IMO, national team tournaments mean nothing to me these days. I wasn't excited for the WC2002 either.
FORZA CLUB FOOTBALL! |
I still prefer world cup.. champions league is dominated by money. WC is still dominated by talent. |

You said it brother!
I only caught the second half @ the duke of Gloucester, the ambiance seemed to be lacking greatly due a pitiable ManUre display :tongue3
I only realized today how supreme this Real squad is, their striking force is out of this world. Man U has an extremely difficult task @ Old Trafford in 2 weeks because it would be unlikely that Barthez will manage a clean sheet.
How about Figo’s goal?:eyes: :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: |

| Damn, again they substituted Shevchenko. They just won't let him finish a game till the end. The guy can't just recover from a dozen injuries and score a goal in a few minutes. LET HIM PLAY!!!!! |

I totally disagree - I'll give you a concrete example.
Each individual Italian player was going to get a bonus of $50,000 US for advancing to the quarterfinals. Then, for advancing to the semifinals, they get $75,000. And for actually winning the whole damn tournament, they get another $100,000.
That's $225,000 and that's more than TWICE Gennaro Gattuso's annual salary. It might be only 0.8 times what Alex Del Piero earns in a year though.
However, the money is there in the World Cup, no denying it.
And as for the WC being dominated by talent...I don't know what crack you've been smoking but let me say that the goals this year in the Champions' League have definitely been a lot better than the goals scored in the World Cup. For sheer excitement, there have been MANY MORE amazing games in the CL this year than in the World Cup.
Take, for example, Newcastle vs. Feyenoord on matchday 6. Newcastle needed to win to qualify for phase II but ONLY if Juventus beat Dynamo Kiev. However, this is the way the events unfolded: Newcastle went 2-0 up, then Juventus went 1-0 up. All is well for Tyneside. THEN Dynamo score on Juventus, and Newcastle give up TWO goals...
First, Juventus score another on Dynamo to make it 2-1.... and then...
...as the commentator on Uefa.com says... commeth the man, commeth the hour. In the 90th minute, Craig Bellamy scores the winner for Newcastle and sends Dynamo AND Feyenoord packing. Such AMAZING stuff. I'm not a Newcastle fan, and as an impartial fan in this situation, it kept me on the edge of my seat. To think that Newcastle LOST three of their first games and to qualify for Phase II is just unthinkable. No side in the history of the competition has done this before.
You don't see like this in the World Cup because face it - passion isn't there in international football anymore. Look at Christian Vieri. He RARELY plays for Italy anymore - he has a 'phantom injury' (as the Italian press calls it) everytime his team has a game (aside from major tournaments). The Azzurri shirt is one of the most prestigious shirts in the whole of world football and a player should be proud to don it. However, we have one of the world's best striker constantly shunning his national side.
Also to prove that the CL isn't all about money - next year, they've taken the wise step to eliminate Phase II. A lot of money will be gone but a lot more excitement (as if there isn't already enough) will be added to Phase I.
Face it, people, as much as you guys love international football, the passion, IMO, is gone. I honestly believe that allegiances are with the club nowadays.
This isn't a personal flame on anyone... just needed to rant... hehe |
