First pot overdose ever

man of 36 is believed to have become the first person in Britain to die directly from cannabis poisoning.

Lee Maisey smoked six cannabis cigarettes a day for 11 years, an inquest heard. His death, which was registered as having been caused by cannabis toxicity, led to new warnings about the drug, which is due to be reclassified this month as a less dangerous one.

"This type of death is extremely rare," Prof John Henry, a toxicologist at Imperial College, London, said after the inquest at Haverfordwest, west Wales.

"I have not seen anything like this before. It corrects the argument that cannabis cannot kill anybody."

The inquest heard that Mr Maisey had complained of a headache on Aug 22 last year. Next morning he was found dead at the house he shared with a friend, Jeffrey Saunders, in Summerhill, Pembrokeshire.

Michael Howells, the Pembrokeshire coroner, said Mr Maisey was free from disease and had not drunk alcohol for at least 48 hours. Post-mortem tests showed a high level of cannabinoids in his blood.

He recorded a verdict of death by misadventure because Mr Maisey had died while taking part in an illegal activity. The death led to a warning about the changing strength of cannabis, which is to be reduced to a Class C drug on Jan 29.

Dr Philip Guy, a lecturer in addictions at the University of Hull, said: "Cannabis is not the nice hippy drug it used to be. It has been experimented with to produce stronger varieties."

Dr Guy said that death was more likely if users ate the drug rather than smoked it. "I would not be surprised if in this case the deceased had ingested a fatal amount of cannabis."

To get cannabis poisoning you need to smoke at least 20.000 joints in 24 hours, instead of 10 years (what he did)

I think it's just the tobacco that killed him... :p

so if i smoke only 3 a day, im going to die in 22 years? :nervous:

As much as I hate pot, I think a death rate of 1 out of a billion or so is marginally acceptable.

eeek!!!

I smoked 15-25 a day for 4-5 yrs (and a fair few more every weekend)

thats like taking 20 a day as my average and 4.5 yrs as the time scale i'm looking at 32,850 joints :O:O and this guy was on 24,090 joints

should i be dead?? suppose it depends on if his were pure or resin or with baccy etc

still he musta bin rolling phat ones

Uhm. I find this hard to believe. Unlike opiates, barbituates or amphetamines, marijuana's toxicity remains null as the levels in your blood stream rise. If you smoked a quarter to yourself in an hour, you have a good chance of passing out with some very sore lungs. :p
How can THC be hailed as a true medicinal wonder and yet it can kill us if we smoke less than I do a day for 11 years?

There's no credibility here, the article doesn't even say how exactly he died. Lung Cancer?

its bs

Hm...I recall hearing that 4 times the amount of alcohol that it takes for you to get drunk will kill you...and it's 4,000 times the amount of pot you have to smoke to get high that would kill you.

Yeah...pot could maybe kill you if you smoke an ounce a day for 10 years or something but I can't see many people doing that...let alone even have the money for it.

Pot can be potentially bad for you if you're not wise about using it...but as for killing you, I find that hard to believe.

I hear there's this new drug called "H2O" that can kill you if you consume enough of it. What's worse is that it's undetectable in urine or blood tests.

I know someone who's passed out on pot. He posts on here too. A one Mr Dukes. Nearly killed him too, or at least nearly took out an eye as he fell towards the edge of a table in a technical drawing class in high school :)

Why does the story have to be bs? If water or even sugar can kill you in enough quantitites I don't understand why it's so hard to grasp the concept that pot can kill you in extreme circumstances. There have been many published cases of cannabis poisoning and until now apparentely nobody has died. So the guy suffered a bout of cannabis poisoning and his body couldn't take it anymore ... who cares? The death rate is still negligeble compared to nearly anything else on the face of the planet, but why deny it can happen?

I mean really, I'm all for the legalization of most drugs, and especially pot, but many of its supporters make it out to be the safest drug/element since the dawn of man.
