You're right about prog sets having a more obvious "flow" and progression of music. Actually, I listen to prog more than anything because in general it's just better music. BUT....Right now the only way I can stand trance is by listening to sets, and more specifically mixed by Tiesto, and there's a reason for it. For me, most of the time that Tiesto mixes two tracks together there's a logic to the mix that adds to the whole linear narrative of his set. If there's one thing I hate is listening to trance singles because listening to the whole trance formula by itself is pretty boring. Tiesto has always added another dimension to trance that I seriously haven't witnessed by any other trance dj even if they are great in their own way and can beatmatch better, be it Matt Hardwick, Armin, Ferry, PVD, Marco V, Scott Bond or whoever, i've seen them all spin live.

Planisphere - Totem and Darren Tate - Let The Light Shine In "flow" perfectly fine for ME, because there's unbroken continuity from one track to the other. It may be a pretty harsh flow, but it makes perfect musical sense to me because the melodic/harmonic contrast fits right in. More important, this type of intense "harsh" transition does wonders in the dancefloor and gives it a lot of energy, and at the end that's what it's all about.

Since you listen to prog and with that other example from ISOS2 you gave I understand that you're looking for smooth immaculate flow from track to track where you wouldn't notice the track change. As you said that is something quite difficult to achieve in trance because of it's linear melodic nature, but I think the energy intensification from track to track is very well constructed in both Nyana CDs. How does it happen? Thanks to Tiesto's taste in connecting different, but complementing, types of melodies. Take for example Beautiful Things mixed into Destination. Beautiful Things is in a major key, Destination is in it's superdominant minor key: the end result is a brilliant contrast that very few djs have an ear for. Going from I to vi creates an effect of tension and energy that aids in the uplifting nature of the set as a whole. This is nothing new, Tiesto did this in all of the Magiks, ISOS, FP and that in my opinion is why Tiesto's compilations are the best of his genre, the musicality.

If I listen to Ferry Corsten World Tour or Armin's Transparence CD I'll enjoy some of the tracks but in general I find them so boring, they don't add anything special to the music. So I'm obviously looking for something different than you guys, call me crazy if you want.

Oh, and Tiesto always mixes his compilations in live turntables and not in Pro Tools like the vast majority of djs. That's another thing that has always made his compilations stand out and this one's no exception. Maybe it was remastered digitally or something, but you can still tell that it was mixed live.

Finally a quite ambitious discussion!

I'll try a conclusion: Maybe the first cd is made for DJ Pio and all the others who are into intense transitions, genre contrasts and completely different types of melodies and sounds. On the other hand, there's the second cd with its 'linear flow' and smooth transitions known from ISOS2...

I'm sure Tiesto intended to make a compilation that would please a variety of fans - That's what is called NYANA!

I have a question: I don't have the CD but The Gift - Love Angel is on CD1. Is this the Main Mix or The M.I.K.E. mix ?

lol, that says it all. modern art is ? give me a break. that's one of the saddest comments i've ever heard on TA. it's pretty sad because if it weren't for modern art music we wouldn't be here probably, but that's a whole different story and off topic.

Anyways, you call me conceited but can't really counter the facts and the opinions that i elaborated on. Wow, good for you.

Let the light shine in works perfectly fine after Totem, the transition into it is a very refreshing contrast and that's what Tiesto's mixing skills are all about(creating contrasts). He even creates a striking harmonic dissonance in the transition that gives me goosebumps everytime i listen to it.

I agree that he's not the most skilled in beatmatching as I never said he was, but for me there are other (and more important) qualities that make up what mixing skills are all about. I won't get into all the theoretical jargon again because people don't understand and call me conceited, but sorry, i'm a trained classical musician and that's how I think. I can't really help it, and it's not my fault that you don't understand.

You call Obsession (Frank Biazzi mix) and Never (Filterheadz rmx) horrible tracks, but they happen to be two of my favorite tracks in the whole compilation. I can't get enough of them.

I'm not idolizing Tiesto at all, i disliked Summerbreeze and In My Memory and quite a few of his sets both live and mp3 livesets. I just honestly thought that this compilation is a masterpiece from start to finish. Sue me for having an opinion. Trance is music, music is art. Art appreciation is subjective, everyone's entitled to their opinion. I respect yours and really don't care if you like this CD or not. But insulting me doesn't really counter my arguments since you're only saying that you don't agree because you don't know what I'm talking about. Peace.

pray tell me, wise one, what does modern art have to do with trance? i said nothing about modern art music, only the splotches and scrawls ppl are calling art these days. i respect your opinions, but the way you state them makes it sound like youre talking down to us inferior minds, and that, frankly, pisses me off. And, as i said before, i also prefer mixes with a seamless, coherent flow.

i only disagree because i don't know what youre talking about? WRONG. I disagree because it was disgusting to read how much you idolized a mix that wasn't even technically sound, despite being a studio mix and from the worlds supposed number one dj at that. My opinion remains: buy Nyana for the tracks themselves.

If you're talking about "modern" art today then you mean contemporary art because modern art is the encompassing label for 20th Century art already, but let's not get into that unnecessary discussion.
I wasn't talking down on anyone, I was just reviewing the CD and honestly analyzing its merits. I wasn't insulting you or anyone else.

I'm not gonna quote everything again, it was quite long :p

DJ Pio: I think determining the 'flow' of a set or two tracks would definetely be a personal preference kind of thing. I wouldn't call myself a prog head or anything, I do appreciate both trance and prog. but to me, a well programmed set is one that takes you on a progressive journey. Although, it seems when im on the dance floor, it's all about the energy of the set. with Planisphere and Darren Tate, i find the contrast between the styles of music a little too different. the transition was great they matched together well, but it seems like it makes the set as a whole a little unbalanced.
CD2 did have a much better flow IMO. The first five tracks were well programmed...im still kinda iffy about putting Nothing (93 Returning Mix) after You Write The Rules, very different tracks in terms of the basslines. As One into Motorcycle was good, The Roc Project should not have followed Motorcycle tho (I didn't like the song at first but after listening to it a couple times it has grown on me a bit). I personally would have put P.O.S. before Leama.
The thing i like about Hardwick is his set programming. he may not have the creativeness of Tiesto in his Harmonic/Bassline matching but his track selection has a better progression than most trance djs.

Trancegiant: Boundaries of Imagination was a very good compilation. ahh memories :p

Well, I just listened to CD2 for only the second time (haven't had a whole lot of time myself) and it cancels out CD1 for me. Indoor is what I was expecting of Nyana and it delivers totally. Still, some of the mixing is a little too obvious and jarring (like the 2nd track into Beautiful Things).

Outdoor disappointed me for sure....it's all over the map in terms of track placement. Let the Light Shine In feels totally wrong after the Totem track.....maybe it should have been Inca (or Amazon at least) into Let the Light Shine In and then into Nyana for a mid trance peak? Ah well.....it's still good and I love some of the tracks but it's just way too technoish for me and too....subtle might be the right word. I want some BANGING . Too bad Outdoor wasn't "hard" trance like in the style of Magik Six...ie Voyage, Sixty Nine Ways, Viola, etc.

nice one ahh ;]

Which was exactly the point. How many people that like Tiësto actually listen to his livesets? Or even know where to get them?

And, by this, I don't mean TA members but the "regular" listeners. 90% of the stuff on this album is new to them.
