed at arresting terrorists and destroying bomb-making facilities ¯ has significantly reduced the number of successful attacks.
But the article also claimed that the December 25 bombing at the Geha Junction ended a three-month period that "seemed to be a sort of unofficial cease-fire. In that time, Palestinian radical groups carried out no suicide bombings."
This struck me as outrageous, since a cease-fire implies that no attacks were attempted ¯ whereas, according to IDF statistics, there were no fewer than 22 attempted suicide bombings during that time, all foiled by Israel's security forces. But when I checked the article on the Times Web site in preparation for an angry letter to that paper, I discovered the following:
The Times never referred to this period as a cease-fire.
The Times explicitly mentioned that "numerous terror attempts" had been made during this period and were thwarted by Israel; that entire paragraph was cut from the IHT piece.
The Times did not say that Palestinians "carried out no suicide bombings," giving the false impression that they attempted none; it merely said, correctly, that no bombings took place.
Moreover, the Times article carried a very different ¯ and far more accurate ¯ headline:
"Bombing after lull: Israel still believes the worst is over."
The result is that the average Times reader came away with the following impression: Israel's military activity produced three months in which no Israelis were killed, despite "numerous terror attempts." This activity is thus saving Israeli lives, and therefore potentially justifiable.
But the IHT reader received the opposite impression: Neither the fence nor the raids were justified, since there was an "unofficial cease-fire" and Palestinians were not committing attacks in any case. Moreover, since no attempts took place during this period, Israel's activity did not save a single life.
In short, rather than preventing bombings, Israel is, as the IHT headline asserts, "assuring future bombings" by persecuting the Palestinians for no reason.
The IHT later published a letter from me on this subject, but again with crucial distortions. One sentence was cut altogether: "The version of the article that appeared in The New York Times did mention that 'numerous' attempted attacks were thwarted during this period and did not refer to it as a 'cease-fire.'"
Another sentence ¯ "according to Israeli army statistics, Palestinians attempted to carry out 22 suicide bombings during this time" ¯ was replaced by "according to one count, Palestinians attempted to carry out more than 20 suicide bombings during this time."
Thus the IHT cut both of the sources I cited for my assertion that attacks were attempted ¯ the Times and the IDF ¯ and substituted an unsourced "according to one count." That leaves the reader with the impression that I have no source ¯ I cannot even say according to whose count ¯ and my assertion is therefore not credible.
Since this episode, I have discovered that the IHT often subtly alters Times copy to make its readers dislike Israel more.
On January 2, for instance, the Times ran an article stating that in 1973, the Nixon administration considered invading three Arab countries "if the [oil] embargo, imposed by Arab nations in retaliation for America's support for Israel in the 1973 Middle East war, did not end." The IHT altered this to state that Nixon planned to invade "if tensions between Israel and its Arab neighbors continued to escalate after the October 1973 Middle East War or if the oil embargo did not abate."
Moreover, the IHT erased the statement ¯ repeated twice in the Times article ¯ that the embargo was due to America's wartime support for Israel, substituting the statement that it was imposed "to try to pressure the United States and other Western countries to force Israel to withdraw from Arab land."
Thus the Times reader concludes that Nixon was angered by an Arab action, the embargo, which was retaliation for an American action ¯ wartime support for an ally. Israel was clearly involved, but this was primarily an Arab-American dispute.
The IHT reader, in contrast, concludes that Nixon's main concern was not the Arab action, but "tensions between Israel and its Arab neighbors"; the embargo gets only second billing. Moreover, the embargo was aimed not at American policy, but at a mysterious Israeli seizure of Arab land whose background ¯ the fact that it was captured in a defensive war ¯ is never explained. In short, the entire crisis was Israel's fault.
Very few people know more about Israel than what they learn from the media. It is therefore not surprising that readers fed on a diet of such subtle distortions view Israel as the villain.
Unfortunately, in Europe the IHT's behavior is the norm rather than the exception.

PA POLICEMAN/TERRORIST PA POLICEMAN/TERRORIST
Thursday morning (Jan. 29), a Palestinian terrorist committed yet another horrific suicide bombing on a packed Jerusalem bus, killing ten Israelis and injuring more than fifty. Of particular note ¯ this terrorist was a PA policeman: PA Policeman/Terrorist Ali Jaarah
Palestinian security officials said later Thursday that the bomber was a member of the Palestinian police, from the West Bank city of Bethlehem.
All major news agencies ¯ AP, New York Times, Washington Post ¯ included this chilling fact in a prominent manner, since it indicates how just how far Arafat's PA is from rooting out terror.
All agencies, that is, except one: Reuters completely omitted the terrorist's occupation as a PA policeman from their reports.
This is just the latest in a long pattern of Reuters' whitewashing PA collusion in Palestinian terror. Sometimes it's more subtle ¯ on Jan. 28, Reuters reported (emphasis added):
The army has destroyed dozens of Palestinian police stations in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, accusing security forces of either turning a blind eye to militant groups attacking Israelis or taking part themselves in the three-year-old uprising.
Reuters' claim that Israel merely 'accuses' the PA police of taking part in terrorist activity was inaccurate even before today's attack. As one of many examples, in January, 2002 a PA policeman was arrested and personally confessed to terrorist acts.
It has become increasingly clear that Reuters has an agenda to obscure facts that cast the PA in a negative light. Reuters has stubbornly refused to respond directly to readers' complaints, so the time has come for another approach.
Does your local paper carry Reuters articles on the Mideast conflict? If so, HonestReporting encourages you to contact your paper, indicating that given Reuters' repeated obscuring of key facts, the local paper should switch to a more objective news source ¯ one that does not regularly whitewash Palestinian terror and PA corruption. |

THE FATAH-AL AQSA BRIGADE
Dear HonestReporting Subscriber,
This morning (Feb.22) a suicide bomber on a Jerusalem bus killed 8 Israelis ¯ including two teenagers on their way to school ¯ and injured over 60.
The attack was perpetrated by a member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades. While it is generally accepted that this terrorist group is connected to Yassir Arafat's Fatah party, most major news agencies continued to downplay that relationship in today's reports:
¯ Associated Press: "The Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, a militant group loosely affiliated with Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, claimed responsibility for the attack and identified the bomber as Mohammed Zool, 23, from the village of Hussan near Bethlehem."
¯ Washington Post: "Hezbollah television station Al-Manar reported that the bombing was carried out by the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the militant group that associates itself with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement..."
¯ CNN: "The Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades ¯ the military offshoot of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement ¯ claimed responsibility for the blast in a statement."
¯ Agence France Presse: "The bombing, claimed by the radical Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an armed offshoot of Arafat's Fatah movement..."
DIRECT CONNECTION
The evidence, however, clearly indicates that the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade is not some "loose offshoot," but rather has a direct and ongoing bond to the Fatah party, which holds a majority of seats in the Palestinian Parliament. The Palestinian government, therefore, bears direct responsibility for the group's heinous terrorist acts:
▪ In November, 2003 a BBC investigation found that up to $50,000 a month was funneled by Fatah directly to the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades. When BBC reported on today's attack, their terminology was consistent with these findings ¯ unlike the outlets above, BBC described the relationship between Fatah and the terrorists in an entirely accurate manner:
The militant al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, part of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction, has claimed responsibility for the suicide attack.
▪ Documents captured by the IDF in 2002 indicated Fatah's "systematic, institutionalized and ongoing financing" of the Al Aqsa Brigades, including a special allocation to the Bethlehem branch of the organization (the very group that dispatched today's bomber). After inspecting these documents, President Bush called for Arafat's removal in June, 2002.
▪ The leader of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in Tulkarm told USA Today on March 14, 2002: "The truth is, we are Fatah, but we didn't operate under the name of Fatah...We are the armed wing of the organization. We receive our instructions from Fatah. Our commander is Yasser Arafat himself."
▪ Last week, British MP Jenny Tonge went to visit Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades' Bethlehem branch. BBC's Radio 4 carried a report in which the terrorists themselves admit they are "part of Fatah...the militant part." (Click here to hear the report ¯ the statement regarding Fatah is about 2:50 in.)
HonestReporting calls on other media outlets to follow the BBC's lead and specify the integral connection between Fatah and the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.
FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEM
High school students mourning a classmate
This is not merely a semantic matter. The close ties that bond the Fatah-led PA to terrorist groups are the fundamental problem that prevents progress toward peaceful reconciliation. The dominant political party in the PA remains a direct sponsor of ongoing terrorism ¯ the ruling politicians and the terrorists are one and the same.
If media outlets fail to convey this, their readers and viewers certainly can't understand Israel's position in the raging debate over the security fence, which tomorrow reaches the world court at The Hague.
One paper that clearly doesn't "get it" is The Chicago Tribune, which published today three op-eds (1,2,3) railing against the security fence, all under the theme "Build Bridges, Not Walls."
Israel has been attempting to build bridges with her Palestinian neighbors for over fifty years. But as a terror-free Palestinian leadership has never emerged, and Israeli families continue to be torn apart by senseless terrorist murder, no other option currently exists. Until there's a Palestinian partner who forsakes terrorism, Israeli citizens deserve the protection of an imperfect wall.
In reporting on today's attack, did your local paper indicate the direct connections between the perpetrators of the horrific attack and Yassir Arafat's ruling Fatah party? If not, write a letter to the editor, using the talking points above, and stressing the significance of accuracy on this particular issue ¯ which cuts to the heart of the entire conflict. |

End Sleaze or Lose Aid

The World Bank has issued the Palestinian Authority with an ultimatum to put an end to rampant corruption or lose hundreds of millions of pounds of vital foreign aid.
The Bank’s top official in the region, Nigel Roberts, said Yasser Arafat had to stop the handing of large cash payments to his security commanders - used to keep them loyal to Arafat personally - and other financial practices open to corruption.
Otherwise, he said, the Palestinian Authority risked losing the support of the international community.
In an interview with Scotland on Sunday, Roberts said the Palestinians were receiving the largest amount of money per capita in the history of foreign aid but this was still not enough to balance the budget.
He said it was now crunch time for the Palestinian Authority: support the reformers, led by Finance Minister Salam Fayyad, or face financial ruin.

I think it's blatantly obvious that nobody reads this crap anymore, as most of the pro Palestinian mob just posts crazed anti Israeli diatribes, whilst the pro Israeli side is (generally) even worse. Hell, you aren't exactly helping your cause by creating loads of other pointless threads in quick succession, in addition to bumping something as worthless as this.
Every week there are at least three or so new Palestine - Israel threads, but most of them, quite frankly, suck. Instead of doing the old copy paste, why not open (or participate in) a thread that actually involves people typing out and expressing their own opinions, and rationally discussing the issues involved without resorting to the old 'ZIONIST!' or 'ARAB DOG!' type insults, or flooding it with entire article's simply cut from various 'news' sources. |

Bias because you don't agree with the facts that honest reporting brings up or bias because you dont agree with the stand for Israel one takes? Your 17 year old brain obviously doesn't know what hate is if you attribute hate to Honestreporting.com - check the site before you make false accusations.

The fact that you are posting in this thread tells me that people are reading it. the view count also tells me that there are those people who dont have such a deep rooted hate for Israel that they can actually read the articles and make their own judgements afterwards. You slam the material in this thread yet you dont bother to understand what this thread is about - exposing unwarrented prejuduce against Israel. I'm not saying that all critisism of Israel is anti-Israel, I just feel that the articles in this thread make it VERY clear the deep roots of Anti-Israel bias in the worlds most promenant media sources (that in turn get spread even further to smaller media outlets). To you this thread is worthless as you have no connection to Israel whatsoever and can't even begin to fathum what Israelis have to go through on a daily basis because some s want them dead for exsisting. And dont tell me i should take into account the "plight" of the "Palestinians" for its the "Palestinian" leadership that shat on them 30+ years ago. and are continuing to do so right to this day!

I've participated in my fair share of debates over the years here on TA's Political Forum... dont be fooled by the date of registration on this account. I'm sure i have some old "friends" who can attest to my involvement on this board. |
