Federal Election: June 28 2004

I just heard on Newsworld that a June 28 2004 election call is expected late this week.

A few important things to note:

1) If you're going to Europe this summer and won't be here on June 28 - you can still vote. You can do advanced polling or even proxy voting. Make sure you register to do so.

2) Canada is facing a crisis in voter turn out. It appears that people under 30 don't care about politics (based on poll turn out). PLEASE get out there and vote. It is VERY important that we all take this responsibility seriously.

3) I don't care who you vote for - but don't vote for a party just because you think they're going to win. It is important that parties and the public know where voters cast their support (even if the party one votes for doesn't win). It is important to have accurate voter representation not only in Ottawa but also in party support (# of votes for a party nationwide). Vote for a party because you AGREE and SUPPORT their agenda - tactical voting is a myth.

4) See #2.

#3 is very important... I will vote for a party that I know won't win... but, it doesn't matter, emergence of smaller parties is more vital for democracies.

If I were prime minister id pass a law very similar to australia and many countries in Europe. Mandatory voting punishable by fine. You dont have to vote for anybody per se. You just have to show up in person to decline your vote instead of just sitting on your lazy ass and doing nothing.

If this happened, politicians would have to actually listen to what ALL people are saying and people would get more involved and more informed. Right now the only people who get noticed by politicians are special interests and the grannies who are the only people who seem to actually vote.

p.s your vote means nothing, what will one vote do?

I am under 30, and I love politics. I'm half assed educated on the process (having my poli sci degree), and I can tell you now, your vote means dick, and that's why I'm not voting.

uhhhh one question.. how democractic is mandatory voting? The whole point of a democracy is choice. Some people can choose to NOT vote (even though I dont' agree with that). Our parliamentary system is already very undemocractic why make it more so?

if you don't vote, will it make a difference?

someone please answer me.
