And that is exactly the type of sh*t that is F*cking up the vibe at these parties. It would seem that there are too many guys there just for the sake of going rather than those there for PVD. Years ago, I Oz Fest and Prodigy in the same month. I normally would not have gone but because I had a few friends that really wanted to go, I did.
What I found interesting was that I recognized some of the people from Oz Fest @ the Prodigy concert. The crowd didn't know what to do. I saw a look of dissapointment on Liam's face as the crowd didn't really care if they played or not. The crowd just wanted a place to get stoned and slam dance. It was almost like they were trying too hard to have a good time. WTF is wrong with this picture? |

There's nothing wrong with that. But when someone is overtly agressive in a crowd and pushes people arround, that's not right. When I was in the service, I was in the best shape of my life. But I never remember pushing people around because I could.
But in NY, I can see why it happens. |

lelandmulder: Thanks for your support! As I said before, I go for the total "club experience" - and for me the true club experience has always included women! Sausage-fests are not a recipie for fun in my book.
And to answer wallflower, my attendance to trance events has declined (but not ceased) steadily over the last two years, for two reasons:
1) I started producing - can't go out and party every weekend when I have have to stay inside and learn technique
2) During this same time period, I had attended a number of weekly attempts, some thrown by close friends of mine, all of which failed miserably
While I admit I haven't been to any of the monthlies thrown by the TAers, I must say that seeing so many failed trance parties took somewhat of a toll on me (I remember one particularly bad night at Vudu, when the crowd ran off the floor like cockaroaches exposed to light whenever any sort of EDM came on).
I'm not judging the whole scene based on one night (PVD@Roxy) as there are certainly folk who keep the scene alive outside of big events. However, when you see the crowd at such a high profile trance gathering, I believe its more or less indicative to "general health" of the scene.
I don't have beef with any DJ or even members of the NYC trance commnuity who for some odd reason, believe that women are an inconsequential or irrelevant aspect of an EDM event ("I go only for the music" = NOT my point of view, I go for the whole deal).
Basically, I remember a day when trance yielded some killer times with killer people - nowadays, I can't get that vibe back, not even at PVD. So hence my vocalizations on improving the scene. I honestly believe trance is some of the best music our world has to offer right now. Being a New Yorker, its my opinion that this music should be properly represented in our town, which is, hands down, one of the best cities in the world.
Anyways, I'm glad to see more posters come out of the woodwork - and Miss Bliss, once again, kudos. I wasn't expecting to run into any Megadeth fans on this board!

Despite my reservations about the amount of girls, I'd have to say Roxy delivers on the music side. PVD does his thing there of course, but I usually have an especially good time when Armin comes to town (I believe it was last summer, he was rockin the floor with some deep/prog house-ish type of beats sped up way over their original tempo - different and cool).
Marco V at Arc was great - good atmosphere and excitement in the female challenged crowd, except for some crackface wandering around in front, wielding a lighter like he was at a rock concert ;)
Armin@arc was also excellent. Just the overall vibe at his events pack a lot of energy.
As for the weekly parties, I don't have much in terms of specifics. Most of that happened over a year ago, when we would follow a lead, pile in a car, and check it out. The lack of reception I saw combined with my continued involvement with production dictated that I didn't have as much time for them anymore (hence me only catching the bigger events as time went on).
I was supposed to hit up one of Victor Dinaire's gatherings recently (which I hear are always rockin'), but unfortunately, I couldn't make it.
As for best trance events EVER? Not an easy question. . .recently, I'd have to say Summerstage with PVD was awesome, if not for his set (which some people didn't like) but for the overall event. Great crowd, great venue, great times.
Best parties of all time? This is going back, but I'd have to say the Caffeine parties at the Vanderbilt are at the top of my personal list. The combination of the music, crowd, and venue (which was absolutely amazing) set a standard which I still have yet to see beat.
Lastly, you could throw in some Space dates from the last WMC too (PVD, Mauro Picotto, Tiesto) - all crowded, but each DJ raised the roof. I had a lot of fun at those events, they made the whole trip for me. The WMC before that, I'd have to say the Perfecto showcase at Liquid was the best; D:Fuse and Oakey rocked the house (and I had the added bonus of sneaking into VIP - good memories).
So there you have it, wallflower. Have I provided a list sufficient enough to justify some of the comparisons I've been making, or am I going to get a bright light shined in my face next? :toothless
Events like the ones I have mentioned above illustrate some of what I would like to return to NYC - I wonder how many people here share that desire, because there are certainly a number of folk who want NYC trance to stay "as is". Its an interesting issue, but to each his own, I suppose.

I don't live in the city and I'm there only on "rare" occasions. I never really thought there was a lack of females but to be honest I don't pay attention to the attendance... All I know is that roxy is famous for the huge lines at the girls's bathroom when there's headliners :p .... Maybe that's where they all are! :stongue: |

Ok... There were a lot of guys at PvD. I think this had a lot to do with the fact that management wasn't letting in people without tickets until after 2. Why? Well, who would buy tickets for a PvD show? Fans, trance fans, PvD fans, whatever... The fact of the matter is that men are bigger fans of this music than women are.
So we get a club full of guys and yes, it sucks. It's not as bad when they let people in without tickets though. You get the regular Roxy crowd which is a little less male-heavy. Then again, they generally don't know much about the music so I wouldn't consider them part of the trance scene here.
So your real problem isn't that there aren't enough women at trance events but that there aren't enough women into trance in general.... at least not as many women as there are men... It's sad, yes, and it makes for a sausage fest at a fans only trance party. I don't really see what we can do to change it though. Trance is a very male genre of music. :(
Then again, some dj's just attract a lot more girls too. Tiesto, Armin, Gabriel and Dresden... those all should and have been good for girls in the past. |

i don't live in ny, but I've been there twice in the past two summers and the music genres of nyc are alot more generalized then the rest of the us. obviously the majority of people prefer hip-hop over any genre in ny, it's a given and it's a girl's 'choice' of music to dance to.
anyway, what I'm trying to say is that nyc might have a hard-time bringing up that guy:girl ratio up in clubs.. Out here in the west, we have alot of asians who are trance-heads which make up alot of girls that we get at raves, and our girl:guy ratios are getting pretty good now, about 60:40, at bigger events it's even. so i guess it also might just be a stereotypical racial difference as well when it comes to trying to populate trance clubs. |

well you know suckers, if you really were so serious about music as you purport to be, you would be listening to psychedelic trance like X-Dream and Dark Soho and not the cheezy garbage you all rave about.
so when you're thinking "oh this meathead doesn't understand trance" thats the exact opposite of the truth - cuz it is YOU who don't understand REAL trance.
