Manitoba First Nations donated thousands of dollars to Liberal party

WINNIPEG - The Liberal party accepted political donations of thousands of dollars from impoverished native bands in Manitoba – federal tax money that critics say could have been put to better use delivering services on reserves.

Elections Canada's contributions database shows that between 2000 and 2002 the federal Liberals received several thousand dollars from some Manitoba First Nations bands, according to a CBC analysis.

The Manitoba band that contributed the most to Liberal coffers was the Norway House Cree Nation, which gave more than $10,000.
The chief of the Norway House band, Ron Evans, ran for the Liberals in 2000 and is running for the party this time around in the Churchill riding. The president of the Churchill Liberal Riding Association is also a Norway House band administrator.
Norway House band councillor Marcel Balfour criticized the donations as an inappropriate use of the money.
"[With] the situation Norway House is in right now – with our high unemployment and lack of housing, and problems with youth violence – I think the $10,000 could have gone somewhere else other than [to] the Liberal party," he said.
"I wasn't aware there was $10,000 going to the Liberal party from band funds," Balfour added.
But Evans said there was nothing wrong with making the donations. He explained that most of them came in the form of buying seats at Liberal fundraisers.

Evans argues the money got the band access to cabinet ministers, and ultimately made things better for the people of Norway House.
Norway House wasn't the only First Nation to donate money to the Liberals during 2000-2002.
Elections Canada said Peguis First Nation gave the Liberals about $3,000, while Berens River First Nation donated about $5,000.
Ottawa gives money to First Nations for services such as policing and housing on reserves. There were no restrictions on donations at the time they were made.
There is no data available for donations since 2002, but as of this year, native bands can no longer make political donations.

dont take this as a defence of the liberals at all.
They arent BURNING a flag, they are blurring the canadian icon as they say Harper will.
I do believe them, that the conservatives will ruin this great country of ours, but its not a reason to vote for the liberals. It means look at better options. all the parties minus the conservatives should thank the liberals for paying for this ad.
The mis truths about liberals BURNING a flag are just as bad as anything they have done in the past years.
Policy wise, I cant disagree with anything liberal, but Im too upset with them over mis use of funds that I wont vote for them. But the conservatives are NOT a good viable option to keep canada even close to what we know it as. |

...after all the damage the Fiberals have done to this country, in health care, international irrelevance, corruption and waste...
