"What kind of music do you listen to man?"
"Trance."
"Techno?"
"Trance."
"Oh so its like Techno"
"No, its better."
"...Sandstorm is like, my favorite song ever."

Thats about where I end the conversation.

i've noticed that seems to be the truth! it's weird though.

educate people who call all electronic music techno, tell them that techno is just one subgenre of electronic music and so is trance and house etc. etc. and tell them that all these genres are very different from each other, even though they have some similarities. that's what i do. and don't EVER use the word ELECTRONICA
:whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip:

that's even more stupid than techno. stupid american invention to categorize all electronic music under one ing STUPID word! i hate that word more than anything, don't use it if you know anything about electronic music! it's a ing pop term used by ignorant people and it sucks!

So I give up on them and just force them to listen to AvB & PvD nonstop.

heh, i actually sort of got my mother into trance. i burned her a few cds and she loves it. i think maybe it's because she was into a lot of the electronic music from the 80's and electronic music kind of originates from that.

i really think that people not having the mental capacity to take in trance and appreciate it is true. no one gives it a chance (atleast the people in my school don't). you have to have the mental capacity of an ant to enjoy the ty rap thats out today. and i'm not dissing all rap because there are some talented artists (jurassic 5, n.e.r.d, a tribe called quest) but thats only because they rap about things other than ing their ho's, drinking their crystal, and smoking their weed.

I'd have to add that in the end it's got nothing to do with trance in particular...

the average teen in the usa that's into "punk" likes blink 182 and crap like that which isn't even real punk ....

and rap ... well if it's not top 40 they don't know about it either .....

Most teens follow the masses and never get into the music extensively so never get to know it well .... don't expect them to know any better about the way they catalog all EDM as Techno .... as a matter of fact all of you would possibly have the tendency of doing the same concerning other style of musics  ;)

Just drop it .... it's not like you were born listening to trance and knew all the stuff from day one ... well some of you maybe but a big portion of you all I'd be guessing NO :p

Yeah, that's true. 'ELECTRONICA' is a big mislabel created by the American media for sensationalist purposes and it doesn't mean much.

Some people in the classical electronic avant-gardes also take issue with the usage by the dance industry of the term 'electronic music', because there has been electronic music for almost a century already and it existed for decades before it was made for dance. There's no reason why we should take over that encompassing genre title. All trance, techno, house, breaks, dnb etc is electronic music, but not all electronic music is dance music.

The only really accurate term is the one suggested all along by PvD-ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC.

true! electronic dance music covers most of today's electronic music, but not all. there's a lot of electronic music nowadays that's main purpose is not to make you dance, therefore i prefer the term 'electronic music' when talking to people without a clue. but it's all good as long as you don't use the terms 'electronica' and 'techno' to describe electronic music in general.:) the most important thing is that you correct the noobs wrong impressions.

maybe we should stop this conversation before it goes into detailed genre specification.:) :)

what do you want them to call it? hip-hop? what if a person is not into electronic music and doesnt know the difference between all the different genres, what do you want them to say? isn't this forum supposed to be accepting and educate those who don't know as much as some other ppl do? some of u ppl are like the annoying generalization of a record store owner who thinks he is hot because he knows the label, first release, and choice of toilet paper of every dj/producer out there...grow up! educate those who don't know as much as u...the more you criticize those who don't know as much as you, the more everyone will hate what you represent.

As I said before, the only accurate broad term is 'electronic dance music', noobs always will understand what that is. 'Electronica' has a catchy sensationalist feel to it when it really doesn't stand for anything, other than 'electronic' in Spanish and Italian. Some people see the term 'electronica' as being part of that whole media frenzy when raves were hysterically exposed in 20/20 and those type of stupid news shows. But the term should be rejected because it was made up by people who don't know . ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC PvDism is the only word that works broadly. :)

Electronic music works too, as long as you're aware that not all electronic music is dance music. That's why I use EDM when talking about trance, house, techno, dnb etc.
