Grizzly Bear.
ever seen what happens to a car when people leave food in it and a bear finds it. the bear rips the car apart, usually taking the doors off. and one swipe from a bear will remove a persons head i think so that wouldnt feel to good for a gorilla. given, silverbacks are big and nasty, but if the bear got anywhere near him(which is inevitable in a fight) he would swat him like a fly, then rip him to shreds. Bear all the way

Ursus arctos horribilis(Grizzly Bear)->"horrible Northern bear"
| quote: | | Bears possess enormous strength, regardless of species or size. The strength of a bear is difficult to measure, but observations of bears moving rocks, carrying animal carcasses, removing large logs from the side of a cabin, and digging cavernous holes are all indicative of enormous power. No animal of equal size is as powerful. A bear may kill a moose, elk, or deer by a single blow to the neck with a powerful foreleg, then lift the carcass in its mouth and carry it for great distances. |

What you want to be really scared of is mountian lions. If you see the animal your probably okay, it's when you cant see them that your ed. |

There is a great website that explores interspecies "what if" scenarios.

Lets face it : Bears can weigh well over 1000 pounds and have claws up to 6 inches long. Bears have extremely strong forepaws due to the amount of digging they do, as well as an extremely hard skull. Cap that with speed that is almost unthinkable for an animal so clumsy looking (40mph). The gorilla wouldnt stand a chance. |

i dont know man, "human tools" such as m16s would quiet the beast a bit.
as to the match up...
grizzly in an enclosed space...unless the gorilla gets on the bear's back. the grizzly would have a hard time romving a 800 pound gorilla from its back IMO.
in open terrain (especially jungle) I would think the gorilla would book it and wait until the bear slept or something to that end. maybe drop a boulder on it. |

The Californians of the late 19th century staged well-documented pit fights with grizzlies and spanish bulls. The grizzlies, using their paw as a club, shattered the unfortunate bull's skull or shoulder bones so easily that the betting became poor.
Eventually, and at considerable cost, African lions were brought in to raise the stakes. The most fierce of the adult males was sent in whilst the grizzly was already waiting in the pits. The lion was known for bravely charging straight in and looked good for the money, but the grizzly killed a male lion almost as easily as he'd killed the bull.
er, I'm going with the grizzly |

In real life humans have faced both Bulls and Bears armed only with bladed weapons and come out alive... Mas Oyama apparently faced a bull unarmed, shattering its horns with his bare arms (apparently there is actual footage of this in existance, although it was later claimed by some that the bull was old and weak). Not sure if anyone has ever tried to face a silverback... |

I understand your point, but regardless of the gorilla's intelligence and tactics, all it's going to take is one moment for the bear to get a good shot on the gorilla and it's all over. That's why I'd put my money on the bear |
