| All great points being made here including Kid's. Although, ofcourse I disagree with a lot of them, it's important that we keep in mind that these consoles were made ultimately to play games right? Hope so. Playstation has always been about games, so has Nintendo's consoles. The blu-ray player on the PS3 is just an add-on honestly.(no, that isn't an insult) Me personally, I judge a system by the games, not if it plays movies or emulates old games, or if it can do slideshows. I'm a gamer at heart, not really a super tech head(though I know enough of all of that). That's the reason I dumped the PSP. I got it because I thought the games were going to be great. I foresaw myself on my lunch break playing that nonstop. Screen was nice. But then the games turned to and I didnt' want it anymore. Look at the DS's library. It's insane! I go to sleep playing that . A good point was made that not a lot of people are into the modding thingy. Just pick up a game and play it. I'll tell you one thing, the 360 is looking mighty pretty. I'm definitely getting one next year for GOW and Halo 3(which I'll own anyone at Halo2 on here btw. Let me know :D ) It has a number of great games already. I'll play a waiting game with the PS3 for now. I haven't seen quality yet. I'm super happy with the Wii though, I've already got Madden, Zelda, CoD. And Wii Sports is a hoot to play. Stop the piracy!!!:p |

i must disagree with kid nyce in being the ps3 is only a gaming console since sony and pretty much everyone has stated its supposed to be more.
well the more part is in standby as not anyone can do the more part (hdtv + blu ray dvds)
the justified price of it being 499 or 599 is because it is a blu ray dvd player and a multimedia center, its like the gaming is extra..
but the bad part is that there are more HD DVDs then there are blu ray dvds right now.. hollywood is liking the HD DVD more because it can be produced cheaper and there are no shortages on blu ray dvd players..
fact is that sony is not able to back up their own product due to lack of manufacturing and so far its losing the HD vs BR dvd war...
which imo whoever creates these types of standards should have voted on one and stick with it, to make the public choose is dumb on something like this because if one fails in the end, then it costs the consumer more to purchase the other type of player and movies on that one...
course they did say that a hd AND blu ray dvd player is possible on one machine, i dont see it happening for quite a bit until they see sony can backup the blu ray for quite a bit. |

good points k1ba!
However, it's an extra $200 to the 360 to play those 'hd-dvds' which conveniently puts the 360 at the same pricepoint as a PS3. |

the 360 wasnt sold as a multimedia center like the ps3 is trying to be.
for an hd dvd player to be $200 its cheaper then anything thats out now if you own 360 that is.
toshiba hd dvd player alone is $499 - http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...d=1158323325814
sony blu ray is $999 (HAHAHAHAHHA)

I've always wondered why the hell the companies decided to go seperate ways and create this format war that will inevitably lead only to confused customers and pissed off geeks who spent all their money on a technology that ended up getting its ass beat in the end. For the love of god, just pick one please.
From what I know, blu-ray is better than HD-DVD. However HD-DVD costs less to produce. If everyone had chosen blu-ray, a technology that is BETTER by FACT, production costs would have dropped rapidly. Why the hell are companies choosing to support a format that is ALREADY inferior to another one? What the hell? Am I missing something here? I dont get it.
The interesting thing to note here is that the PS3 forces people to buy into the blu-ray craze. If you dont have an HDTV however, you wont be able to enjoy its perks, but rather it will seem practically identical to a standard DVD. The 360 however gives you a CHOICE. If you dont want HD, you dont have to get HD. That being said, theres no denying that Sony is REALLY hooking it up for the consumer by throwing all of these features under the same hood for such a good price. 600 might seem a lot to 10 year video game nerd Jimmy, but to his dad, whom owns an HDTV but is yet to own any multimedia equipment, the PS3 is ideal and almost essential.

But isnt the definition of fanboy someone who blindly follows a company and blindly hates all of its competitors? :p You are no fanboy if thats the case.
But seriously, a lot of people are viewing Sony as the Wal-Mart of video games. I dont see it that way. Sony IS the reason video games are where they are at. They launched video gaming into the mainstream and turned the entire industry into a multi-billion dollar revenue machine. The NES definetly had its impact, but back then people viewed games as being for kids. Now, thanks to Playstation, games are for just about everyone. |

sony would still cost more than HD.
the reason why HD costs less is because they only had to modify the plants with a low price.
for blu-ray they had to create a new manufacturing process completely which is why it costs more. |

Well, I shouldnt say Sony IS the reason, because that does make it seem like they were the only ones shaping the industry, which of course is not true. Sega, Nintendo, and Microsoft all did their part.
But saying Sony isnt any more important than their competitors in the transformation of the industry is just silly. They are the pioneers of mainstream gaming. Just look at console sales.
NES = 60 million
SNES = 49.1 million
Genesis = 30.75 million
N64 = 32.93 million
PSone =102.49 million
Saturn = 9.26 million
Xbox = 24 million
Gamecube = 21.20 million
PS2 = 111.25 million
And a big reason the NES sold as well as it did was because it really had no competition. It wasnt until the late 80's that Sega finally unleashed the Master System...but by then the NES had already established its position as THE video game system to own.
The PSone accomplished what it did through direct competition with Nintendo, a company that at the time was the reigning champ of the video game industry. So not only did Sony fight an uphill battle, but they won said battle by a frickin landslide.
The PS2 accomplished what it did through direct competition with 2 consoles that were vastly superior in their specs, and 1 of them was even cheaper! |
